There was no winner of last week-ends lotto jackpot worth 7300 euros. The numbers drawn were 2 13 17 25. Five people matched three numbers Joe Heagney, Austin Gohery, Damien Quigley, Peter Foley and Olivia Muldoon. They each receive 20 euros.

Junior A
Our junior A hurlers have reached the semi final stages of the county championship after seeing off Pearses at the week-end on a scoreline 3-12 to 1-8. After producing some very impressive displays in the group games they needed to submit a similiar gritty display if they were to account for their opponents and that they did. Boosted by the return of John O Flaherty and Joe Keane the junior A team laid the foundation for victory with a fantastic first half display to give them a seven point lead at the interval. Pearses had no answer to Dave Canning who was on top form accounting for 1-4 of Portumna 's scores in the first half with the other scores coming from Ciaran Ryan 1-1 and Steve Killeen 0-1.

Playing against a stiff breeze in the second half Portumna needed a good start and when Paddy Dolphin was brought to ground on the edge of the square after a high tackle Dave Canning duly delivered when he buried the ball to the net. Ronan Hayes who replaced Paddy after this incident scored two points while Dave added another 0-4 to his tally. Conor Muldoon had a quiet evening in goals and he was ably assisted by a strong full backline of Reamann McEntee John O Flaherty and Johnny Keane. Tomas Quinn was rock solid at centre back and he received good cover from his other half backs Conor Broderick and Ian Flaherty. Ivan Muldoon and Shane O'Rourke won the battle in the middle of the park while the half forward line of Eamonn Lynch and Joe Keane battled well with Ciaran Ryan putting in a fine performance. Dave Canning was easily the best forward on view with Paddy Dolphin and Steve Killeen the other two inside forwards.

Well done to our senior hurlers on winning the 2009 league final. The game took place in Athenry last Sunday evening opponents Castlegar. Both teams gave it their all in the first half in what was a very entertaining game of hurling. Joe Canning was the first Portumna player to get his name on the scoreboard. Points from Ger Kelly, Andy Smith, Peter Smith, Niall Hayes and Joe Canning gave Castlegar a one point lead at the interval on a scoreline 1-8 to 2-6. Portumnas goal scorer Niall Hayes. All was to play for in the second half and Ciaran Ryan replaced Ronan Royston at the start of the second half. Both teams gave it their all Castlegar added three points to their first half tally. Ronan Hayes came on for Ger Kelly Portumna added 11 points to their first half tally with nine points coming from Joe Canning with Niall Hayes and Andy Smith the other Portumna scorers. The cup was presented to Leo Smith by Joe Byrne the chairman of the Galway Hurling Board.

Junior A
The junior A team have a couple of challange games lined up this week-end against Sixmilebridge and Mullagh in preparation for their forthcoming quarter final which is down for decision next week-end.

U-16
Well done to the under 16 team and management on reaching the quarter final stages of the competition. They played two games this week the first against Mullagh. Portumna went in at half time on a scoreline 3-9 to 0-3 with Portumna's scores coming from Ronan O Meara 3-2 Jamie Flanagan 0-5 Sean Tuohy 0-1 and Owen Treacy 0-1. Mullagh needed a good start in the second half but it was Portumna who started well with a goal from Ronan O Meara another goal from Ronan and two goals from Jamie Flanagan ended the game as a contest with Portumna's points coming from Padraig Corcoran, Niall Concannon, Sean Tuohy, Raymond Broderick and James Coughlan. Mullagh added four points to their first half score. Final score Portumna 7-14 Mullagh 0-7.

Their second game against St Thomas took place in Castledaly on Thursday evening. Thomas was the first to score but it was not long before Portumna levelled with a point from Ronan O Meara. The first half was evenly contested with both teams giving it their all Portumna went in at the interval a point down on a scoreline 1-5 to Thomas 0-9 with Portumna's scores coming from Jamie Flanagan 1-1 and Ronan O Meara 0-4. It was unfortunate that Portumna lost Sean Tuohy so early in the game through injury Conor Barry came on as his replacement and had an outstanding game at centre field. The second half was all to play for. Thomas settled better and went three points ahead but Portumna remained calm under pressure and when Jamie Flanagan scored a goal all was to play for. Points from Conor Barry 0-4 Ronan O Meara 0-5 Padraig Corcoran 0-2 Owen Treacy 0-1 Jamie Flanagan 0-2 gave Portumna a worthy victory even though Portumna had a bit to spare at the end the score did not reflect the game - a great game of hurling was provided by both teams and their was some great individual performances on both sides. Colin Burke was solid in goals and was ably assisted by Simon Curran, Padraig Muldoon and Tommy Heagney in the full back line. Owen Treacy had a great game at centre back in particular in the second half when Portumna was under pressure and he was well assisted by his other two half backs of James Coughlan and especially Niall Royston who put in a brillant performance. Conor Barry and Niall Concannon won most of the midfield exchanges. Ronan O Meara having been moved out to centre forward stopped the Thomas threat of moving forward and picked off some great points his other two half forwards of Padraig Corcoran and Eddie Moloney gave it their all. Jamie Flanagan excelled when moved into full forward and he got great help from Darren Dillon and Jamie Conboy. Well done to both teams for a great game of hurling.

Owen Treacy wins Puc Fada in Cooley Mountains

Owen Treacy - Puc Fada
Owen Treacy and Bernard Dunne

Owen Treacy won the the All Ireland Puc Fada last week in Cooley Mountains. To qualify he had to first win Galway and then Connacht. It took Owen 26 pucks to complete the course. Basically you follow a course of marked yellow rocks up the mountain - trying to avoiding water, bog, rocks, heathers and a ravine in order to get the best footing (sometimes not possible) for stricking the next ball. The least amount of pucks the better. 2nd place was Sean Barry from Lismore, Waterford who took 28 pucks. James Skehill of Cappatagle came 3rd in the seniors.

Well done to our senior team for reaching the quarter final stages of the competition. They were just too srong for Killimordaly in Ballinasloe on Saturday evening. Joe Canning was the first Portumna player to get on the scoreboard with a point from a free and points from Andy Smith 0-4 Chunky Hayes 0-2 Niall Hayes 0-2 Damien Hayes 0-2 and two further points from Joe Canning and a goal from Damien Hayes brought the half time score to 1-13 to 0-3 with two of Killimordaly points coming from frees. The second half was no better for Killimordaly with points coming from Joe Canning Damien Hayes Niall Hayes Andy Smith and Eoin Lynch with Joe Canning adding two goals to his tally. Killimordaly added eight points to their first half tally Portumna 3-21 Killimordaly 0-11.

Junior A
Well done to the Junior A who have now qualified to the quarter final of the competion after a narrow win against Liam Mellows last week-end. The first Portumna player to score was Shane O Rourke while points from Steve Killeen Ronan Hayes 0-3 Tomas Quinn Ivan Muldoon and Dave Canning 0-4 gave Portumna a half time lead of five points of 1-11 to Liam Mellows 2-3. Portumna's goal coming from Dave Canning. Points from Dave Canning Ian Flaherty and Ronan Hayes gave Portumna that bit of leeway but Liam Mellows battled well and they added seven points to their first half tally. With only minutes remaining Mellows were awarded a penalty after one of their players were taken down the free taker had only goal on his mind when he stood over the free somehow it was saved and cleared and with that the referee blew the final whistle Portumna topped the group having won all their games. Portumna 1-16 Liam Mellows 2-10.

U-16
On the juvenile front the under 16 team began their championship win a win over Carnmore. Ronan O Meara was the first Portumna player to get on the scoreboard and added three more points before Carnmore replied. A further six points from Ronan and points from Jamie Flanagan, Owen Treacy and Conor Barry meant Portumna went in at the interval on a scoreline 1-13 to Carnmore 2-2 with Portumna's goal coming from Owen Treacy from a penalty after Ronan O Meara was taken down on the edge of the square. If Carnmore was to get anything out of the game they needed a good start to the second half but it was Ronan O Meara within minutes of the start took on the Carnmore defence and buried the ball past the Carnmore goalie. Game over at this stage further points from O Meara, Owen Treacy and Sean Tuohy gave Portumna a ten point win on a scoreline 2-17 to 3-4.

The under 16 team had another game during the week their opponents Killimordaly. Niall Concannon was the first Portumna scorer with a points from Ronan O Meara 0-8 Jamie Flanagan 0-2 and a great point from Owen Treacy from distance meant Portumna went in at the interval nine points ahead on a scoreline 1-12 to 1-3 with Portumna's goal coming from Jamie Conboy. Portumna went further ahead with points from Ronan O Meara 0-4 Padraig Corcoran and a goal from Daniel Gerathy gave them a comfortable lead. Killimordaly added four more points to their first half tally but then disaster struck three goals in the space of five minutes brought back the lead to six points in fairness to Killimordaly they battled well and continued to pile on the pressure but Portumna did not panic and two goals from Ronan O Meara gave Portumna another ten point victory on a scoreline 4-17 to 4-7.

Congratulations
Best of luck to Shane O Rourke and Teresa Murray on their wedding day next Friday. Hope ye have a lovely day.

The junior A team continued their unbeaten run in the championship with a win over Gort last Wednesday evening. Dave Canning was the first Portumna player to get on the scoreboard with a point from a free Dave added two more points from frees and a point from play. A point from Steve Killeen and a goal from Dave Canning meant Portumna went in at the interval four points down on a scoreline 1-5 to 2-6. With all to play for in the second half Portumna began to pile on the pressure Ciaran Ryan added a point Dave Canning 0-6 from frees and a point from play brought Portumna into the game. Eaman Lynch struck a long ball into the full forward line the Gort goalie failed to deal with it and the ball ended up in the Gort net. Game on Gort added 1-2 to their first half total and when Ronan Hayes scored Portumnas third goal time was up and Portumna ran out worthy winners on a scoreline 3-13 to 3-8.

Their final group game is against Liam Mellows in Loughrea on Saturday at 5:30pm and a win will ensure them a quarter final placing.

Junior B
Portumna Junior B team play Ahascragh/Fohenagh in Killimor on Sunday evening at 7pm in the last round up of the group games.

Minor
Our minor team secured two points in the championship after a win over Micheal Breathnach on Friday evening. A win was badly needed after suffering defeats in their last two games. Portumna went in at half time on a scoreline 2-11 to 0-2 with the scores coming from Ronan O Meara 0-4 Oisin Royston 0-3 Sean Tuohy 0-2 Johnathan Cormican 0-1 Craig O Meara 0-1 with the goals coming from Jamie Flanagan and Padraig Muldoon. Portumna piled on the pressure in the second half and added 0-9 to their first half tally with scores coming from Ronan O Meara 0-5 Niall Concannon 0-2 Sean Tuohy 0-1 and Oisin Royston 0-1 while Micheal Breathnachs just added two points to their first half tally.

However this win was short lived when our minors suffered a very heavy defeat at the hands of Rahoon - Newcastle on Sunday. The portumna scorers were Colin Burke 0-5 from frees, Padraig Muldoon 0-1, Jamie Flanagan 0-1 and Ronan O Meara 1-1.

U-16

Junior A
The junior A team play Gort in the next round of the championship on Wednesday evening in Kilbeacanty at 7:30 They have maximum points after two games and a win in this game would certainly guarantee them a quarter final placing with one game remaining against Liam Mellows.

Junior B
Our junior B team suffered another defeat in their championship against Kinvara in Kilbeacanty last Sunday evening. This was a game which Portumna badly needed to win to remain in the competition after already suffering defeats to Bearna na Forbacha and Castlegar. Tristan Hoary was the first Portumna person to score from a free with Vinnie Sellars adding four points three from frees and a good score from a 65. Shane Connors was one of the goal scorers with Damien Coleman scoring Portumnas second goal from a twenty one yard free. Damien came up all the way from goals to drive the ball to the roof of the Kinvara net. There was only a point in the difference at half time on a scoreline Portumna 2-5 Kinvara 2-6. All was to play for in the second half however Kinvara were the team who settled better in the second half and added 1-6 to their first half tally while Portumna only added three points Vinnie Sellars 0-2 from frees Johnathan Fahy 0-1 Johnathan point was the only point which came from play and the sending off of two Portumna players just showed what a fraustrating day they were having and this certainly did not help their cause. Their next game is against Ahascragh - Fohenagh on the week-end 18th July.

Minor
The minors resumed their championship campaign after a long break due to exams last Friday evening against Oranmore-Maree in Craughwell. Portumna got off to a good start and were five points ahead going in at the interval with the scores coming from Owen Treacy 0-3 Jamie Conboy 1-0 and Ronan O Meara 0-6 who was causing quite a few problems for the Oranmore defence. The score at half time Portumna 1-9 Oranmore 0-7 with all to play for in the second half. Oranmore battled well in the second half and scoring point after point gradually reduced Portumna lead but once again Owen Treacy and Ronan O Merara showed leadership and between them added 1-5 to their first half tally with Owen scoring one point and Ronan 1-4. Oranmore had 1-10 added to their first half tally with only minutes remaining then came the killer blow Oranmore got a goal after a major skermish at the goalmouth it was hard on the lads after dominating all through the game to be beaten by the last puck of the ball but thats sport. It has to be said it was a great game of hurling and their was some fine individual on both sides with Brian Mannion and Johnathan Cormican showing good leadership in defence and were well assisted by Simon Curran Graham Fogarty Eoin Harte and Michael Ward. Owen Treacy gave a good performance at centre field and got good assistance from Jamie Blake. Colin Burke had a great game at centre forward and supplied good ball inside to the full forward line he was abbly assisted by Padraig Mulddon and Oisin Royston. Ronan O Meara at full forward proved quite a handful for the Oranmore full back line with Jamie Conboy and Jamie Flanagan the two corner forwards. Final score Portumna 2-14 Oranmore 2-17. Portumna now play Cois Fharraige on Friday at 7:30 in Ballindereen in the next round of the minor championship.

Junior B
Our junior B team suffered another defeat in the championship at the week-end this time at the hands of Castlegar. Having beaten Castlegar all ready in the league the confidence was high going into the game but this was not to be the case as Castlegar ran out worthy winners and had eight points to spare in the finish. Alan Gorman was the first Portumna player to get his name on the scoreboard but two goals by Castlegar in about five minutes was a killer blow. But in fairness to Portumna they did not panic and four points from Brian Dolphin with Portumna's first half goals coming from Stephen Treacy(2-0) and Declan Madden (1-0) meant they went in at the interval two points down on a scoreline 3-5 to 2-10. All was to play for in the second half but unfortunately Portumna were only able to add another four points to their tally with the goal coming from a well taken free by Damien Coleman and a point from Stephen Treacy while Castlegar added 1-7 to their first half tally bringing the scores at the end of the game to Portumna 4-6 Castlegar 3-17. Portumna now need to win their two remaining games if they are to stay in the competition.

Juvenille
On the juvenile front Portumna under 12 team were beaten by Cappattagle last Monday evening by a point. They were in hard luck a goal from a free in the dying seconds of the game denied them their first win in the competition. A point in any game is always a dangerous lead as was to prove in this case and it was hard luck on these young lads who played their hearts out a draw would have been the fairest result but sadly thats sport and there has to be a winner. Portumna's goal scorers were David O Meara Mark O Sullivan and Jack Canning.Final score Portumna 3-0 Cappattagle 3-2.

Best of luck to Dermot Brien and the under 10 team when they play Loughrea in the quarter final of their competition.

Denis Mc Laughlin our under 8 manager is hosting a blitz in the G.A.A. grounds on Saturday at 12 o clock. The club would like to welcome the teams participating in the blitz Killimor Tynagh-Abbey-Duniry Kiltormer Leitrim-Kilnadeemna and our own boys and wish them the best of luck. In all he expects over a hundred boys to participate on the day where we hope it will be an action packed day which resolves around enjoyment and sustaining participant involvement in the game of hurling.

Senior
Our senior hurlers have reached the quarter final of the competition after a powerful display against Kinvara at the week-end. The two teams had not met since the 2007 Couny final and one suspected that Kinvara had a point to prove. Joe Canning opened the scoring with a 65 metre free, but an early David Huban goal from a twenty metre free was the only time Kinvara went ahead in the game but Portumna responded well and went on to score 10 more points with Joe Canning scoring five of these and the other five points coming from the Smith brothers. Portumna went in at the interval with a seven point lead on a scoreline 0-13 to 1-3.

The game was over as a contest in the second half when Niall Hayes scored on the third minute after receiving a great pass from Leo Smith. Further points from Joe Canning, Eoin Lynch, Damien Hayes, Kevin Hayes and Peter Smith finished the game and when Joe Canning collected a pass from Andy Smith there was nothing on his mind but goal when he powered his way past the Kinvara rear guard and he duly delivered when he blast the ball past Colm Callanan to the net. The final score Portumna 2-22 Kinvara 1-10. This powerful display by Portumna keeps them in the running of reaching an unprecedented eighth Galway S.H.C. final in a row.

Junior A
The Junior A team had nine points to spare over Ballinasloe when they took to the field over the week-end and have now taken maximum points in the two games they have played. Four points from Joe Keane and points from Ronan Hayes and Shane O Rourke ensured they went in at halftime on a scoreline 0-6 to 0-1. They added six more points to their tally in the second half with Joe Keane adding four more points with Ronan Hayes the other scorer. Final score Portumna 0-12 Ballinasloe 0-3.

Junior B
The Junior B team had a point to prove after their last outing and that they did with a very convincing win over Kilconieron at the week-end. Points from Brian Dolphin, Darren Grady, Declan Madden, Alan Gorman, Johnathan Fahy and Michael Jordan gave them a half time lead of nine points on a scoreline 1-9 to 0-3. Johnathan Fahy the goal scorer. A goal by Stephen Brearton and points from Brian Dolphin, Stephen Treacy, Stephen Brearton and Johnathan Fahy in the second half brought the final score to 2-14 to 0-5.

Junior
Our junior A team got off to a good start in the first round of the championship last week-end when they had five points to spare over Tommie Larkins. Johnny (Waxie) Keane opened the scoring with a point after two minutes. Three minutes later Dave Canning received a pass from Ronan Hayes and he duly delivered by blasting the ball past the Tommie Larkins goalkeeper. Dave added three points to his tally with the other scores coming from Ronan Hayes and Joe Keane a 65. The teams went in at the interval on a scoreline 1-6 to 0-1. In the second half Tommies outscored Portumna 1-5 to 0-5 but it was not enough with Portumna finishing worthy winners with Portumna scores in the second half coming from Steve Killeen Joe Keane 0-2 and Dave Canning 0-2. The final score was Portumna 1-11 Tommie Larkins 1-6.

The junior B team had a disappointing evening in their first round championship game when they met up against a very strong Bearna na Forbacha team. Portumnas scores in the first half came from Enda Coleman(0-1) Brian Dolphin (0-2) Stephen Treacy (0-1) Johnathan Fahy (0-1) and Alan Gorman (1-1) The teams went in at the interval on a scoreline Portumna 1-6 Bearna 2-7. Portumna opened the scoring in the second half with a pointed free from Brian Dolphin but unfortunately that was to be their last score of the game with Bearna finishing very strong adding 1-11 to their first half score. Final score Portumna 1-7 Bearna na Forbacha 3-18.

Senior
Portumna senior team played Athenry on Sunday morning last. This turned out to be a very high scoring game and in the end Athernry had one point to spare. Senior
Two wins out of two Portumna senior hurlers produced in the second round of the senior hurling championship last Saturday. Joe Canning opened the scoring with a free he added four more points from placed balls with Niall Hayes Kevin Hayes and Ger Kelly (2) contributed the other Portumna points in the first half. Eoin Lynch started the attack which provided the first goal he duly delivered to Damien Hayes who gave a brillant pass to Joe Canning and Joe duly delivered to the net. Again Joe Canning was the scorer of Portumna's second goal when he stormed through the Beagh defence and rattled the ball into the roof of the net and through the netting. O Grady the goalkeeper stood no chance. Portumna lead at this stage by 2-9 to 0-1. But in fairness to Beagh they held their heads kept hurling and added six unanswered points. Portumna went in at the interval on a scoreline 2-9 0-7. Two points from Joe along with points from Niall and Chunky ensured Portumna would stay far enough ahead to claim their second win and put four points on the board. Portumna 2-13 Beagh 0-13.

Their next game is against Kinvara in two weeks time.

On the juvenile front the under 10 team had a narrow win last Monday evening against Loughrea on a scoreline 1-2 1-1. Well done to the lads involved their next game is against Tommie Larkins.

The under 12 team are training very hard in preparation for their championship which will be commencing in a few weeks time. They played a challange game against Lorrha last week in preparation for the games ahead.

The under 14 team were not so lucky against a strong Sarsfield team. Their final game in the group is against Craughwell on Monday evening at 6:30 in Portumna. This boys need a win badly to boost their morale as they have failed to win a game in the competion to date.

Senior
Portumna senior hurlers played their first championship game last Saturday against Clairnbridge. The opening ten minutes were getting back and into the swing of championship hurling as both teams were guilty of some wayward shooting. Pointed frees from Joe Canning (2) with other scores from Andy Smith, Kevin Hayes, Damien Hayes, Niall Hayes and Ger Kelly sent Portumna in at the interval four points up on a scoreline 0-8 0-4. Ten minutes into the second half it looked like Portumna were in trouble when the Bridge drew level as Mark Kerins punished repeated fouling by Portumna. Portumna raised the tempo after that with some degree of authority and scored nine points without reply. This was a satisfactory result for Portumna even though it took them longer than usual to find their stride. Portumna 0-18 Clairnbridge 0-10.

Their next game is on Saturday against Beagh in Loughrea at five thirty.

Junior
The junior B team earned another two points in the league with a three point win over Mountbellew Moylough on Friday last on a scoreline 0-12 to 1-6.

Club Fundraising

Portumna G.A.A Club cater for adult and juveniles in both Hurling and Gaelic football and as such provide the major source of recreation, competition and entertainment for a large proportion of our community. As such it takes a huge amount of finance to run the club to its current high standards. Having four adult and seven juvenile hurling teams, one adult and three juvenile football teams, it is very expensive to run effectively.

If you would like to support the club, please contact any of the club officers: Celia Keane (087 1342148), Dan Lynch (087 6422424), Fiona O'Meara (086 3478116), or the Club Captain - Ollie Canning (087 6856012).

Brief History of Portumna GAA

Portumna GAA club was founded in 1884. The first county championship won by the club was the Junior crown in 1914. The first Minor 'A' title won by the club was in 1948. Three more titles were added in 1990, 1991, and 1999, and a Minor 'B' title in 1998. This was due to the formation of a solid juvenile structure which brought many juvenile titles to the club in the eighties.

Portumna won it's second Junior 'A' title in 1982 and added an intermediate title ten years later in 1992. The winning of this title paved the way for our first-ever senior title in 2003.

The club went from strength to strength after this adding another three county titles in 2005, 2007, and 2008. On all occasions the Connacht title was added to the county crowns.

The club won the Galway Senior League in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. The greatest day in our long and proud history came on St. Patrick's Day in 2006 when we won our first-ever All-Ireland Senior Club title. We added our second title in 2008 and our third in 2009. Our  U21 team won the 'B' title in January last giving us three titles (1984, 1990 and 2009). Our Junior 'C' team won the county title last year for the first time in the club's history. The club has also been awarded the "Best Club Under the Sun" sponsored by Etihad Airlines.

Portumna GAA Club are indebted to Al and Noreen Hayes of Al Hayes Motors, our club's main sponsor, for their continued financial support and to everyone who has supported the club down through the years.
