Portumna 2-18 Dunloy 0-12
Portumna have kept their three in a row dreams in tact and have set up a St Patrick's meeting with Ballyhale Shamrocks. Dunloy got off to the better start on Sunday when just after the throw in Paddy Richmond put over the first point. This was the only time Dunloy were to get ahead and minutes later Damien Hayes levelled the scoring. Joe Canning scored three points - one of them was a goal bound effort from the 21 yard line which was tipped over the bar by the Dunloy goalie Mc Ghee to bring off a great save. Points by Chunky Hayes and a superb point from Peter Smith from his half back line kept Portumna ahead. Joe Canning gave a pin point pass to Ciaran Ryan which put him in on goal and the keeper had no chance when Ciaran blasted the ball to the net. Portumna went in at the interval eight points ahead. Dunloy in fairness threw all they had at Portumna in the first ten minutes and scored four unanswered points. But Joe Canning settled the nerves and tapped over a few frees to give breathing distance again. Predictably Joe was the games top scorer with a tally of 1-8 from the dead ball and this earned him the man of the match. When Joe Canning stood over a 21 yard free and blasted the ball to the net, it ended the game as a contest. Andy Smith added three points and Ciaran Ryan finished the scoring for Portumna with a point.

Scorers for Portumna Joe Canning 1-8 Damien Hayes 0-2 Kevin Hayes 0-3 Andy Smith 0-3 Peter Smith 0-1 Ciaran Ryan 1-1.

Well done to our senior hurlers on their win last Sunday they are now only sixty minutes away from achieving what no other club has done before in either hurling or football - winning three in a row All Ireland titles.

Junior News
Portumna junior A team were beaten in the league semi final last week-end in Tynagh by the narrowest of margains one point. Played in very cold conditions Loughrea got off to the better start and went three points ahead without reply. Scores from Brian Dolphin, Paddy Dolphin and a Willie Lawrence free meant Portumna went in at half time four points down on a scoreline of 1-4 to 0-3. Luckily for Portumna Loughrea had a lot of wides or they would have been further down going in at the break. In the second half Portumna battled well and three points from Willie Lawrance and points from Shane O'Rourke, Declan Madden and Shane Connors with Portumna's two goals coming from Johnny Kelly and Willie Lawrance was not enough to see them through to the final and Loughrea won the game by the narrowest of margins. Well done to all the Players who lined out on the day in such freezing conditions.

Senior County Final
Well done to our senior players on winning their fifth county title in seven years. In addittion to three All Ireland titles these men in the saffron and blue are a class apart and a class act. They completed the coveted three in a row by beating Loughrea in the county final. Joe Canning was the first Portumna player to score from a placed ball on just four minutes. But it was the impressive Damien Hayes who was on song and by the 14th minute had scored two of his goals and put Portumna ten points up.Although Johnny Maher scored a goal for Loughrea on 18 minutes by half time game was all but over as a contest as Portumna led by 3-10 to 1-5. Portumna needed a good start to the second half and when Damien Hayes collected an Andy Smith delivery he drilled the ball past Loughreas Stephen Morgan for a glorious hat trick .This display was to earn him man of the match. Damien went on to add another three points before the final whistle.Martin Dolphin polished off a thoroughly professional display from the county champions when scoring portumna's fifth goal. The skill speed movement and passion on show by Portumna was a joy to watch. Joe Canning finished the game on a scoreline of 1-10 from placed balls while Kevin Hayes, Eoin Lynch, Andy Smith and Martin Dolphin also added to Portumna's tally. The team have now taken a well earned rest and they will renew training in early January where they will be meeting the ulster champions in February.

Senior Hurling Championship Top Scorers Awards
Portumna sharpshooters Joe Canning and Damien Hayes have won the Advertees SHC top scorers and SHC top scorers from play. Joe was the top scorer with a tally of 8-67 for the championship a truly remarkable feat in itself. Damien registered a whooping 11-19 from play during the course of the championship. This is a massive achievement. The two players will receive their rewards plus Advertees playing gear at a special presentation in the Connacht Tribune office in December.

Club Fundraising

Portumna G.A.A Club cater for adult and juveniles in both Hurling and Gaelic football and as such provide the major source of recreation, competition and entertainment for a large proportion of our community. As such it takes a huge amount of finance to run the club to its current high standards. Having four adult and seven juvenile hurling teams, one adult and three juvenile football teams, it is very expensive to run effectively.

If you would like to support the club, please contact any of the club officers: Celia Keane (087 1342148), Dan Lynch (087 6422424), Fiona O'Meara (086 3478116), or the Club Captain - Ollie Canning (087 6856012).

Brief History of Portumna GAA

Portumna GAA club was founded in 1884. The first county championship won by the club was the Junior crown in 1914. The first Minor 'A' title won by the club was in 1948. Three more titles were added in 1990, 1991, and 1999, and a Minor 'B' title in 1998. This was due to the formation of a solid juvenile structure which brought many juvenile titles to the club in the eighties.

Portumna won it's second Junior 'A' title in 1982 and added an intermediate title ten years later in 1992. The winning of this title paved the way for our first-ever senior title in 2003.

The club went from strength to strength after this adding another three county titles in 2005, 2007, and 2008. On all occasions the Connacht title was added to the county crowns.

The club won the Galway Senior League in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. The greatest day in our long and proud history came on St. Patrick's Day in 2006 when we won our first-ever All-Ireland Senior Club title. We added our second title in 2008 and our third in 2009. Our  U21 team won the 'B' title in January last giving us three titles (1984, 1990 and 2009). Our Junior 'C' team won the county title last year for the first time in the club's history. The club has also been awarded the "Best Club Under the Sun" sponsored by Etihad Airlines.

Portumna GAA Club are indebted to Al and Noreen Hayes of Al Hayes Motors, our club's main sponsor, for their continued financial support and to everyone who has supported the club down through the years.
