Welcome to Portumna G.A.A. Club website. As you are probably aware most clubs are funded by a local lotto and our club is no different. We run a weekly lotto every Saturday night which assists in the funding of the everyday running of the club. This initative helps keep funds in the club and it gives everyone the opportunity to win some cash. Our draw is held on Saturday night in the local pubs and we invite all members, players, supporters and members of the community to support and develop our club and provide us with the first class facilities for all our adult and juvenile players. We invite and would love to get in touch with people from Portumna who are living all over the country to support our lotto.

Portumna is a club who has played a pivitol part in the promotion and development of hurling in Galway over the last number of years having won three All Ireland titles and five county titles in the last seven years. We have provided senior and junior players on numerous county teams.

The lotto starts at 2000 euros and one hundred euros is added each week. Select four numbers from 1-28. If anyone matches four numbers selected on the night they win or share the jackpot amount. If there is no winner then win or share match three prize of one hundred euro. If there is no match three 100 euros is divided between local charities in the community. Tickets can be purchased at 2 euros or three for 5 euros. The club are also selling yearly lotto tickets which cost 100 euros which enters you into 50 +2 free draws. Payment options are available from club treasurer Celia Keane on 087 1342148. We are hoping to get as many people as possible to purchase the annual lotto as it gives the club a platform to budget during the year and it allows members to be in every draw. Results will be posted in the local shops and church newsletter. They are also available on the club websites: www.portumnagaa.ie and www.portumna.net/gaa. We wish everyone the best of luck and thank you for your support.

Fiona O'Meara, Club Secretary.

Our junior A team remain undefeated in the championship after a two point victory over Skehana last week-end. Playing with a strong breeze in the first half Portumna went in at the interval seven points ahead on a scoreline 1-8 to 0-4 and indeed Lou Hartes charges should have been alot more ahead were it not for alot of squandered chances. Skehana piled on the pressure in the second half and eventually clawed back the lead bit by bit adding 1-6 to their first half total. Portumna added four points to their tally. Their final group game is against Barnana Forbacha.

Feile na nGael
Last week-end saw Feile na nGael come to Galway for the first time since 1993. Portumna were hosts to Tooreen the Mayo County Champions. The week-end kicked off with Portumna playing Tooreen on Friday where Portumna emerged the victors. Well done to both teams who had to play in terrible weather conditions. Then both teams were fed in the Clubhouse before going on to Loughrea to participate in the parade.

Saturday was an early start for both teams as they travelled to Mullagh to play the home team and Kickhams Creggan of Antrim. Portumna played the Antrim champions in the first game and were narrowly beaten. Their next game was against Mullagh whom they beat. Mullagh, Kickham Creggan and Portumna ended up on the same points which meant a play off had to take play between the three teams. Fatigue was setting in at this stage and conditions did not help matters Portumna put in two great performances to set them in the semi final against Muinbheag of Carlow. Unfortunatey for our boys it was to be the end of the road for them the two extra games proved too much in the end and they were narrowly beaten by the Carlow champions.

A big thank you to the Mullagh Club and the ladies committee for the food and refreshments which they provided all day it was appreciated. Tooreen and Portumna went back to the G.A.A.grounds on Sat evening for a barbaque which was kindly sponsored by Stronges pub. A big thank you to Martin Donoghue for providing the entertainment on the night and to the boys and girls who danced. Thanks to the parents who hosted the Toreen players over the week-end and who supported the club all year it was very much appreciated. A special thanks to the management team of Joe Heagney, Sean Treacy, Gene Mc Donagh and Ger Moran for all their hard work and dedication with this panel of players and in particular to our panel of hurlers who represented the club with pride over the week-end. Both teams exchanged a little token of the week-end with the Tooreen Mentors presenting the club with a Tooreen framed jersey signed by the players who had participated in Feile. It will hold pride of place in our clubhouse.

Padraig Lohan's charges set the pace from the throw in and went in at the interval eleven points ahead on a scoreline 2-8 to 0-3 with Shane Connors and Tristan Hoary the goal scorers. It was inevitable that St Thomas would be unable to come back and Portumna added 2-4 to their first half tally giving a final score Portumna 4-12 St Thomas 1-5. Cian Royston and Tristan Hoary the goal scoring heros of the second half. Portumnas second game in the championship will take place on Wednesday evening in Ahascragh at 7-15 against the home team.

On Saturday both teams travel to Mullagh where they will take on the local team and Kickams Creggan of Antrim. Portumna play Mullagh at 10am while Toreen play the Antrim Champions at 11am. Junior A
The junior A team had a good start in the first round of the championship with a four point win over near neighbours Kiltormer on Sat evening. Lou Hartes charges had just pipped their opponents by one point earlier in the league and everyone was looking forward to a very exciting game. Owen Treacy was the first Portumna player to get on the scoresheet with a point from a 65. A goal and point from Ronan Hayes and four more pointed frees from Owen who was very accurate in his free taking all day gave Portumna a six point lead at the interval on a scoreline 1-6 to 0-3. Indeed Portumna should have been farther ahead but unfortunately they squandered alot of chances hitting wide after wide. Kiltormer upped the ante in the second half and scored two unanswered points reducing the lead. Portumna did not panic and Paddy Dolphin put over two points to put another bit of distance between the teams. Eamann Lynch added two points with Owen Treacy and Ciaran Ryan the other two Portumna scorers in the second half. Final score Portumna 1-13 Kiltormer 0-12. Senior
Our senior team got their championship campaign off to a good start with victory over Tommie Larkins in Athenry last Saturday. The game was over by the end of the first quarter when goals from Andy Smith, Niall Hayes and Damien Hayes gave them an unassilable lead.

Andy Smith was the first player to score after two minutes with Joe canning adding a free. The first goal came after three minutes when Damien Hayes crashed the ball to the net after a great pass from canning. Andy Smith gave Darra Starr no chance for Portumna's second goal. Portumna's third goal came in the thirteenth minute when Joe Keane picked out Andy Smith and when he saw Niall Hayes in space the centre forward hit the net and Portumna were seven points ahead. Points from Joe and Davey Canning and Martin Dolphin made it 3-8 to 1-2 on 21 mins. Further points from Smith brothers Leo and Peter and point from Martin Dolphin gave Portumna a a fifteen point lead at the interval.

Starr produced a great save from Joe Canning midway through the second half but this did not deter Portumna as they added four points by the 50th minute. Portumna concluded their scoring with two points from Niall Hayes and a pointed free from Joe Canning. Portumna 3-20 Tommie Larkins 2-10.

Earlier on they were interviewed and put through their paces by the three judges Kieran O Brien Aine Killelia and Ann Connolly who had no easy task in their selection. A big thank you to them for their expertise on the night.

The night began with the Roses being introduced to the audience with their handsome escorts in toe. The talent these girls displayed was a credit to themselves their families and the busisnesses they represented. While the judges went away to make their final decision the club made a donation to three local students who were going to Figi on voluntary work.

The winning Rose was Martha Gorman representing Stronges Pub. Martha now goes on to represent Portumna in the Galway heats which will take place in the Shearwater Hotel in Ballinasloe this Sat night. I have no doubt Martha will do Portumna proud and the club would like to wish her the very best.

Senior
Our senior team secured another two points in the league when they had a convincing win over Craughwell on Sat on a scoreline 4-18 0-18.

U-21
Our u21 team bowed out of the champinship after a hard fought game against Leitrim / Kilnadeema last Sunday. Leitrim were the first to score. Portumna squandered a lot of chances in the first ten minutes which in the end came back to haunt them. Martin Dolphin was the first Portumna player to get on the scoreboard with a pointed free and it was the same player who minutes later added another point from a free. With the wind against them Leitrim settled well into the game and put over five unanswered points before Portumna got their only score from play from the stick of Owen Treacy. Ger Kelly struck a long range free which was well fielded by Martin Dolphin and when he was brought to ground on the edge of the square he had nothing only goal on his mind when he stood over the free and he duly delivered. This put Portumna a point ahead going in at the interval.

With a strong wind behind them in the second half Leitrim got off to a good start and struck over four points without reply. Portumna scored three points from frees through Owen Treacy and Martin Dolphin and things began to look up when Ronan Hayes found the net after a goal mouth scramble. Portumna were just coming into the game when disaster struck a goal mouth scramble at the other end resulted in a goal. This was to end Portumna's run in the championship and they were beaten on a scoreline of 2-7 to 1-14. The difference in the two teams was that Leitrim were able to score at their ease while Portumna had to fight hard to get their scores and a point from play in the whole hour would not be worthy to win any game. A big thank you to to the management team of Johnny Keane, Garret Heagney, Eoin Lynch and Mike Dolphin for all their hard work with these bunch of lads.

He was chairman of the club in 1989. He lined out at centre forward against Abbey Duniry in the intermediate final of the same year but ended up on the losing side when they were beaten on a scoreline of 2-5 to 3-6 after a replay. The club would like to convey its deepest sympathy to his wife Una and to his family and friends.

Brief History of Portumna GAA

Portumna GAA club was founded in 1884. The first county championship won by the club was the Junior crown in 1914. The first Minor 'A' title won by the club was in 1948. Three more titles were added in 1990, 1991, and 1999, and a Minor 'B' title in 1998. This was due to the formation of a solid juvenile structure which brought many juvenile titles to the club in the eighties.

Portumna won it's second Junior 'A' title in 1982 and added an intermediate title ten years later in 1992. The winning of this title paved the way for our first-ever senior title in 2003.

The club went from strength to strength after this adding another three county titles in 2005, 2007, and 2008. On all occasions the Connacht title was added to the county crowns.

The club won the Galway Senior League in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. The greatest day in our long and proud history came on St. Patrick's Day in 2006 when we won our first-ever All-Ireland Senior Club title. We added our second title in 2008 and our third in 2009. Our  U21 team won the 'B' title in January last giving us three titles (1984, 1990 and 2009). Our Junior 'C' team won the county title last year for the first time in the club's history. The club has also been awarded the "Best Club Under the Sun" sponsored by Etihad Airlines.

Portumna GAA Club are indebted to Al and Noreen Hayes of Al Hayes Motors, our club's main sponsor, for their continued financial support and to everyone who has supported the club down through the years.
