Thursday 2nd September

Portumna and District Active Retirement
Our first meeting will be on the 2nd September when we hope to see a good turn out of members. Our Autumn and Winter activities will be put forward for discussion that night. On the 9th of September Wolf Lorrien will be giving an illustrated talk on Art development from the early cave dwellers to modern day. Time to step out and join us, your input is important. New members will be very welcome.

Friday 3rd September

Table Quiz - Portumna Arts Group Fundraiser
A table quiz in aid of Portumna's forthcoming Shorelines Arts Festival will take place in the Boathouse Bar on Fri Sept 3rd from 9pm. Prizes galore including student team and a fun night for all with Mick Brady as Quizmaster and some Arts questions to stimulate the Arts minded. Saturday 4th September

Séan Nós Dancing Workshop in Shragh Hall
A Séan Nós Dancing Workshop with Emma O'Sullivan, Star of The All Ireland Talent Show will commence on Saturday September 4th in Shragh Hall from 11am to 3pm. Traditional Music Lessons
Traditional Music Lessons now at The Portumna Social Services Day Care Centre, starting Saturday the 4th of September at 11am. All inquiries to Maureen at: 086 199 9828.

Presentation of Water Safety Certificates
Water safety certificates will be presented on Saturday Sept 4th at 3pm at the Portumna Swimming area.

Portumna Red Cross Annual Church Gate Collection
The Annual Church gate collection for the Portumna Red Cross will be held on Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th September at Churches in the area. All monies collected is spent in the area as far as possible. The local ESSO filling station on the Bridge Rd. is contributing €1 per car wash over the next 2 months to the Portumna Unit, if your car needs a wash why not go there.

Monday 6th September

Adult & Post-Leaving Cert (PCL) Morning Course
In Portumna Community School from Sept 2010 to May 2011. Community Care (Care Assistant/Classroom Assistant). Features: Fetac- Level 5 certification. Mornings only ( 9.30am -1.30pm). Friday 10th September

Aladdin in Shragh Hall, Woodford
A meeting will be held for anyone interested taking part in a performance of the Pantomine 'Aladdin' on Friday Sept. 10th at 8pm. 'Aladdin' will be staged shortly after Christmas. Actors/singers, adults and children required and enthusiastic and talented backstage help needed. All are welcome. For further information contact Louise on 087-995 4872.

Sunday 12th September

Portumna Forest Picnic
The 2010 Portumna Forest Picnic will take place on Sunday 12th September at Portumna Forest Park. The day is aimed at families with the emphasis on locally produced food and admission to the public is free. The event is being held to mark National Organic Week 2010 and is being coordinated by the Irish Cattle & Sheep Farmers' Association (ICSA), the Irish Organic Farmers & Growers Association (IOFGA) and Slowfood.

The aim of the event is to raise awareness and the profile of Irish food in a rural setting. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Portumna forest that sweeps down to Lough Derg, the overall theme is good for nature, good for you and will focus on sustainable food production and nature.

The variety of food and drink on offer will showcase all the best of local Irish organic production. There will be demonstrations on animal rearing, bee keeping, butchering, cheese making and fish smoking as well as AgriAware's mobile farm with live animals for petting. Other activities on the day will include forest walks, mountain bike trekking, storytelling for children and face painting.

Thursday 16th September

Portumna Shorelines Arts Festival, 16th – 19th September
With just over three weeks to go, don't miss the 3rd annual Portumna Shorelines Arts Festival from 16th – 19th September. Highlights include a great line up of nightly entertainment attractions and a bumper programme of events to keep all the family entertained. As a multi disciplinary arts festival the programme includes the annual arts exhibition, dance, theatre, music, poetry, film, storytelling and performance.
  • For followers of traditional music, song and dance, a mega concert in the Shannon Oaks Hotel on Thursday, 16th Sept., featuring guest artist Matt Keane, dancers Mystic Force and a multitude of local musicians, singers and dancers. An event for all the family, €10/€8.
  • Singer Mick Hanly, who wrote "Past the Point of Rescue" with support from local singer-songwriter Joe Casey at the Shannon Oaks Hotel, Saturday, 18th Sept. at 8pm. Tickets €10 at the door.
  • Shorelines Showcase, an entertaining evening of miscellany, with writers Noel Monahan and Mai Leonard, in the Church of Ireland, Friday, 17th September at 8pm. Tickets €10.
  • An outdoor drama, The Weaver's Grave, adapted by local writer Mark Conroy, will be staged at Portumna Abbey on Sunday afternoon, 19th September.
  • Con Tempo String Quartet, the wonderful Galway Ensemble-in-Residence from Rumania, closing the festival on Sunday, 19th Sept. at 7.30pm. Tickets €10.
  • The Shorelines Arts Exhibition returns featuring art, photography, furniture and sculptures from local and visiting artists.
  • Children will be entertained with balloon sculpture making, a story telling caravan, felt making, clown dance and drama workshops, the young children of the area will be very busy.
  • Literary and Film evenings, Book Launches and a Shoreline Showcase of works from local songwriters and writers assisted by Noel Monahan and Mai Leonard as readers and workshop facilitators, catering for all levels and age groups.
  • With Hip-Hop, Movement and Dance workshops from Cherrie Worthington Eyre, Drama with Paula & Philip Short, a Band Workshop with Tony Hogan and Youth Theatre for teenagers, this week-end will be vibrant, creative, inclusive and above all fun.

Barn Dance in Aid of Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin
Grab your cowboy hats and head on over to the Ferry Inn where Teresa and her posse will be laying on a rootin tootin shindig! On the night there will be a mighty fine 50 foot marquee decked out as a genuine barn, complete with saloon! Live music will be The JD's who guarantee to have ya'll swinging from the rafters! Fill your boots with our free BBQ and round off the night with a hoe-down to the thigh slapping tunes of DJ Gavin!
