Pen Pushers
The pen-pushers Creative writing group began sessions in October 2006, arising from a demand within the Maple Poetry Group, for a separate, focused writing group. Its main function is to create a space for anyone interested in the written arts to meet other like minded individuals and share work and ideas in both poetry and prose. The peer-led group meets every second Wednesday night, from 7.30pm until 9.30pm. it is a very informal group of writers, comprising of 7 core members and a handful of ad hoc members who float in and out and back in again to the group when prose pieces, novel chapters or a poem are written. If you are interested in coming along any night, please do so, and, if possible, bring a piece of your own writing with you, photocopied about 6 times to share with the group, its also good to bring an open mind.

Portumna Tidy Towns
Spring will be upon us pretty soon and the Tidy Towns Group would like to encourage all interested in keeping the town tidy and looking well to get involved in their own area. Marks were up in 2007 in the National Tidy Towns Competition sponsored by Super Valu and it would be good to maintain this standard. An amenity Grant was recently sanctioned to further enhance the Marina Area – work on this will commence in the Spring. The bottle banks area at the rear of the County Council Offices are now being monitored by CCTV and any indiscriminate dumping which also includes leaving empty cardboard boxes, plastic bags etc. at this area will be picked up by the cameras. If the bottle banks are full, we would ask people not to leave recyclables at the banks. There are further recycle banks at Emerald Star which are available to the public. Portumna Tidy Towns would like to thank Galway County Council for all their help during 2007.

Portumna Scouts
Portumna Scout Troop paid a welcomed visit to some of Portumna’s latest residents when they called into the recently opened Portumna Retirement village. It was a most enjoyable evening with the Scouts performing a collection of well known Christmas Carols, they were not the only visitors as Santa made a surprise visit and took time out of his busy schedule to distribute some gifts. The group of twenty Scouts made themselves useful serving tea / coffee, cakes and sandwiches, and sat and chatted with each of the residents. The Scouts would like to thank Tony and Alicia Williams for the opportunity to perform and have promised to call again in the new year for a return visit to see how everyone is settling in.
