Powers Cross Post Office
Mattie and Margaret Power retired from business on the 31st December, three generations of the Power family worked in the business totaling 142 years. It was a meeting place for people collecting their pensions and daily papers, it is sad to see rural Post Offices and shops closing down as they were and still are an integral part of the Rural Community. We wish them well in the next phase of their lives together.

We are a group of readers who meet once a month where we discuss a chosen book for that month. It is always interesting and surprising the varied reactions members have to books. Also, you will discover books that you might never have chosen to read and find that you actually enjoy it. For a relaxed hour of sharing thoughts, reading suggestions and an opportunity for meeting people with similar interests, do come along on Monday, February 4th when we will discuss the book of short stories- "View from Castle Rock" by Alice Munro. Portumna Soccer Club
The weather played havoc with fixtures last week-end with all home games cancelled. The only team that played last week-end were the U9s who took part in a Futsal blitz in Mountmellick. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Futsal, it is a form of indoor football which originated in South America and is designed to bring out the best of technical ability rather than the physical side of the game. Portumna U9s performed supremely well and won all 3 of their matches demonstrating admirably that they are well able to play football with the best of them. Fixtures for next week-end are as follows and are obviously subject to weather conditions: U10s v Gallen at home. KO 10.00am U11s v Killeigh at home. KO 10.45am U12s v Clara at home. KO 11.45am U8s will have a blitz in Mountmellick with the time yet to be confirmed. David Hanley was selected as the U10 Player of the Month for December 2007.
