Rugby News
Portumna face a very tough challenge when they face Corinthians in the Junior Cup at 2pm on Sunday. Due to the terrible weather and the Christmas break, Portumna are without a game since early December and will no doubt be a bit rusty when they face the cup winners of two years ago. Over the years Portumna have caused some major shocks in this competition and on Sunday they will be looking for another big scalp. The game is at home for Portumna and they are hoping for some decent weather to attract down a crowd for this huge game. The match is being sponsored by The Boathouse Bar.

We would like to invite your group to submit a small piece (about 5 – 6 lines) about your organisation i.e. your activities, achievements, up coming events etc. The newsletter will be distributed to all the Parishes in South East Galway. This could be a good way to inform the community about your group and perhaps recruit some new members. Sign Out Youth Café
Na Calai CDP It has been a very busy and exciting few months for “Sign Out” Youth Café project, getting all the services in place before opening Irelands newest Youth Café. Once the snag list is completed and the ESB connected “Sign Out” will be open as a place for all 15 to 18 year olds to meet up with their friends, play some pool, host dynamic workshops, watch matches and listen to their favorite music on the juke box. Even bigger changes are about to take place on site where the sod will soon be turned for our All weather pitch. Plans have been drawn up and sent out to tender to construct an Astro-turf pitch adjacent to “Sign Out”, which will complement the overall youth facility. Funding has been allocated under the Sports Capital Programme and the site has been provided by the VEC. Help is always welcome for the long term sustainability and running of this project, if you are interested in joining our committee or want further information about this youth initiative please contact Susan or Joan in Na Calai CDP 090 9759946 or 086 2051346.

Portumna Community School
Study Skills Seminar for 5th Years: In order to improve the repertoire of techniques available to our 5th years we have engaged Student Enrichment Services to deliver a Study Skills seminar on a Saturday in February. This will be held in the school from 9.30 a.m. – 3.30 p.m. and is recommended for students who wish to add to their skills, in note taking, memorising, effective learning and planning a study timetable. Any 5th Year student who wishes to take part and has not already given their names to Mr. Long should do so immediately.

Schools Cross Country: Yes, its that time of the year again! So dust off your spikes and get training for the Cross Country Season. Cross Country running is a great way to get fit for the New Year and represent your school. There are four categories for Boys and Girls: Minor – U14, Junior – U15, Inter – U17, Senior – U19. In the past, the older categories have been poorly represented and we are appealing this year for the Senior students to get running. Training takes place Monday and Tuesday evening next week from 4.00 to 4.45 p.m. Meet at the Gym.

Senior Girls Soccer: Yesterday, Thursday (17th), the senior girls soccer panel travelled to Galway to compete in the Connacht Senior Girls Quarter Final against Swinford. Portumna C.S. played against a strong breeze for the first half which made it very difficult to score. At half time it was Swinford 3 – Portumna 0. But Portumna came back much stronger in the second half with Ciara Molloy, Shauna Grady and Veronica Burke scoring goals. However Swinford were stronger on the day and the final score was Swinford 6 – Portumna 3. All of the team would like to thank Fr. Abe Kennedy for training us all year. Also thanks to Ms. A. Flaherty for coming with us to all of our matches.

Congratulations: Congratulations on the successes of past pupils, as highlighted in the most recent issue of the Connacht Tribune. To John Muldoon, Gortanumera who was Sports Personality of the Month, and to Dr. Damien Kelly, Tynagh, who graduated with a Ph.D.

Soccer News
Last week-end again saw many matches cancelled due to the poor weather conditions. The U8s however took part in a fantastically well organised indoor Futsal blitz in Mountmellick and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Like the U9s the previous week they won all 3 of their matches with the added bonus of not conceding a single goal. As a squad they, displayed a brilliant range of footballing skills, from exquisite ball control to superb passing movements and terrific goalkeeping. Some of the goals scored would not have looked out of place if one had been watching the Premiership and supporters could only applaud and smile in admiration at the audacity of 8 year olds. Eric Flaherty has been named U9 player of the month for December.

The Atacama Crossing
The Atacama Desert is one of the driest regions in the world. Occupying much of northern Chile, the desert stretches nearly 1000 km south from the Peruvian border and lies between the Pacific coastal range and the Andes mountains. It is these mountain ranges, in fact, that limit the rainfall in these arid highlands to almost immeasurable levels. The regions that receive the most moisture do so from fog at a rate of about 1 cm/year. Shane O Rourke son of Rosealeen and John-Joe, is crossing this treacherous desert over a 7 day period from the 30th March to the 7th April, all in aid of “Acorn to Oak” childcare sports fund. All the money raised will go towards the fund as Shane’s expenses are fully sponsored by his employer APEX Geoservices Ltd. The Atacama Crossing is a 6 stage, 250 Kilometer footrace. The six stages will range from 20-80 Kilometers over the seven days. The stages are arranged to cover the most spectacular and varied parts of the Desert, including salt basins, canyons, and village oases under a spectacular backdrop of the Andes, the largest mountain chain in South America. Each stage will consist of several checkpoints that competitors must pass through to collect water and where medical assistance is available. The longest stage, stage 5, will be approximately 80 Kilometers (50 miles) long and competitors will have 48 hours to complete it, meaning most will run or walk this stage through the darkness of night. All competitors must carry all their own food, gear and clothing while navigating approximately 25 checkpoints.
