Easter Parade
Don’t rain on my parade, that was the prayer of the organisers of this years parade. From early morning the helpers were erecting the railings along the main thoroughfare, the reviewing stand was wired and the amplification was in place everything was ready all that was needed now were lots of floats, and they rolled into town from 2pm onwards. This was going to be one of the best parades ever seen in Portumna, there were walking floats from the Portumna scouts, 80 in all they had giant figures from the sporting arena “not men but giants”, United Nations bomb disposal jeeps and personnel, other floats included anti incinerator, turf cutting war heats up, the Lord Mayor Donie O Meara came up the street in a horse drawn carriage he is always there for local events. The last float was the Portumna winning team they came up Brendan Street in an open top double decker bus. The entourage was met by Ollie Turner from Galway Bay FM he interviewed Andrew Smith, Ollie Canning and the team manager Jimmy Heverin it was a magic moment, Ollie Turner is a natural when it comes to interviewing sports personality’s. The overall winners were the Lorrha variety group with a float depicting the HSE. To run a parade of this size needs a lot of hands on people, we wish to thank the local Red Cross, the Fire Brigade, to Sergeant Frank Ryan the local Gardai who implemented a traffic flow programme during the parade and erecting no parking bollards pre parade, Liam O Neill (Quitmans) for the use of his artic trailor as a reviewing stand, Sean Murphy (Woodpark) and his family, Ray who did all the electrical work and Ian the Health and Safety Officer. Galway County Council for their help with the Traffic cones and collecting them after the parade, the Mart committee for the use of their grounds as an assembly point before the parade, And finally the Tidy Towns committee who had Noel Keane cleaning up the Town the following morning The Master of ceremonies was Richard (Dick) Ridge he was in top form. The organizers were Dick Ridge, Bridie Kelly, Jim Hynes, Liam Keane, Bertie Hanlon and Ian Foulger.

Presentation to Pardy Family
When Richard Ridge and Jim Hynes were planning this years Patrick’s Day/ Easter Parade they decided to make a presentation to John Pardy and his family on behalf of the people Portumna, and organizations in and around the parish, along with John on the review stand was his wife Teresa, son Eoin, daughter Sinead and her daughter Ava, also Johns mother inlaw Mrs Hanney. The Shannon Oaks Hotel which John set up in 1997 was one of the success stories of Portumna and many people saw it as a home from home venue for parties, weddings, get-togethers or whatever. He supported many clubs and groups with sponsorship, free rooms for meetings and lots more. He sold the Hotel early last year and it was thought that by way of expressing thanks to him we commissioned Brian Murray a local gifted cabinet maker to come up with a piece that depicted Portumna and he carved a beautiful one off piece based on the Portumna Oak it was truly breathtaking to look at. John had a soft spot for Saint Dympna’s day care centre on the Shannon road and with that in mind a young man named David Hodgins was appointed to present the piece to the Pardy family. We wish to thank everyone especially businesses who contributed to this rewarding event. John’s son Eoin has opened a Thai restaurant in Dublin’s millennium walkway next to the Morrisson Hotel through the Italian quarter we wish him well, so if you are ever in Dublin call in and see Eoin you will feel very welcome
