Shane the Runner
Let us keep Shane ORourke in mind this week as he crosses the Atacama Desert in Chile, the hottest desert in the World. Shane trained hard for the last year in order to get into shape for this grueling race, running up keepers hill in the silver mines Nenagh and on Curracloe Beach in County Wexford. The event started last Sunday a group of local Chilean musicians played traditional Mapuche tunes at the starting line as the Atacama Crossing 2008 competitors shuffled from foot to foot in anticipation of the start. After a moment of silence for friends of RacingThePlanet who had recently passed away, the competitors took off at 8 a.m. The front-runners finished the course in about four and a half hours; the last runner crossed the line at almost exactly 6 pm, ten hours after setting off. American Dean Kaznares is in the lead after one stage, with Welshman Rob James following close on his tail. Mimi Anderson won the women’s division by a wide margin. Temperatures soared during the day to around 40 degrees Celsius as the competitors made their way over the course’s highest point, down through winding canyons, across a wide valley of loose rock and scree, up through narrower canyons dotted with ancient rock carvings, and finally up a hill to Campsite Two, which sits on a ledge overlooking a large ravine and the mountain range that separates Chile, Bolivia and Argentina.
