Galway Community Games
The county finals of Galway Community Games took place recently in Ballindereen. Portumna athletes had a very sucessful outing. Pride of place going to Owen Tracey who had a great victory in the Under 14 Shot Putt, this is a great win for Owen and we wish him the best of luck representing Galway at the National games. Caira Walsh claimed the silver medal in the highly competitive girls long puck. Jessica Canning put in a sterling performance to get third in the girls Shot Putt. On the track Sean Touhy had a great run to win the bronze over 800m under 14 in his first year in this age group, while our flyer at under 8s 60m Shauna Muldoon had a great race to claim third spot. Well done to all the medal winners and equally to all those who competed at local and county level in the Community Games this year.

Portumna Town FC
Local County Councillor Mr Willie Burke is delighted to confirm that Galway county council has approved funding of €200,000 for the development of an “all weather pitch” on their site on Shannon road. The project will see the development of a 70 meters by 50 meters AWP with two divisions on existing site. We as councillors approved a recreation and an amenity framework, which called for the supporting of two projects in each electoral area. Councillor Burke went on to say that this is just reward for the tremendous work that the local committee have been doing over the last five years.

Galway County Beaveree Day
On Saturday last a total of 184 Beaver Scouts and 56 Beaver Leaders plus many friends arrived at Portumna Forest Park to take part in this year’s Galway County Beaveree Day. The event this year was organized by the combined efforts of Abbey/Duniry, Carrabane, Craughwell, Gort and Portumna Beaver Leaders with a lot of help on the day from the Scouts of Carrabane and Portumna and particularly Dick Ridge for his continuous energy and dedication to Scouting in Portumna. We are very grateful also to Liam Walsh who provided our novelty “Trailer transportation” to and from bases proving a great hit with all of our participants young and old. The event ran from 11am until 3:30pm in which time the Beavers successfully completed 6 challenges which included a Blindfolded Sisal Trail, Gutter Game, Water based activity, Treasure hunt, Word search and an obstacle course. Having collected their prize of a “Bertie Beaver” badge at each base the Beavers were awarded their Ice Cream as part of Ice Cream Saturday in aid of Down syndrome Ireland. The Beaveree event raised a grand total of €378-00 for Down syndrome Ireland. The organizers would like to extend their gratitude to all the Leaders who helped make this a special day for the Beaver Scouts who attended from across the county. Well done to all the Beavers from Tuam, Williamstown, Craughwell, Portumna, Abbey/Duniry, Claregalway, Renmore, St.Pats, Gort, Knocknacarra and Killanin. Special thanks to The Irish Red Cross (Portumna Branch) who attended and carried out first aid as required throughout the day. Thanks also to Tony Williams for his kind sponsorship of buns and cakes for the leaders Tea and Coffee reception on arrival. We extend our gratitude also to Mr. Kevin Donnellan of Coillte for his continued support of Scouting in making the Forest Park available for the event. Galway County Commissioner Mr. Tommy Flaherty attended the event also and our provincial Commissioner Mrs. Julie Malone were both very impressed with the Beaveree day and the standard attained by the Beavers of county Galway.

Portumna Scouts Section help Tidy Towns
The Tidy towns committee knew whom to call on for Man /Girl Power to kick start their Tidy towns campaign. Friday 30 May, the scouts got stuck into the flower beds outside of the Catholic church on St Brendan’s road. The area was in need of a complete makeover and in true scout style it was transformed into an attractive and manageable state. The Scouts were out again all this weekend, Friday evening they set up and obstacle course in the Forest park for the county beaver day, which was held on Saturday the 7 June. The Beaver day was a huge success and was attended by over 200 beaver scouts from all over the county much credit for its success was due to the hard work of beaver leader and Scout group leader Brendan Murray who put in incredible amounts of time energy and enthusiasm. On the day the scouts ran an obstacle course they also acted as guides for the different groups, and finally closed the day by setting up an Ice cream parlor. They dished out over 50 blocks of HB ice cream, which was kindly donated by Supervalu Portumna in conjunction with HB Ice cream. Their efforts earned Down syndrome Ireland €400 on the day. No rest for the wicked the scouts were back out again in big numbers on Sunday as the troop hosted their annual HB Ice cream Sunday in Portumna playground once again in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. The weather held up which brought out great support, with Music by retro DJ Connie Copage a carnival atmosphere was easily created. Super soakers gave great amusement and mischief as a number of the scouts took a soaking in the stocks. There was face painting, free balloons and lots and lots of delicious HB Ice cream. The combined fundraising by the scouts netted a grand total of €1,145 for Down syndrome Ireland. This day was made possible due to the kind support of the local Fire Brigade who supplied power and water on the day, the scouts would like to thank Billy Horigan for his assistance and all those who gave so generously to this worthy cause.
