National Skills Winner
Like father, like son, so the saying goes and in the case of Colm Corcoran who hails from Lorrha, that is certainly the case. Described by those who know Colm well as a genius with an engine, Colm’s father Joe is also a master of the mechanical world. Born in Mayo and raised in Lorrha, Colm attended Lorrha N.S. and went on to Secondary in Portumna. However, his interest was not in books but in how an engine worked and so he was destined to follow his heart and pursue a career in the mechanical world, a world he has a real passion for. He began work four years ago with Al Hayes motors in Portumna and while there his apprenticeship took him to college in Galway, Limerick and Waterford. Last year his instructor in Limerick entered Colm for the National Skills competition which is organised by the Department of Education but due to a family bereavement, Colm withdrew his name. However, his instructor in Waterford also recognised the same talents while he was completing the final phase of his apprenticeship and so Colm was entered for the competition earlier this year after coming successfully through a College competition. Along with five more entrants from around the Country, Colm was chosen as the overall winner and is now recognised as the National Mechanic of the year 2008. He now goes forward to represent Ireland in the European skills competition in September and is looking forward to the challenge. The awards he picked up this year include Volkswagen Audi award vehicle diagnostics, National skills competition, Department of Education & Science National Skills Competition, overall winner 2008, Automobile Apprentice of the year S.I.M.I. 2008, Department of Education and Science Automobile Technology 2008.
