Credit Union Honours Portumna GAA Club
On Friday evening 11th July 2008 Portumna & District Credit Union Ltd hosted a special function of celebration & presentations to the Officers, Management, Players & Captains of the Portumna Hurling Team who have won 2 All Ireland Club Finals in 2006 & 2008. The function was held in the Office of the Credit Union , St Patrick St. Portumna. Special guest for the evening was John McIntyre, Sports Editor , Connacht Tribune, native of Lorrha & educated at the former Portumna College. John spoke passionately about his life commitment to hurling at all levels , club & county & his deep admiration for the Portumna Club,officers, management & players. John presented the specially commissioned plaques to the 2 Captains , Eugene McEntee , Captain 2006 & Ollie Canning , Captain 2008. A special plaque was also presented to Kay Heverin, standing in for her brother Jimmy Heverin , retired Manager of the Hurling Team, by Brendan Murray, Director & one of the founder members of the Credit Union. The main presentation of the evening was to the Club & was presented by Sean O Dwyer, Chairman, Credit Union to Martin Carty , Chairman GAA Club. This was a specially commissioned Wall Plaque, done in Marquerty by local Master Craftsman, Brian Murray & depicted all 15 players in silhouette around the Globe with Ireland showing Lough Derg embedded in it.A flag with an acorn rises high above the lake. The Plaque, which measures 80 cm x 50 cms, contains 19 different species of wood & 108 individual pieces . In the course of his speech , Sean O Dwyer highlighted the similarities between the Credit Union & the GAA Club. Both are “rooted” in the local community & both are run by volunteers who freely give of their time for the betterment of the local community. He also spoke of the very important part played by local schools in encouraging student participation in games & thereby promoting a healthy lifestyle among young people. Martin Carty , Chairman, Portumna GAA Club , in accepting the Plaque , thanked the Board of Directors , Supervisors & Staff of the Credit Union for their generosity in making such a beautiful presentation to the club & that it was deeply appreciated. Ollie Canning , Captain , speaking on behalf of the players, thanked the Credit Union for the special night of celebration & that it was appreciated by all the players.

Oxgrove Bridge
Councillor Willie Burke was informed this week by Michael Dolly senior engineer at Galway County Council that the €105,000 allocated for the Oxgrove Bridge will be spent on improvement works on the Bridge in the coming months. Mr. Dolly is looking at possibility of widening the Bridge and will be reporting back to the Loughrea councillors at the next area Meeting.

Rhodesian Ridgeback World Congress 2008
The Galway town of Portumna will play host to the 2008 Rhodesian Ridgeback World Congress, which will take place from 12th to 15th August in the Shannon Oaks Hotel and Country Club. Two days of discussions, a Championship Dog Show will follow lectures and talks on the breed. Evening entertainment will include an Ice- Breaker Reception on the first night, an Irish Night and a Gala Banquet on the following two evenings. The Sligo band ‘No Crows’ will provide the music for the Irish Night and the Gala Banquet. The RR World Congress is a four yearly gathering, which, in 2004, took place in Dallas, Texas where the South Fork Ranch of TV fame played host to the Championship Dog Show. The 2012 Congress will be held in Canada. This is the first time a Breed Congress is being held in Ireland and the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Ireland is delighted to be able to offer such a wonderful venue to their delegates. This Portumna hotel is an ideal venue for delegates, their accompanying partners and of course for the dogs, which will be a great part of the occasion. Local leisure activities will be well availed of, including the wonderful walks in the area. Delegates are coming from all corners of the world, New Zealand, Australia, the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, Poland, Slovakia, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, Great Britain and Ireland – north and south. About seventy dogs will accompany delegates and the people of Portumna will have an opportunity to see these wonderful hounds as they are walked round the area. All the animals are show dogs and consequently are very well socialised and behaved. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a noble hound, which carries the characteristics of the Irish Wolfhound, the Afghan Hound, the Bassett Hound and the lovely little Beagle. It is a large dog of light to dark red wheaten colour. There are only a couple of hundred Ridgies in Ireland and the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Ireland is a North / South club. Monsignor Declan Gordon 80th
Monsignor Declan Gordon recently celebrated his 80th Birthday in Hillside Nursing Home, Aughrim. It was a very happy occasion for him his family and friends. The principal celebrant of the mass was Bishop Kirby. The celebrants include Monsignor Declan. After the mass the guests enjoyed refreshments and reminisced over times past. Declan Gordon was ordained in 1952 at the age of 24. He ministered in Ballymacward, in Ballinasloe (both as curate and administrator), in Loughrea as curate, in Portiuncula Hospital for two terms. He was appointed PP of Portumna in 1986. Unfortunately, due to ill health he retired in July 2001. He had been a keen golfer and, even in his illness, he maintained an interest in golfing matters. Monsignor Gordon was thanked for the priestly service he gave to people all over the Diocese of Clonfert.

Soccer Club News
Portumna Town FC is holding an important meeting with parents of children involved with the club on Friday the 25th of August at 8.30pm. At least one parent of each child is required to attend the meeting. Parents of children who are intending to join in August are also requested to attend the meeting. The meeting will be held in the Shannon Oaks hotel and will finish at 9.30pm. Due to matters that arose over the course of last year and recent developments concerning the future of the club it is vital that parents demonstrate their support for the club by attending this meeting.

Lord Mayor Elections
The local Lions Club are running a Lord Mayor Competition over the coming months, the monies raised will go towards the Clubs funds. The 4 people contesting for the position are the outgoing Lord Mayor Mr Donie O Meara local Businessman, Donie has interests in many enterprises in and around Portumna. Mrs Marion Frawley, well known in the area for her acting with the local Players, she is a past President and lady Captain of Portumna Golf Club. Mr Eugene McEntee former Captain of the 2006 All Ireland Club Champions and helps his Father in the family run Butcher Shop on Clonfert Avenue. Finally Ms Aoife Connelly propitor of Stronges Pub on the corner of Brendan Street. We wish them all well and may the best man or woman win the title. The public support is vital so please support, by buying a line, cards in various outlets around the Town. The offical launch was Monday 14th July. A Variety Concert will take place on Sunday November 9th at 3pm in the Shannon Oaks Hotel and the winner will be announced at that event. It is hoped to have local and National Talent playing at the Concert so mark it in your diary.

Irish water safety week will commence from Monday 4th August to Saturday 9th in Lough Derg Lake shore Portumna fom 10am-12pm & 2pm-4pm & 7pm-9pm. Registration on monday 4th August. Qualified IWSA instructors attending. Advanced preperation is recommended open to all.

Blood Clinics
The irish blood Transfusion Board will hold a blood clinic on Wednesday 30th July in the Shannon Oaks Hotel. The clinic times are from 3.00pm to 4.45pm and from 7.00pm to 9.30pm. if you are not a blood donor already please think about coming along.

Calcutta
Joan Mahoney from Gortanumera is going to Calcutta in India for 9 weeks along with 5 other girls, they have one thing in common they all attend Athlone Institute of Technology and are doing courses in Social care. It is nice to hear of somebody doing something different, and that it certainly is. They depart on August 25th and will work in the Loretta Day School which is attached to an Orphanage. In order to get out there they each have to raise €2500-00 and this money goes directly to the school. Joan is organizing a fundraising night in Donie O Meara’s next Saturday night, music is by Jonathan Fallon and his band “Sonic Scene”. There will be a raffle on the night as well, with many of the prizes been donated by local businesses. Joan and her colleagues will hold a 2 day bag packing event over the August Bank Holiday weekend (Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd).

Golf Club Captains Prize
Mr Joe Austin Mens Captain at Portumna Golf Club will host his Captains over the coming weekend every member is asked to honour the day by playing in it. the competition will be held over Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th time sheet in operation. also Joe's Captains prize to the Juniors will take place this coming Thursday from 8.30am (18 holes) and 10am for (9 holes)

Past Captains: Dinner and golf was held last Friday at the Club, it was one of the most successful past Captains in recent years, mainly due to the Hosts Mr Joe Austin and Ms Riona Holohan lady Captain.

Team Results: Portumna has had mixed fortunes with inter club teams last week - The Seniors beat Ballinasloe and now play Tuam in the Connacht Final, The Cecil Ewing lost to Roscommon in a closely fought battle. The Mixed Foresomes are in the Connacht Semi Final and will play Carrick on Shannon at the end of the month this match will be play in Gort. The Daily Mail Team lost to Skerries County Dublin during the week, this was one of the most successful teams to come out of Portumna in recent times, their defeat has left a numbness amongst the members, they won 14 matches on the trot, well done lads for bringing so much pleasure to the members.

Junior Open:Portumna Golf Club will host an 18 hole Junior Competition on Wednesday 6th August, this is open to Boys & Girls under 13, under 15, and under 18, the one criteria is they have to be capable of getting around 18 holes without undue delay. we are also looking for sponsors for this inaugural event.
