Woodford Gun Club
Woodford Gun Club are again holding their annual shoot on the forthcoming bank holiday Monday 4th August. The shoot is rated as one of the leading shoots in the Midlands and western region and draws competitors nationwide from Donegal down to Cork / Waterford. Members of the Irish National Shooting team will be in attendance and this may turn out to be their last warm up for the Beijing Olympics. Record numbers attended last year and the club enjoys the Support of the wider shooting fraternity and the local community. Again , top cash prizes are on offer . Down the line and sporting Traps are available. BBQ facilities managed by Daniel and Rosaleen McMahon available on the day. The area will be signposted leading to the shoot location.

Derelict sites in Portumna
Councillor Willie Burke raised the issue of Derelict sites at the July monthly Meeting of Galway county council. Cllr Burke highlighted the fact that very few were being prosecuted over the last 5 years and towns such as Portumna is been penalised year after year in the tidy towns competition. He went on to add that what was the point in encouraging communities to get involved in tidy towns clean-ups etc if the Council were not going to take action on the Derelict sites.Cllr Burke stated that he reviewed the Portumna tidy towns results for the last 3 years and the Derelict sites have been identified and highlighted in each of the last three years reports. The council and the warden has paid lip service to the issue. He called on the Manager to step in and address the major issue facing the county.

A 5 piece band "Overdue" from Navan will be playing the opening weekend of Treacys Pub in Killimor on Sat 2nd August. (Bank Holiday Weekend, next week.).

Happenings at the Castle
Nationwide at Portumna Castle and Gardens, last Thursday 24th July, Michael Ryan and his team came to Portumna Castle to do a tourism feature on the castle for his programme. He interviewed, Head Guide Ms Heike Gorman on the History of the House and family as the team filmed through the house and gardens, it will be televised on next Friday 1st August on RTE.

Heritage Week 2008
Heritage week runs from 24th to 31st August at Portumna Castle and Gardens. To open Heritage week 2008 at the Castle, the Ouroboros Theatre Company will be performing “Translations” which is widely regarded as Brian Friels theatrical masterpiece, on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August, tickets cost €25 each (programme included). Seating area for 80 people only. Bookings are now being taken at Portumna Castle reception 09097 41658 Payment will be taken each evening before the performance. Cash transactions only accepted. The play will start promptly at 8pm. On Friday 29th at 7.30pm “Frevo Quartet” will be performing music from around the world. Admission is free. Sunday 31st August family fun day at the Castle, something for all members of the family, Medieval dress and Armoury Display, Thatching Demonstartion, 17th Century Boules on the lawn, puppet show and more. Portumna Castle now has 2 Finbanker (6 Pounder) Cannon Guns on display in the formal garden to the North of the Castle. Local craftsmen from the OPW National Monuments Depot, Athenry, have built replica carriages to support them. Local tradition has it that Patrick Sarsfield, left these guns in Portumna Castle after the battle of Aughrim in 1691.

Soccer Registration
Protumna Town FC are holding their Registration Day for players for the 2008/09 season on Saturday August 9th at 11.00am in the Leisure centre of the Shannon Oaks Hotel. Teams from Under 8 to Under 13 will be accomodated this year. Children must have passed their 6th birthday by June 30th of this year to be eligible. ISPCC- Positive Parenting Course

Mike Denver
Mike Denver started performing in 2002 his success has gone from strength to strength. His latest hit single is called “Everyday is a Beautiful Day” and is written by the legendary Shay Healy and John Farry. Shay wrote the winning Eurovision in 1980 for Johnny Logan called "What's Another Year" it has special significance for Shay as it was written to commemorate his father, who had passed away the previous year. Shay met Mike Denver when he was in Galway earlier this year judging a talent competition, Mike asked him to write a hit song for him. It is getting a lot of airplay on local radio stations at the moment so hopefully it will do very well for Mike Denver.

Golf Club
Junior Golf: Congratulations to Junior Golfers- Conor Barry, Jamie Conboy, Eddie Maloney, and Tommy Heagney who have qualified for the junior boys under 13 and under 15 at Rosses Point this week, they went through a qualifying process in Mountbellew 2 weeks ago. Lady Captains prize to the Junior Boys and Girls will take place on Tuesday 5th Aug from 9am. Junior Open on Wednesday 6th from 9am time sheet in operation. ring 09097 41059 ext 2 Junior Foresomes- Portumna reached the final of the Boy's Junior Foresomes in Castlebar Golf Club last Monday, they were beaten in the final by Galway Golf Club who now go on to represent Connacht next month, Portumna won this Competition in 2006, c the team were Shane Ryan, Sean Cleary, Shane McHugo and Cathal O Byrne.

 

Ladies Captains Prize: Riona Holohan's ladies Captains prize will be held on Saturday 9th August. The best of luck to all the competitors. Commiserations to the mixed Foresomes team, and their Captains Mary Conwell and Sean Cahalan, they reached the Connacht Final in Gort last weekend, unfortunately Gort pipped them in the end the result was Gort 3 Portumna 2.
