Fashion Show
Portumna Rugby Club is holding their 3rd annual fashion show on Thursday 23rd October in the Shannon Oaks Hotel and Country Club. The rugby club is extremely excited to announce that this years very special guest is Aoife Kelly, The 2008 International Rose of Tralee. It is a great coup for the club to get Aoife to come along, she is in huge demand, but is taking time out of her busy schedule to come along on the night. The last two years have been a huge success and the club are under pressure to follow these up with another entertaining show, but they are confident that they can provide a wonderful night out, mixing fashion with a ltlle bit of light entertainment including the long awaited debut of Abba-toir. Tickets for the show are available from participating shops and club members. They are very reasonabley priced at €15 and included a cheese and wine reception from 7.30 with the show starting at 8pm.

Senior Hurling
Portumna Senior Hurlers qualified for their sixth successive Senior Hurling Final by virtue of a 3-10 v 0-13 victory over Liam Mellows in Athenry on Sunday last. They now face either Gort or Loughrea in the final, the date of which is to be confirmed. We would encourage all the parish to show their support for the team by decorating their premises with the Club colours.

Congratulations are extended to Joseph Canning on his recent nominations. The first one as an Allstar, the selection of which is shortly, and the second as the" Hurling Personality of the Year" run the Star newspaper, which was presented by the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen. Great honours indeed for a young sportsman. Hopefully he can top it all off with a Senior County medal in the near future.

Rugby Result
Portumna Rugby Club hosted Ballyhaunis in a league game on Sunday and a encouraging crowd were treated to a great game in glorious sunshine, with both teams eager to pass the ball around and play running rugby. The impressive Aidan Doyle scored the first try for Portumna from close in and this was added to by tried from Patrick Cuddy and the ever improving David Campbell. With the win seemingly wrapped up Portumna appeared to take their foot off the pedal and let the visitors back into the game with two late tries. This led to a nervous final few minutes, but Portumna managed to hold on and run out deserving 20-17 winners. Best for a very entertaining Portumna side on the day were David Campbell, Cathal Roche and Mark Headd.

Christmas Marketing Promotion
The local and newly formed Portumna Chamber of Commerce, have come up with a novel idea for the Christmas shopper. The aim is to boost commercial activity in Portumna by encouraging people to spend on goods and services locally in the weeks prior to Christmas. The promotion is a grand prize draw for customers ran in association with the Chamber of Commerce. The way it operates is members give out a raffle ticket to a customer who spends €x amount of money in their premises, that is 1 ticket for each amount spent. The customer fills out the raffle ticket with their contact details and puts it in the members raffle box, which will be in a highly visible location within the store. The retailer will have his/her own inhouse draw in or around the 15th December. The first prize will be the ticket that will go forward for the main draw which will take place the week prior to Christmas. The retailer may have numerous in house prizes also for the runner up spots. The beauty of this draw is there will be only 1 ticket per member retailer in the grand prize draw. I hear you ask what is the 1st Prize, well the Grand Prize draw will take place at the Chamber of Commerce social night on Saturday 20th December 2008, and one lucky shopper will win a prize valued at €2500-00 (cash or travel voucher). It is as important as ever to support local businesses in and around Portumna, so the Chamber have their eye on the ball in trying to encourage shoppers to spend their money in Portumna and therefore help the local economy. The shopper has the chance of winning a nice cash bonus for Christmas so well done to everyone concerned.
