Library - Book Week
Portumna Library Book Festival was another resounding success this year. Activities included Draughts, Jenga and Table Quiz. With the help of some wonderful volunteers workshops were held in glass painting and sponge painting which the children thoroughly enjoyed. As usual Hayley did an excellent job for the Teddy Bear's Picnic. Our Fancy Dress Competition displayed the talent and creativity (and hard work) of local children and their parents. Teresa and Louise would like to thank all those who participated in the Book Festival especially our volunteers, Liz Hussey, Nancy Needham, Nora Mannion, Michelle McCormac, Marie Gibbs, Marie Conneely and Valerie Cunningham. Thanks also to Joe Tierney ( O Haras ) for supplying the buns for the Teddy Bear's Picnic. A date has still to be set for our prize- giving day but we will inform schools when this date is set.

Rugby Club - Fashion show
A large crowd of nearly 300 people supported the Rugby club fashion showlast week and all appeared to enjoy the night out. The International Rose of Tralee 2008, Aoife Kelly, was the very special guest and she was verywell received by the crowd. While the fashion shows are supposed to all about clothes from local retailers, the rugby club always has a sprinkling of fun and this year was no different. A local Abba tribute act called Abbatoir closed the show and while they were undoubtedly great entertainment, I don't think the record deal is too imminent.

County Hurling Final Congratulations
Congratulations to our Senior Hurling team on successfully defending their County crown in Pearse Stadium last Sunday. They showed a desire to win despite appearing in their sixth consecutive final. The players and management deserve tremendous credit for their dedication and it was a fitting finale to a brilliant year, two county titles and an All- Ireland thrown in. Not bad going. The experience of previous seasons eventually told against a sporting Gort team. How fitting it was to see young Martin Dolphin receive the "Man Of THe Match" award for a great performance. The future looks bright. Thanks to all our supporters for their vocal efforts . The season continues this weekend with the expected fixture of our Junior C final against Ballindeeren. Check the GAA listing for details. We wish them every success and hopefully they can make it a double. Your support would be gratefully appreciated.

Archaeological & Historical Talk
Last week the A & H society of South East Galway had their first lecture given by Barry Lally from Ballinasloe the topic was the Trench family of Garbally, it was a very interesting talk on the local branch of the Le Poer Trench family, later Earls of Clancarty. The talk explored the history of the family and their associations with Ballinasloe and East Galway. The next presentation will be on Thursday 27th November in the Shannon Oaks Hotel the theme will be Raifteri an File and the Callanan Poets: their lives, Works and Times by Gerry Cloonan, this is an enthralling and enlightening bilingual presentation by Gerry, detailing the facts and folklore associated with Antoine Ó Raifterí, one of Irelands’s best known Irish language poets of the modern period. Raifterí’s habitually difficult relationship with the neighbouring Callanan brothers of Craughwell-accomplished fili or poets in their own rights-is also sensitively explored in the lecture.

Best for Portumna on the day were Shane McClearn, John Mannion and Mark Headd. Next up for Portumna is a home game against Dunmore in the league, this kicks off at 2.30pm on Sunday next.
