Pride of Place Prize for Portumna
At a ceremony in Cappoquin, Co.Waterford, President Mary Mc Aleese presented the prizes to the winners in the various categories in the national Pride of Place 2008. Portumna, who gave a presentation of the area and town in July to the two visiting judges, is runner up in the Category 5 section ( population between 2000-5000).The Pride of Place Competition recognises and celebrates the vital contributions that community partnerships make to society. The focus is on people coming together to shape, change and enjoy all that is good about their local area. In July, Portumna heard presentations on the Arts in the area, the Youth Activities, the Community Development Project and the Irish Rural Development plans at a whistle-stop tour commencing with the presentations, welcome and refreshments in Sign Out Youth Cafe, where voluntary groups were represented personally with literature and displays. The Retirement Village Bus took the party of judges and local representatives to visit An Gairdin, Acorn to Oak, Portumna Day Care Centre and Castle Gardens with a quick look at the Special Needs Walk in Portumna Forest Park and the new Lifeboat at Portumna's Fire & Rescue Station. At the awards, where Portumna were awarded a crystal trophy and a cheque for €700, President Mc Aleese paid tribute to all the participating groups who work tirelessly to create and promote pride in their cities, towns and villages when people work together to enhance and change parts of their area for the good of the whole community. So Portumna voluntary groups and committee grafters, take a bow- we have been acknowledged as a place of pride and community spirit. Let us continue to build on that - Ní neart go cur le chéile (Unity is strength!)

10th Galway Portumna Cubs hosted the County Cub Quiz in Portumna on Sunday last. While the eventual winners of a very tight and hotly contested quiz were the 14th Galway St Patrick's team, Portumna Cubs put up a very brave fight and won a tie brake round to claim outright second place. The scoring was extremely high by all teams, with only a few questions out of the 100 asked separating the teams at the conclusion. Well done to all who participated. Portumna Calendar 2009
On Thursday last a packed audience enthusiastically received the Portumna Calendar 2009. The 12 months depict pictures of Portumna and area as seen through the eyes of the members of Portumna Camera Club. An additional piece of artistry is provided by matching original pieces of writing from members of Portumna Pen Pushers and Maple Poetry Group. This was an innovative and challenging project and both groups are thrilled with the result. Ollie Canning launched the calendar and as a man who has great pride in his home town and who knows all about team effort , he gave the evening a great start. Mark Conroy, who spoke on behalf of the Camera Club, also presented each photograph on the screen as backdrop to the readings by the writers who were introduced by Noelle Lynskey, Chairperson of Portumna Arts Group and Pen Pusher Co-Ordinator. The packed audience enjoyed the event in the comfort of the Retirement Village Chapel. The calendars are on sale for €10 in many outlets in town and your support is encouraged and welcomed. The calendar will be a great gift for natives living away- a unique way to send a taste of Portumna to a loved one this Christmas. There are a limited number printed so get your copy now!
