Portumna Lord Mayor
Over the summer months and into the Autumn, lines and cards were sold by the 4 Lord Mayor Contestants, it was hard work and well done to all 4. The money raised went to the local Lions Club, in all €11,000 was raised so everyone was a winner. The final outcome was revealed at a Concert held in the Shannon Oaks Hotel on Sunday 7th November, it was a music packed evening with appearences from Matt Keane and the legendary Joe Burke, a local band called “Some Scene” , and many more. The MC for the night was John Joe Conwell, and when all the cards were counted Donie O Meara was declared the winner, and was given his chain of office for another term. It was a credit to all persons involved in the Lions Club, the contestants and the public who bought the tickets.

O'Meara's New Extension
Donie O'Meara came to Portumna from Borrisokane in December 1978, 30 years ago this month. He purchased Leo O Mearas Public house and outhouses and developed them over the coming years, he and his family have left an indelable mark on the business scene in and around the small East Galway Town and it’s surrounding area. In 1979 he married Marie from Cloughjordan and in 1980 the first Centra shop was opened in Portumna. In the late 80s he changed to the Musgarve Supervalu brand and has developed his business around that franchise ever since. Over 3 years ago he decided to carry out a major refurbishment of the shop and the dream comes true on Friday December 5th when the grand opening takes place. The opening will be done by Mike Denver and the well known Conquerors Band, also the Galway Bay Roadcaster will be doing a radio broadcast from the Shop. The O'Meara family are firm believers of supporting local talent and businesses. On that day also in the shop there will be a cookery demonstartion by local chef Duncan West from 3-5pm. Saturday is family entertainment day from 2-4pm, the fun includes Clowns, Fireeaters, Magicians, juggglers and stilt –walkers. Donie has over 60 staff working in his shop, bar and restaurant, he is and always has been a major employer in the Town it is important to support local Irish shops and businesses over the Christmas period and into the future as the money spent locally will help development in the future. To keep Portumna in Business, do your business in Portumna. We wish Donie his family and staff all the best with the new shop.

Tidy Towns
The Tidy Towns Committee is already working on the town’s application for the 2009 competition. Work is also ongoing on the committee’s Three Year Strategic Plan for the town. The local Beaver Group, in conjunction with the Friends of the Forest Park and Portumna Tidy Towns, had a busy evening recently, planting bluebell bulbs in the Forest Park. A work plan is now being drawn up for the woodland area beside Portumna Priory with a view to enhancing this woodland area and increasing its environmental value. This project will be in close liaison with the OPW. The Bring Bank Centre behind the Library will undergo a face-lift in 2009. In order to keep this facility working freely, we would ask that users of the clothes bank remove clothes from bags before putting them into the clothes bank. This will allow for the clothes to disperse and will prevent the shoot from getting clogged. Thanks to everyone for their efforts in ensuring that Portumna always looks its best.
