Portumna Scouts - Six New Cubs
10th Galway Portumna Cubs have had a very busy weekend, having the investiture of six new Cubs on Friday night last, 12th December, and then their Christmas outing on Sunday, when cubs had a very enjoyable ice skating session in Galway. Cub leaders were delighted to invest six new Cubs on Friday last when Deirdre Eames, Ellie Harwood, Daniella Hoary, Saoirse Mullen, Oisin Donoghue & Denis McLaughlin took the Cub Scout Promise at a ceremony at the newly refurbished Scout Den. This very special occasion was attended by the families of the new Cubs with the older Cubs being instrumental in planning and partaking in the ceremony. The Cubs then entertained all present with a very special rendition of a christmas song. All other Cubs were also presented with their Centenary Challenge Badges, which they earned by completing a midnight combined 100km hike in Portumna Forest Park during the summer. This special badge to celebrate 100 years of Scouting in Ireland can be worn for life by all who earn same. It was then off to Galway on Sunday morning for Cubs to show off their Ice Skating skills. To great encouragement from all the parents who accompanied the Cubs and leaders the Cubs skated their hearts out for the duration.

O'Meara's SuperValu Official Opening
The official opening took place on last Friday at 11.30am. The premises was blessed by Fr Brendan Lawless, Parish Priest of Portumna, Rev Alan Nevin, Rector of Portumna and Eyrecourt, Mrs Anne Menheneott, diocesan reader. After the blessing the tape was cut by hurling star Joe Canning. In his address Donie reminisced on how he was in the retail business in the first place, it all began with 5 German fishermen coming into his bar looking for Irish Coffees., he went up the town looking for fresh cream, but there was none to be had, so he had to make do without the cream. It was at that point he decided to open a shop and as they say the rest is history. On Saturday Donie had a fun day for children and their families, he had Stilt Walkers, Fire Eaters, Santa, and a load of Disney Characters including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Mini Mouse. John Muldoon Connacht Rugby Captain was there to meet the customers and do the in house draw for iPods, Nintendos etc. Donie has invested €8 million in the new shop and employs over 80 people. Down the years he has given employement to a large number of families in the locality, so it is to be hoped that Donie will get the support that he so richly deserves from all of the people in the surrounding district. We wish Donie, Marie and the family health, happiness and prosperity in the years to come.
