Salthill-Knocknacarra have appointed former Portumna hurling manager, Jimmy Heverin, as manager of the club’s Senior Football team. Heverin, who played with Salthill in the 1980s, will take over from outgoing senior manager PJ Kelly after Christmas and his backroom team will be put in place in the coming weeks. The appointment of Heverin – a high-profile, well-respected Galway GAA figure who twice successfully steered Portumna to All-Ireland final success in 2006 and 2008 – will provide a welcome boost to the city club.

Ballet
A memorable night was held in the town Hall last Friday 19th December with a beautiful performance from the all pupils of Cassandra Kenny's School of Ballet. There were ballerinas ranging from 3 to 17 years old. The night incorporated all class and exam work which the pupils have been preparing over the past weeks. To all the parents, family and friends a big thank you for your support throughout the year and on the night. All funds raised on the night will go towards the painting of the big hall early in 2009.

Portumna Christmas Draw
The recently formed Portumna Junior Chamber did not let the grass grow under their feet this year, their main aim this Christmas and hopefully into 2009 is to keep as much business in the community as possible and encourage people to shop at home. The Shop and Win promotion went down very well, with over 40 local businesses taking part in the scheme. The winner was local woman Mary Jo Kelly who lives in Abbey Street, the ticket was drawn in Duddy’s Pharmacy, and with all the other winners from each business her name was drawn out of the hat. The draw took place in the Shannon Oaks Hotel on Sunday 21st at 9pm, Mr Timmy Walsh in his addresss hoped that this draw encouraged customers to shop at home and that a similar draw will run again next year. Speaking to retailers on the night , the promotion was a success and locals did stay at home to shop this year.

Christmas Day Swim
The annual Christmas Day venture into the river Shannon by eager swimmers of all ages and genders before they tuck into their Turkey dinner was as usual a wonderful spectacle to behold. A The swim got underway at 12noon and was open to all ages. Over 40 swimmers took to the freezing water, raising thousands of euro for 4 local Charities. Local people were encouraged to attend and watch the swim, and as usual they contributed very generously to the Lions Club collection boxes. A number of years ago the money went towards a new state of the art Lifeboat, this is now in service and is there on standby every year since. The Lord Mayor Donie O Meara lead the swimmers out onto the pier, he has done this for many years, this year Donie dressed in a Banana Man outfit, and brought a fun element to the day.
