Alan Frawley
Alan Frawley is the son of Daithi and Marian Frawley St, Bridget’s Road Portumna, he has commenced working in a private hospital in Darlington since 1st December. He received his degree in B.Sc. in Physiotherapy after studying for 3 years in Teeside University, Middlesbrough, UK - spent 2 years previously in Carlow IT got Diploma there which prepared the way and allowed him to apply for UK university. Two years ago Alan went to Neapl as a volunteer and offered his services to two Hospitals there, in order to get there he had to raise €10,000. The first was a Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre for disabled Children (HRDC) this is the only Hospital of its kind in Nepal, HRDC takes in children from all over the country. Many have been born with Polio or had accidents that have not been treated correctly- all physical disabilities. These children face many different such as orthopedic conditions, TB, Polio, post-burn contractures and cerebral palsy. The second is Royal Nepal Orthopedic Hospital. This was set up to provide the medical care in the field of trauma, orthopedics and rehabilitation, to Nepalese people who cannot receive these services through the standard government-run Hospitals because of overcrowding. Alan did most of his voluntary work situated in the HRDC, treating children with Cerebral Palsy The money Alan and his family raised went towards flights to and from Nepal and his accommodation for a month, the balance was handed over to the Hospitals. It was by all accounts an eye opening experience for Alan and I am sure it will benefit him in his medical career, and for the rest of his life.
