Portumna Town FC News
Portumna Under 13s welcomed Portlaoise for this league game. If ever there was game of two halves this was it. Portumna deservedly went in at half time 1 nil down. Bearing in mind that Portlaoise have been struggling at the bottom of the league we made them look very accomplished. After a bit of confusion in the first 5 minutes of the second half - with Niall Royston pulling off a great save from close range - Portumna totally dominated with some scintillating passing and flowing football. Colin Burke was awesome, scoring 4 goals. Ronan O Meara also scored whilst Simon Curran came close. Portumna ran out comfortable 5-1 winners and every one of the Portumna players and subs gave a great performance in the second half, responding well to the managers’ words. Colin Burke got man of the match.

Fixtures for this Saturday: 17/01/09 Portumna U12 are at home to Killavilla, kick-off is at 10.00a.m. Whilst the U13s are also at home to Abbeyleix at 11.15.

Our Local Hero
Many people do things in their lives that may go unnoticed and its only after they are no longer with us that we say why were their efforts not recognized in their lifetime, so with that in mind we wish to acknowledge the efforts of Ann Touhy, our local hero. Our tall strong girl who makes things happen, keeps us safe ,and has an infectious smile, who endears herself to young and old native and visitor. This special person is a member of our voluntary fire service, and mans both fire and water safety services. She is an accomplished swimmer, canoeist, orienteerist, she has a passionate love for wildlife and care of the environment, and uses all these skills to enlighten both adults and children. Every Christmas day she leads the swim in the freezing waters of Lough Derg and is always last out ensuring all the swimmers are safely accounted for. The money raised has benefitted numerous associations, projects and needy causes within the local community. She is an active member of “Friends of Portumna Forest” and has been committed to helping young people enjoy and learn to care for the environment and to provide access to all through provision of suitably serviced paths. The Lions club and Vincent de Paul are also very much part of Ann’s life, she is always sensitive of others needs. The Day Care centre for the elderly often finds Ann helping out so there is hardly a person who does not know ‘Our Ann’.

Portumna Community School News
Half Way There: Welcome back to Portumna Community School for the new year. While we are now at the end of our first week it is worth noting that this is almost the halfway point in the school year!! For Leaving Certs the CAO deadline is rapidly approaching (1st February) and for all exam classes the ‘Mocks’ are just a few weeks away (Monday, 23rd Feb.). It is a very good time therefore to do a little re-assessment of attitudes and practices with regard to study and homework. The most important piece of advice in this area is to establish a sensible routine which you should then try to adhere to as far as possible. Obviously there are times when this will be difficult but for the next few months it is essential that study and exam preparation is a priority. Remember also, there is plenty of advice, support and help available in school – so don’t be afraid to ask!

St. Vincent De Paul Food Appeal: Before Christmas a large trolley was placed in the Social Area and, even though very short notice was given about the Food Appeal, the staff and students responded immediately and generously supported this worthy cause by donating a lot of non-perishable food items. Our ‘hamper’, enough to fill four supermarket trolleys, was collected on Tuesday, 23rd December. A member of the local SVP contacted us during the week wishing to express the gratitude of the society for the very generous food hamper and asked us to thank everyone who donated food - most of which has already been distributed.

School Credit Union: The School Credit Union will commence operations next Friday (16th January). This sub-office of the Credit Union will be staffed by trained students from the T.Y. class and overseen by a member of the Portumna Credit Union. The School Credit Union will be open in the Social Area from 1.25 pm to 1.55 pm every Friday from 16th Jan. to the end of May. Please note that fabulous prizes will be on offer to students who are regular savers. So don’t forget to bring your money and Pass book each Friday.
