Health Forum Courses
Na Calai CDP's Health Forum and Portumna's Mental Health Association in partnership with Portumna's Mental Health Services are currently taking names for the following community courses:

a. Dealing with Stress: This course explores effective ways of dealing with stress and how it affects us. It will run over 6 to 8 sessions (12 to 16 hours) on Tuesdays from 7.30 pm - 9.30pm commencing on February 24th, 2009 (provisional start date). Venue: Na Calai CDP, Portumna.

b. Parenting: This course aims to develop good communication with your child. Topics could include talking to your child about sex or dealing with conflict. It will run over 6 sessions (12 hours) on Tuesdays from 10.30am - 12.30 pm commencing on February 24th, 2009 (provisional start date). Venue: The Heritage Centre, Killimor.

Phone Book
Three Portumna Community School T.Y. students (Anna Maria Lagana, Amanda Gohery & Cassandra Dervan) have completed their TY Business project by producing a local phone directory of all the businesses around Portumna, Killimor and Tynagh. The book will go on sale next week in the following shops in Portumna - Kittys and Salmons. Both on Patrick Street The cost will be €5 per book. The students would like to thank Mrs.Kathleen Cahalan for all the help she gave them in producing the phone book and also to all of the businesses who contributed.


Portumna Athletics Club
Portumna AC are holding their AGM next Friday @ 8.30 in the Town Hall. Anyone interested in Athletics at any level should attend this meeting. Athletics is the cornerstone of all sports and a strong Athletic Club will benifit all sporting organisations in the community. Portumna AC held its second club run, brigth and early on Saturday morning, this time a 6 kilometer trail run.The ice and snow ment the underfoot conditions were tricky but that did not deter any of the hardy runners, well done to all who competed There will be similar runs throughout the year.Portumna AC athletes will be racing in the Maree 8K next Sunday at 1.00. Ladies group are meeting on Tuesday and Thursday, Beginners at 7.15 and the regulars at 8.00 Any one interested can Contact Margret @ 0871237824. Portumna G.A.A. News
Lotto Numbers The numbers drawn 2, 3, 7, 8 no winner. Three match 3 numbers Leanne Fahy, Derrick Frawley and Patricia Mitchell. Next week Jackpot $2,400 Juvenile Development Fund.

The GAA club are selling tickets at the moment for their Juvenile Development Fund Tickets are available from any of the committee. 1st Prize VW Polo plus other prizes. Tickets €50.00. Your support is much appreciated.

All Ireland Club Semi-Final: The match everyone is talking about is the Portumna verses Ballyhale Shamrocks showdown in Thurles on the 22nd Feburary 2009 at 2.30 pm. The club is hoping that as many businesses as possible will show their support by decorating their premises or homes with flags, buntings or other items, also make sure to be at the match as these 2 teams have won the Club All-Ireland Hurling final for the past 4 years. Good Luck to Management and Panel.

New Publication
A new book on the Folklore of the 24 individual parishes of the diocese will be published soon. Containing 300 never before seen images of old churches, large gatherings for confirmations etc in Portumna and elsewhere. Also containing old ghost stories, local tales of the famine, the night of the big wind etc. Limited print. For further details contact the author Rev Declan Kelly 091-841758. Pilgrimage to Lourdes

Valentine's Ball
Preparations for the Sex and the City Valentine's ball fundraiser are nearly complete and demand for tickets has got everybody buzzing with excitement. The committee would like to highlight the fact that due to the nature of this show and the pre planning required that even if there are some tickets left over they will unfortunately not be available at the door on the night. The latest addition to the super prizes is a third designer hand bag by "Guess".The committee would also like to thank all those people who have given their support to this event and in particular the hard working duo of Ann Marie Barry and Maureen Curran.


Positive Communications and Effective Life Skills Course
A Way Of Life: A course in the Power of positive communications and effective life skills will commence on Monday 16th February at 7.30pm to 9.30pm at the Portumna Retirement Village, social centre, for further information, email or phone Marguerite at 0863454205.


Galway Hospice Table Quiz
The Galway Hospice Home care service which has been in operation since 1990, currently provides in the region of 4,000 "Hospice at Home" visits every year throughout County Galway, including the Aran Islands Mrs Kathleen O Brien and her family and friends have been raising money for the Hospice foundation for many years, thia year will be no exception, she is holding a Table Quiz in aid of Galway Hospice Home Care Team in Stronges on Wed 18th Feb @ 9pm.Support appreciated for this very worthy cause,if anyone used their services over the past number of years they will understand the valuable service that they provide without any funding from government sources. All money is raised by voluntary contributions such as this fund raiser, so come along and support.
