Congratulations - 100 Years Old
Congratulations to Kitty Horan, formerly of Portumna, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Her daughter-in-law, Kathleen, granddaughter, Regina, and members of her extended family marked the occasion with a special party at Aras Deirbhle nursing home in Belmullet, Co Mayo, where Kitty resides. Fr Kevin Hegarty celebrated Mass in her honour and gave a heartfelt tribute. Kitty was the eldest of five children, born to Catherine and James Mitchell, in Ahascragh, Ballinasloe, on 24 February 1909. She lost her mother as a young child and took on the responsibility of helping her father rear her four siblings. She later spent many years working in Dublin, before returning to her native Galway and settling in Portumna, where she met her future husband Mattie Horan, now deceased for 27 years. Kitty later gave birth to her only son, Brian. She saw life at its best and at its worst, from both an historical and a personal perspective. After Brian tragically lost his battle with cancer in July 2001, her indomitable spirit shone brightly as her unbounded courage and determination helped her keep an enthusiasm for life. Throughout her adult life, she achieved an admirable balance in acquiring a healthy mix of family, work and recreational duties. We would like to wish her all the best for her future days.
