South East Galway Archaeological and Historical Society
South East Galway Archaeological and Historical Society are hosting a talk on 'The Lost Birds of Ireland' by Gordon D'Arcy in the Shannon Oaks Hotel, Portumna on next Thursday March 26th at 8.30pm. The subject matter of this lecture might seem to be a strange choice for an archaeological and historical society. However, familiarisation with the history of the natural environment within which we live is vitally important to our understanding of the past. Gordon's lecture is concerned with the disappearance of a number of once-familiar Irish Birds. The book upon which it based was prompted initially by the realisation that we have lost some of the largest and most spectacular European birds such as the Capercaillie and the Crane and that we now support only half our original quota of birds of prey. The alarming decline in the Corncrake in recent years illustrates the on-going nature of the problem. Gordon has kindly agreed to bring copies of his book for sale on the night.

All-Ireland Senior A Colleges Camogie Final
St Brigid's Callan 1-11 Portumna 1-06: In the All-Ireland senior A colleges final at Drom & Inch, St Brigid's Callan retained the title with a hard-fought 1-11 to 1-6 win over Portumna. A personal total of 1-9 from outstanding centre forward Denise Gaule proved crucial. Credit to Portumna though, who went in at the break 0-5 to 0-3 ahead, and while they remained in contention into the second half, the Kilkenny side aided by a strong breeze took over in the final quarter.

Portumna Players - Stags and Hens
The Portumna staged Willy Russell's Stags and Hens play over the weekend, it played to packed houses on the 3 nights. The play was updated to the present time and the setting is a Liverpool nightclub - complete with dodgy lights, smoky rooms and drunken revellers. A stag do is in full swing and following a curry - the lads decide to hit the club. The only problem is the girls are in the same dive. Marian Frawley directed the play, she introduced 5 new members to the stage, Marie O Donnell, Michael Goode, Fergal Coughlan, Tommy Madden, and Tory Nicholson. And they were all excellent. Well done to everyone concerned with the production.
