Cuirt festival and Noelle Lynskey
The 2009 Cuirt Festival Over The Edge showcase reading takes place at the Town Hall Theatre, Galway on Thursday, April 23rd, 11am. The five featured authors this year are Orla Higgins, Noelle Lynskey, Noel Harrington, Jenny McCudden and Val Nolan. Noelle Lynskey is from Roscommon, but now lives in Portumna. She is facilitator of Portumna Pen Pushers and The Maple Poetry Group. She is also an active participant in BAFFLE, Loughrea. While juggling the joys of mothering, her duties as a Community Pharmacist and organising Arts Events in Portumna, Noelle is working towards a collection of poetry. Previous publications include Cuirt, West 47, Crannog, Glance, Scriobh and Maple Leaves. Noelle was a Featured Reader, as part of the Maple Poetry Group, at the May 2005 Over The Edge: Open Reading in Galway City Library.


Portumna Youth Theatre
The first production of PYT will take place on Sunday, Sept 19th at 8.30pm in Portumna Town Hall. The production "The Street"-An Invasion of Privacy is a production written by the members of Portumna's Youth Theatre under the direction of Fergal Darcy, the well known award winning radio presenter with i102104 radio. The young people involved range in age from 12-17 , have met each Wednesday for workshops and are full of enthusiasm and energy for their first production. For many of these young people it is their first time to appear on stage. Please support the local group and come along. Admission is €5 and the profits will be used for further PYT workshops. Interested young people aged 12-18 are invited to apply to the Youth Theatre for September. Ask any of the adult leaders at the show on 19th or look out for notices in the area later in the summer.


Portumna Social Services Silver Circle Draw
The Silver Circle Draw - In aid of the day care centre will take place over the next few weeks. The money collected forms an essential part of the day to day running of the centre. We could not manage without it. Please support. Plans are afoot to extend the day room in the centre this year and many fund raising activities are planned. The committee asks for your support. The centre is much enjoyed by our senior citizens, one day we may all appreciate the service it provides.

10th Galway Portumna Cubs
Well done to Portumna Cubs who spent the weekend at the Shrahan Scout Centre in the heart of the Slieve Blooms. After the opening ceremony and communal meal on Friday Night, the cubs went on a torch lit night hike on the side of Arderin, the highest peak of the Slieve Blooms. This was followed by hot chocolate and lots of fun, music and games. Saturday morning started very early with a full Irish breakfast prepared by cub leaders. All cubs then successfully completed the challenging Glenkitt valley hike, traversing some of the most remote parts of the Slieve Blooms. Congratulations in particular to Oisin Donoghue, Deirdre Eames and Saoirse Mulllen on completing their first overnight in cubs. At the closing ceremony the cubs thanked their leaders for giving of their time to organise the weekend. A great time was had by all.


Portumna Tidy Towns
April is Spring Clean month. Portumna Tidy Towns Committee wish to thank everyone who has entered into the spirit of the month by tidying around their own properties. Please keep up the good work and for those who haven't started yet, the month is young. All those who are interested in keeping Portumna tidy, please contact a member of the Tidy Towns committee.


Killimor Community Games
Killimor Community Games recently completed all the winter section of the games. Over 140 children took part at area and 80 at county level. We got 2 silver and 2 bronze medals in model making, 1 bronze in art, silver medals in U.15 & U.13 indoor soccer girls, silver medals in Draughts U.14 & U.12, silver in group modern dance, 1 bronze in solo music and 1 qualifier to the National Games in Athlone in Cross Country. We would like to thank all the children who came and took part in all the events and hope that you enjoyed it. Thanks to all the coaches, supervisors and coordinators of the events and parents who brought their children to participate in these events. We would also like to thank Killimor and Tiernascragh for the use of there facilities, Duffy's for the meeting room and the Coen Family of the Little Chipper Killimor for sponsorship of a set of jerseys. We look forward to seeing you all participate in our summer events. Our Sports day will be held on Saturday 25th April in Killimor Hurling pitch. Portumna GAA Notes
Portumna Under 21 Hurlers opened their 2009 campaign with a convincing victory over Turloughmore on Friday evening. The Seniors had a good league win over Sarsfields in Portumna. Not to be outdone, the Junior A's also continued the winning sequence with a win over Gort.

Lotto Numbers for Saturday April 4th 2009 were 4,5,24 and 28. There was no winner and two Match 3's receive €50 each-Gerard Keane and Jennifer Maguire.

Plans are being put in place for La nag Club and a victory celebration for our title-winning teams of 2008/2009 shortly.

Clean Up: This coming Easter Saturday morning from 9am to 12noon there will be a Spring Clean of the GAA Club House and dressing rooms. All club members, non members, supporters and anyone that might like to join in are welcome to come along. All you need to bring is a pair of rubber gloves. The club house was recently built to the highest spec and to keep it in good condition your support for this clean up is vital. For further information contact Walter Burke on 087 8267054.

Celebration Dance: Portumna Hurlers celebration Dance in the Shannon Oaks hotel on Easter Sunday Night 12th April dancing to the fabulous Conquerors, starts at 11.30pm to 1.30pm small admission charge of €10.

Table Quiz Monster Charity Quiz In the Shannon Oaks hotel, Portumna on Good Friday night 10th April at 9pm. In aid of Autism & Crumlin children's hospital. Please support. The organizers are hoping for a good turnout.


Portumna Castle & Gardens 2009
Portumna Castle & Gardens will be open for the 2009 summer season from Thursday April 9th to September 30th. The 17th Century Walled Kitchen Garden, planted with fruit, vegetables and flowers is just beginning to bloom and is a peaceful and colourful garden to take time out in. The ground floor of the castle houses an exhibition of the history of the castle and the De Burgo Family. Guided tours are FREE with admission ticket (subject to availability of guides). A guide will bring you through the gardens and ground floor of the Castle and tell you the historical facts along with a few stories from local folklore. Taking approximately 35 minutes per Tour it is a recommended way of experiencing the site. For Families and School groups we have a Historical Quest, which you can follow throughout the Castle and Gardens. The reward being, a fun way of learning while looking for clues, at no extra cost. Admission Charges: Adults €3, Senior Citizen/Group €2, Child/Student €1 & Family €8. All schools have free admissions. Pre booking essential for groups. Opening Arrangements: 10am to 6pm Daily. Last admission 5.15pm.

Expected Addition this season: We are awaiting the welcome return of Fury. The bones of the much loved dog Fury will be returning to Portumna Castle during the 2009 season. We know him to be much loved because of the tablet commemorating him on the porch to the south side of the castle which reads: Dying about April 20 1797 aged 11 year was Interred near this place. Alas poor Fury. She was a dog. Take her for All in All Eye shall not look upon her like again. Visit the castle over Easter Weekend and hopefully see the return of Fury. Or ask the Guides and they will tell you the story of why Fury was so special.

Tea Dance in Portumna Town Hall
The Town Hall Committee are running a Tea Dance on Sunday 17th May from 5pm to 8pm in the Town Hall. The event could become a regular feature depending on how this one goes. The funds will go towards refurbishing the Town Hall. The committee will have more details nearer the time.


New Auctioneer - Property Partners O'Toole
One of East Galway's leading auctioneering firms Property Partners O'Toole in Portumna has announced change of Directors. The company, which was set up in 1997 by Ger O'Toole, has been taken over by Mr. Enda Burke. Mr. Enda Burke who comes from a farming background, originally from Ganaveen, Laurencetown Ballinasloe, County Galway. Having graduated from Galway RTC with a Diploma in Property Management in 1996, Enda then immediately commenced as Residental Negotiator with Dublin firm Hooke and MacDonald where he progressed to become Associate Director of the Company in 2005.
