Christmas Day Swim
It seems a long way away again, as we head into the summer, the money has been collected and given to the nominated charities. The 4 were Lions club, Camogie Club, Tidy Towns and Ability West, all of these are deserving cases. Top of the list was Ability West they received €3,303, next was the Lions Club with €1000, and the Camogie club and the Tidy Towns both received €700 The swim has become a meeting place for returning visitors, they meet the same friends each year, the event has been running about 16 years now and long may it continue. Also a word of thanks to Ann Touhy, Ruth Carty, the local Firebrigade and the Red Cross and everyone who collects money on the day or who helps out in other ways, keep it up.


Health Forum
Na Calaí CDP’s Health Forum and Portumna’s Mental Health Association in partnership with Portumna’s Mental Health Services - May’s Events:

Wednesday the 6th of May - Input from John Fitzmaurice from Jigsaw - a new mental health support service for young people in Galway City and County in Alor Starr, St. Brendan's Road, Portumna, at 7.30p.m.

Wednesday the 13th of May - Input from Nicola Morley from Mental Health Ireland Galway on “Promoting Positive Mental Health” in Alor Starr, St. Brendan's Road, Portumna, at 7.30p.m.

The next meeting of the Portumna and District Health Forum and the Portumna Mental Health Association will take place on: Tuesday the 19th of May at 4pm in the Na Calaí CDP Office on Abbey Street, Portumna. Friends in Low Places: The Garth Brooks Experience
The highly successful eight piece tribute band comes to the Shannon Oaks Hotel & Country Club on Saturday 16th May. They will perform the 'Ultimate Hits' of the record-breaking superstar with favourites such as 'If tomorrow never comes' and 'The Dance'. Fans will be thrilled with the uncanny resemblance and vocal ability of Trevor Smith, aka 'Garth', with a high energy show that recreates the magic of the era.


Pride of Place Draw
Portumna achieved the runner up position in Category 5 at the 2008 Pride of Place Award Ceremony held in Waterford last November. The presentation of this award was made to the group recently by Mayor Peter Feeney in Na Calaí CDP. At that event, those present decided to conduct a draw, and choose one group as the winner of the balance of the prize monies. This Pride of Place draw will take place on Wednesday the 6th of May at 6pm in Na Calaí CDP. The list of groups who will be entered in this draw can be obtained from Na Calaí CDP.


An Gairdin
Salad Production 6th May 10.00am - 4.30pm This course is designed for those who wish to grow salad crops for one's own use or for commercial purposes. It covers a large range of salad crops. The topics include - seed varieties, propagation, spacing, tending, rotations, diseases etc. It covers outdoor and indoor production. Cost: €40.


Community Games
Portumna Community Games will be held on Saturday May 2nd in the hurling field. Registration at 1pm . First events will start at 1.45. There will be competitions for boys and girls including sprints, middle distance races, field events and long puck. Age groups from Under 6s to Under 17s are catered for. Come On and enjoy a good day out.


Portumna Arts Group
On Wednesday, May 6th, Portumna Arts Group will hold an important meeting in Na Calai at 8.30pm. The main item on the agenda is the second Shorelines Arts Festival due to take place in September. Any member of the group or the public, with ideas and a helping hand, are all welcome to attend.


May Day Launch of Sign Out Youth Cafe
Portumna Sign Out Youth Company in partnership with Co Galway VEC invite you to the official launch of the Sign Out Youth Cafe Project on Friday 1st May at 6.30pm. The launch committee have been busy all week finalising arrangements for the community celebration that this project represents. Joe Mc Donagh CEO Co Galway VEC, along with 3 members of the youth committee, Ailish O Toole, Peter Donoghue and Michael Ward will perform the opening ceremony. An open invitation is given and all are welcome to attend the opening which will be followed by light refreshments with music provided by local youth bands.

‘Sign Out’ Youth Project was set up as a direct result to a questionnaire, 80% of the public who responded to the questionnaire highlighted the lack of youth facilities. Sign Out Youth Cafe caters for the young people within our community as a place where they can meet up with their friends, play pool, listen to music in a safe, secure, fully supervised environment. Sign Out is open every Friday evening from 7pm to 9.30pm as a drop in facility for 15 to 19 year olds, plans are in place for extended opening hours.

Portumna Tidy Towns
Portumna Tidy Towns were the grateful recipients of a cheque for €700 from the Christmas Day Swim Committee this week. Sincere thank you to the swim committee and to everyone who donated money and swam on the Day.

A big thank you to everyone who partook in the National Tidy Towns Spring Clean month. To those who tidied, picked up litter, took out their paint brushes well done and keep up the good work during the summer months. In conjunction with Galway County Council, and as part of an Anti Litter Awareness initiative, members of the committee distributed "re-usable shopping bags" to shops in Portumna to give to their customers. They were also on duty in O'Meara's SuperValu over the weekend, distributing these bags and car stickers promoting a cleaner environment.


GHIHS Conference
The Group for the Study of Irish Historic Settlement in conjunction with South East Galway Archaeological and Historical Society are holding their annual conference in the Shannon Oaks Hotel Portumna on the weekend of the 8th to 10th of May. This year's conference focuses on various aspects of the historic landscape of East Galway. Open Day at Emerald Star
Emerald Star line came to Portumna in 1970, at that time Boating on the Shannon was limited to people who owned their own cruisers. With the arrival Emerald Star Portumna saw an influx of foreign visitors, mostly Continental. Since then there has been a lot of changes, cruising has become more accessable and the Shannon has got busier. On May 9th and 10th Saturday and Sunday Emerald Star are having an Open Day from 10.30am to 4.30pm you can go on short trips on Lough Derg or the River Shannon depending on the weather, so you are invited to come along and see for yourself what it is like to Captain your own boat. Portumna GAA Notes
Congratulations to Leo Smith, who has been chosen as Captain of the Senior Hurlers for 2009. His first outing as Captain will be against Athenry in the County Senior Hurling Championship this weekend.

Sean Canning has been chosen by the Club as its Unsung Hero and a presentation will be made to him in Loughgeorge by the Galway County Board on Saturday night next as part of the County’s 125 year GAA celebrations.

Lotto Numbers for Saturday April 25th 2009 were 15, 17, 23 & 24. There was no winner and one Match 3 winner, Seamus Hayes receives €100. Next Week’s Jackpot will be €3500. All Annual Lotto subscriptions are now due for renewal.

Plans are in place for Lá na gClub on Sunday May 10th as part of the GAA’s 125th anniversary celebrations. Proceedings will begin with an outdoor Mass in the field at 2.00 in the afternoon, followed by an under-10 mixed blitz, Skills competitions for the older juveniles and a mixed Hurling cum Football game for adult teams. Light refreshments will be served and a music session will also form part of the day’s programme. There will also be a photographic display of teams. Everyone will be welcome to come and join with the club members on this day of celebration.

The presentation of medals for the AIB All-Ireland Senior Club Championship, The Galway Senior Championship & League, U-21B and Junior C Championships and the County Camogie winners will take place in The Shannon Oaks Hotel on Sunday Night, May 31st 2009. Proceedings will begin @ 8.00 pm and a great night is assured.


Active Retirement Group
Active Retirement Portumna and District Active Retirement Association are celebrating “Bealtaine Festival” with an Art and Craft exhibition, variety show and a social music by Pat and Richie in the Portumna Retirement Village social centre on Tuesday 5th May @ 7.30pm, this retirement group are indeed very active. New members are always welcome.


Portumna Junior Golf

Ability West Golf Classic
The annual Ability West Golf Classic is on Thursday 7th, Friday 8th and Saturday 9th May, teams €140. Presentation to winners on Saturday evening, Bar-B-Q and Elvis live on stage. Please support.
