Portumna G.A.A. Notes
There was little club activity this week as Galway face into the Leinster Hurling Championship next Sunday in Portlaoise versus Laois. Good luck to Ollie Canning and his colleagues and management in this new adventure.

The Junior ‘A’ Hurlers started their championship campaign with an exciting draw against St. Thomas on Sunday last.

Lotto Numbers for Saturday May 23rd 2009 were 2, 5, 24 & 25. There was no Jackpot winner and no Match 3. A donation will be made to Portumna Social Services & St. Dympna’s. Next week’s Jackpot will be €3900.

The presentation of medals for the AIB All-Ireland Senior Club Championship, The Galway Senior Championship & League, U-21B and Junior C Championships and the County Camogie winners will take place in The Shannon Oaks Hotel on next Sunday Night, May 31st 2009. Music is by The Showband Show and proceedings will begin @ 8.00 pm sharp. Nicky Brennan, Iar-Uachtaran CLG will be in attendance. All are welcome and a great night is assured.

It’s exam time and Portumna GAA wish everyone from the club sitting exams over the next few weeks a successful outcome to their endeavors.

Joe Canning - Ambassador. The 2009 Bord Gáis Energy GAA Hurling U-21 All-Ireland Championship was launched at Croke Park on Monday. At the launch, the competition sponsors unveiled a team of six ambassadors who will support an array of activity planned for the season ahead to promote hurling and the U-21 Championship. The Bord Gáis Energy ambassadors are Portumna star Joe Canning (Galway), Ritchie Hogan (Kilkenny), Liam Rushe (Dublin), Patrick Horgan (Cork), Seamus Callinan (Tipperary) and Arron Graffin (Antrim). As Bord Gáis Energy ambassadors, they will be involved in a number of initiatives to be announced over the coming months, including the development of a hurling skills poster aimed at teaching children the basic skills of hurling and ambassador training sessions with under age teams across the country.

Workhouse Project - Public Meeting
There was a good turnout at the public meeting on the Portumna Workhouse Project held on Tuesday, 19th May in the Shannon Oaks Hotel, Portumna. Mick Fogarty, Chairperson of South East Galway Integrated Rural Development Ltd., who have been looking after the Redevelopment Project, addressed the meeting. He stated that the Workhouse complex is owned by the Health Service Executive and now that the HSE has provided the terms of the lease agreement, it was time to ask more people to help with the Project. This was the main purpose of the meeting and a number of people signed up to help on the various working groups. This is a significant project for Portumna and the South East Galway area and while the scale of the complex presents a challenge, the redevelopment of the Workhouse also presents a big opportunity for the area, with plans to include enterprise and community space, holiday accommodation, independent living units for elderly people and heritage areas. Ursula Mooney, Manager of SE Galway IRD, gave an update on the Project. Conservation work carried out to date includes a bat survey, the removal of ivy, the re-roofing of three buildings and conservation work on some of the windows. The development of a Masterplan had input from the local community and a wide number of organisations. The Masterplan which provides a basic template for the redevelopment of the complex is subject to change depending on circumstances and opportunities that may arise. Anybody who was unable to attend the public meeting but who would like to help out with the Project, can contact Ursula at the IRD office: 090-9741867.
