Artistic Cycling
Congratulations to Alisa Fitzpatrick who represented Ireland in the singles artistic cycling in the European Junior Championships in Holland two weeks ago. Alisa is the eldest daughter of Danny Fitzpatrick, formerly from Portumna. She is 15 years of age and was born in Rosenheim south east of Munich, Germany. She has being doing artistic cycling for the last 5 to 6 years. She has one sister, Celina aged 13, who also participates in this sport. She has recently been on a school exchange programme with a secondary school in Enniscorthy. Artistic cycling uses a special bicycle for performing 30 different gymnastic exercises in a period of 5 minutes. Points are determined in advance based on the difficulty of each routine and are then awarded based on the judges' scoring of each rider. Alisa not alone managed to hold her expected finishing position of 12th out of a field of 19 but achieved 11th. place overall. The competition was very strong with the world record being broken twice within 9 minutes. This was the first time Ireland entered the European Junior Championships with the hope of more to come. Primary Pupils Suffer
Primary pupils in East Galway and North Tipp. are the worst victims of ongoing Government cuts in Education, according to the local Portumna / Woodford I.N.T.O. Branch. An already bad P/T ratio has been worsened. The Government abolished schoolbook grants for necessitous families. Overcrowded classes are still condemned to prefabs, if schools are lucky enough to secure prefabs! Builders are left idle, while further millions are wasted on "temporary" prefab accommodation. Parents should vote to rescind these cuts and future cuts. Parents should not vote with their feet! They should vote with their hearts and with their heads, for the sake of the primary pupils of East Galway and of North Tipp. The local and European elections take place next Friday 6th June all over Ireland, the polling station in Portumna is located in the Town and Community Hall and the polling boots open at 7.00am to 10.00pm. Portumna and the outline parishes needs representation in Galway County Council so make sure you come out and cast your Vote for the local Candidates.

G.A.A. News
Sunday Night, May 31st last was the Night of Celebration for the Portumna teams that brought unprecedented success to the Club in 2008/2009. The Junior C’s won their Championship for the first time and received an enthusiastic reception when Gerry Larkin, Chairman of the County Board presented them with their hard-earned medals. He also presented the medals to our Under 21 hurlers and these were also given a standing ovation. The former President of the GAA, Kilkenny’s Nicky Brennan, was on hand to present the medals to our all-conquering AIB All-Ireland Club Hurling Champions who also retained their County Championship & County League titles over the past year. Nicky was deeply honoured to be asked to preside at this occasion and was fulsome in his praise of the quality of play and sportsmanship displayed in the Club Championship and especially Joe Canning as a role model for the Association. He also praised the Teams Management, Club Officers and Committee for their organisation of the club and the night. There were further presentations to the various team managements, County representatives, Players of the Year generously sponsored by Terence O’Flaherty and a special presentation to John Muldoon, a former underage hurler with Club and County on his attaining two Senior International Rugby caps. This was presented by Club Chairman, Dan Lynch, to his mother, Claire. Celia Keane was the very worthy recipient of the Club Person of the Year for her work as Treasurer and other duties in progressing the future of Portumna GAA. The Portumna Camogie Club also used the occasion to present their medals to their Junior team on winning the County League in 2008 and added a lot of glamour and life, especially to the dancing to the Showband Show and the occasion drifted into early morning.

On the hurling front, the Junior A’s had their second draw of the Championship. Well Done to our representatives on the Galway Senior Hurling Panel who made a successful debut in the Leinster Championship with a comprehensive victory over Laois.

Lotto Numbers for Saturday May 30th 2009 were 1, 5, 18 & 28. There was no Jackpot winner and two Match 3’s, Patrice Murray & Paddy Callan will each receive €50. Next week’s Jackpot will be €4000.

It’s exam time and Portumna GAA wish everyone from the club sitting exams over the next few weeks a successful outcome to their endeavours.
