Local Elections
Willie Burke represented Portumna on the County Council for many years, he won his seat in 1992 and sat on the County Council for 7 years, lost it in the 1999 election, regained it in 2004, and unfortunately lost it again in last weeks local elections. It’s a pity that Portumna does not have a County Councillor that lives in the Town to represent them. Jimmy McClearn Fine Gael from Killimor regained the seat he lost in 2004; we wish him the best for the coming 5 years. Jimmy is our nearest representative in the area and has promised to do all he can for the area.

Local Tourism
Maybe one of the first items on the agenda for our new local representative Jimmy McClearn is Tourism-how to promote portumna and the surrounding area. The impression one gets from picking up tourist maps etc is that we do not exist. In 1969 we had a Tourist Office Caravan in the Town Square fully manned 7 days a week. Now 40 years on, the square is still there but the Caravan is long gone. Portumna is an ideal location for family Holidays. Why are we not in the Shannon Development Region? We have so much to offer and nobody knows it’s there.

Portumna GAA Notes
Following the previous week’s victory celebrations, Our Senior Hurlers were back in Championship action last weekend and after a nine point win over Beagh, have now topped their Group with one fixture remaining versus Turloughmore. There was no winner of last weeks Lotto Jackpot and there were eight match three’s: Shane Hogan, Paddy Diamond, Dermot Moore, Jane Burns, Anne Marie Walker, Pauline Fallon, Peter Flannery and Sarah Molloy. Next week’s Jackpot will be €4100.
