Day Care Centre
Portumna Social Services Committee would like to express sincere thanks to all who supported its Fundraising Golf Classic in Portumna Golf Club last Thursday 11th and Friday 12th June. It was an outstanding success. To the business people of Portumna all of whom offered sponsorship and or entered teams, Donie O Meara of Super Valu the main sponsor, Tipperary Water, Glennons Suppliers, Lyons' Vegetable Shop and so many ordinary individuals. To the people of Tynagh, Abbey, Woodford, Rathcabbin and Lorrha who either sponsored tee's or played golf. To those who travelled from Birr, Roscrea, Athenry, Tuam, Sligo and as far away as Dublin to play golf. To the golf club staff and its members who offered so much help and support in preparation for the event and again on the day, it could not have been done without you. To our own committee members who gave so much of their time and energy. To all who helped in any way, a very big thank you to each and every single one. The committee still lives in hope of receiving some help from governing bodies. They are happy to say the work has commenced on the extension to the day room. Everyone is welcome to call and see the work in progress and to visit the Day Care Centre.

Match of the Century
New stars were born on the hurling fields of Portumna last Sunday! The parents of St.Brendan's N.S. took to the field to raise funds for interactive white boards. A very entertaining match took place with guest appearances from Portumna hurlers and camogie players. The PPPA wish to express our sincere thanks to all those who helped make the event the success it was. A special word of thanks to our sponsors Billy Horrigan and Clada soft drinks. To the Red Cross, Donie O'Meara, Ray Kennedy, the Staff and BOM of St.Brendan's N.S., Supervalu, Portumna GAA club and the players thank you. With your generosity we have raised 5,4oo euros to date. All sponsorship cards and money to be returned to the PPPA. Pictures of the event are available from Picture This.

Sun Shines on Sign Out's Mid Summer Session
Mid Summer in Portumna saw the sun shine and large crowds gather throughout the day at Sign Out Youth Cafe to listen to a wide variety of live music provided by local youth bands. Tony Hogan, MC for the event praised the wonderful youth facility including the All Weather Pitch provided by Portumna Sign Out Youth Co and thanked all the bands for generously giving their time for this first outdoor gig. He wasted no time introducing the first act of the evening – Joe & Paul Casey, Darren Bourke and Johnathan Fahy who got the evening off to a great start promising a lively event. Next up was Average at Best followed by Anthem 42. Pierre Greijmans was sound engineer for the day. Throughout Maureen Kenny and her team kept the BBQ sizzling providing refreshments and food for all. Finally Tony welcomed Reef Stained, winners of the Connacht Final Coca Cola Blastbeat Competition, on stage rounding up a very successful and enjoyable evenings entertainment. The Sign Out Youth Co would like to thank all who came along and in particular all those who helped, in no small way with the evenings Session and tidying up.

Sign Out Youth Cafe is open every Friday evening from 7pm to 9.30pm as a drop in facility, further information from 087 6779267

Portumna Cub Scouts
10th Galway Portumna Cub Scouts completed a hectic and very enjoyable year’s activities on Friday night last with kayaking on Lough Derg. Thanks as always to Diarmuid Lally for facilitating same. Cubs were also presented with their achievement badges for the year. This included both their progression badge, which they earn for successfully completing each year’s programme, and their badges to acknowledge skills mastered during the year. They also received the very special badge to mark their attendance at Jam Oige, the national four day Cub Camp held over the June Bank Holiday weekend at Dalgan Park, Navan in Co Meath. The Cubs had a hectic weekend in setting up camp, preparing meals and attending all the activities during the camp. Cub leaders wish Isabelle Coughlan, Liam Connelly, Eugene McDonagh & Andrew Williams, the four Cubs departing to the Scouts Section, the very best of luck as they continue their scouting experience.

Portumna Tidy Towns

Well done to everyone who continues to keep outside their premises or homes clean & tidy. This is a great help in keeping the town looking its best, particularly now that we are in the busy tourist season. Hopefully you will have noticed the great work being undertaken around the town in dealing with some black spots, particularly beside the Court House and at the Castle Gates/Yew Walk area. Thanks to all involved in getting these areas tidied up. Clean-ups will continue during the summer months so your help would always be appreciated. Please contact any member of the Committee for further information.

Last Friday, Portumna welcomed Naas Co. Kildare as their guests for Feile na nGael. They arrived on Friday afternoon played and beat Portumna in the first game at 3.00 p.m. They were introduced to their host families and afterwards went to Tullamore for the opening ceremony of the Feile. Afterwards they were fed in the dressing rooms and Joe Canning was on hand to say a few words. On Saturday, both clubs travelled to Coolderry Co. Offaly where Portaferry of Down beat Portumna and Naas beat Coolderry. In the final Group matches, Portumna beat Coolderry but Naas also went down to Portaferry, leaving the Down side to travel to the Feile qualifiers. They both returned to Portumna to a mighty Bar-B-Q.
