Artistic Cycling - European Championship for Indoor Cycling 2009
Congratulations to Alisa Fitzpatrick 15 years of age who represented Ireland in the singles artistic cycling in the European Junior Championships in Holland recently. Artistic cycling uses a special bicycle for performing 30 different gymnastic exercises in a period of 5 minutes. Points are determined in advance based on the difficulty of each routine and are then awarded based on the judges' scoring of each rider. Alisa not alone managed to hold her expected finishing postion of 12th out of a field of 19 but achieved 11th place overall. The competition was very strong with the world record being broken twice within 9 minutes. This was the first time Ireland entered the European Junior Championships with the hope of more to come.

Artistic cycling: It was founded by an American over 100 years ago and features mainly in central and east Europe and in some Asian countries. Artistic cycling is a form of competitive indoor cycling in which athletes perform exercises for points on specialized, fixed gear bikes in a format similar to gymnastics. The exercises are performed before judges in five minute rounds by singles, pairs, four- or six-person teams. Points are determined in advance based on the difficulty of each exercise and are then awarded based on the judges’ scoring of each exercise.

Portumna Camogie Club
Well done to the U-10 Camogie team on reaching the Semi-Final. The girls travelled to Coolarne to play Turloughmore in the Quarter Final. A great performance from all the girls on the day helped make it a one nil victory for Portumna, the only score in the game coming from Shauna Muldoon in the first half. The team were drawn against Cappataggle in the Semi Final. The girls put up a great battle with Michelle Mitchell scoring a point from a free in the first half. However, the second half saw Cappataggle score a goal from a free. The girls fought to the end but unfortunately for us it was the opposing team who came out on top in the end. The girls gave it everything they had and made a great improvement as they had already been beaten by them 4 nil in the group game. The team were: Saoirse Starr, Molly Fitzgerald, Courtney Daniels, Anna Kelly, Sarah Hanbury, Aideen Tully, Michelle Mitchell, Molly Carroll, Shauna Muldoon, Aisling Harte, Roisin Kelly, Saoirse Mullen, Elaine Martin, Louise Kelly, Linda Nevin, Anita Hickey, Shauna Murray, Niamh Quinton. Emily Foley, Lisa Greenwood, Kasey Moore, Saoirse O’Toole.

The Junior A girls were invited to a 12 –side tournament in Turloughmore last Sunday week in memory of Agnes Keane. Having played a number of matches throughout the day the girls reached the final along with Turloughmore. There was an outstanding performance from the girls doing themselves and the club proud. An enjoyable day was had by all. The team were: Ciara Molloy, Orla Hayes, Trish Burke capt., Lyndsay McClearn, Mandy Moore, Sile Ryan, Sarah Conboy, Niamh Molloy, Nicola Muldoon, Katie O’Brien, Niamh McClearn, Tara Ruttledge, Lisa Lynch, Emma Keane, Emma Ruttledge,Tanya Fallon.

The U-16’s and Junior A’s to begin their Championship next week.

All went well for Shane O`Rourke in the Gobi March 2009, with Shane running the distance of 158 miles across the desert in 29 hours, 29 minutes and 11 second, spread over 6 days. This earned him a finish in fifth place. Eric LaHaie from the US won the event in 26.43.50. Portumna Tidy Towns
Well done to everyone who continues to keep outside their premises or homes clean & tidy. This is a great help in keeping the town looking its best, particularly now that we are in the busy tourist season. Hopefully you will have noticed the great work being undertaken around the town in dealing with some black spots, particularly beside the Court House and at the Castle Gates/Yew Walk area. Thanks to all involved in getting these areas tidied up. Clean-ups will continue during the summer months so your help would always be appreciated. Please contact any member of the Committee for further information.
