St. Dympna’s Services Fundraiser
St. Dympna’s Services, Portumna, are most grateful to the Sliabh Aughty Cycling Club in association with Portumna Lions Club who did a Sponsored cycle on Sunday 28th June, in order to raise funds towards the purchase of a hoist, which will enable people with disabilities access a swimming pool. The cyclists set out from The Shannon Oaks at 8.30a.m. Their cycle took in Killimor, Ballinasloe, Eyrecourt, Banagher and back to Portumna again. A well earned rest was had in Ballinasloe at the Emerald Bar. Sincere thanks to the owners Derry and Eileen Burke, for making their premises available for the stop, and to all who helped on the day, as well as all who sponsored the cyclists. The hoist, when purchased, will be held in The Shannon Oaks. If anybody would like to contribute to this project, they can do so by contacting 090 9741377.

An Anúna concert is a true “show”, a combination of movement, elegant costume, candles and ethereal and haunting music sung in a unique way. And on Sunday, September 20th, at 7.30pm as the closing event of the Festival they will perform in the newly restructured Parish Church in Portumna. The Local Bus
The Local Bus provides 17 services in South East Galway carrying in excess of 1,000 passengers per month. As part of its efforts to continue improving services and also to see what other transport needs are in South East Galway, a series of public meetings are being held in the parish areas. The next meetings will be held in Tuesday 21st July in the Village Inn, Kilchreest and Wednesday 22nd July in the Community Club House, Tynagh. Meetings start at 8.30 p.m. The Local Bus is organised by SE Galway IRD, a non-for-profit, community-owned local development company based in Portumna. It is funded by the Department of Transport and the Department of Social & Family Affairs. The IRD is interested in particular in hearing from people, including young people and people with a disability, that have a transport need. For further information, please telephone the Local Bus on 090- 9741867.

Irish Water Safety Week
Last week 60 children enrolled in lifesaving and swimming lessons down at the swimming area in Portumna. The instructors were Barney O Reilly, Henry Mullen, and Sighle Burke. The classes ranged from total beginners to Rescues. Peter Dillon and his Sister, Cathy received the Inland Open Water Award, they are fully trained lifeguards. The one common thread that has kept these swimming classes going over the past 30 years is Mr Barney O Reilly; he has a passion for teaching people to swim and later to learn the lifesaving skills that are so important. Hopefully he will stay teaching for many more years.

Shannon Bank Walk

Golden Jubilee for Mercy College Woodford
Saturday 26th September 2009 from 3.00pm - Mark this date into your diary, especially if you had any conection with Woodford college. At some stage everyone thinks of a Class reunion well here is the perfect opportunity. Any classes / school groups who want to use the occasion to actually have a class reunion are more than welcome. Organise it among yourselves, let us know in advance roughly the numbers and we will do our best to ensure that the welcome is there. It might only be a cup of tea in the hand, but one thing is for certain, it will be a lot harder to hold the cup in the hand if you wait another 50 yrs for this opportunity to come around. Do not think about it just forward this to anybody remotely connected to Mercy College Woodford. If they have not got an email address, well you might be speaking to them on the phone, or meet them on the street. Any assistance / memories that can be given would be appreciated including the following. Old school photos, Class Photos bring them along on the day.

Portumna Camera Club
The local camera Club had an outing to Meelick Lock last week, it was different, and pictures were taken of the fast flowing Shannon as it gushed through the Weirs and down towards Meelick Lock. The evening came to a close with a picnic which was put together by Ann NcEntee, Ann Carty & Mary Burke. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 21st in the beautiful village of Abbey at 7pm. New members always welcome.
