Junior Chamber Tourist Map/Brochure
On Friday 7th August 2009, at 8pm, Portumna Chamber of Commerce will launch its Portumna tourist town map/brochure in the Social Centre of Portumna Retirement Village. This full colour, quality brochure includes a street map of the town, and features editorial on the main visitor attractions in the area as well as advertorial for the tourist related businesses. The publication will be distributed free of charge to tourists via the tourist accommodation, the members’ businesses and the visitor attractions in the area. The brochure was produced by Limerick based tourism marketing company Glance Promotions who will distribute the brochure through its network of distribution stands in outlets in counties Galway, Westmeath, and Limerick. The publication promises to be an essential marketing tool for tourism in the area and is the first of many initiatives that the Chamber of Commerce has in store to boost tourism figures in the Portumna area. This user-friendly brochure/map highlights the wealth of amenities, shops and services that Portumna has to offer the visitor. The Chamber of Commerce hopes that this will encourage tourists to travel to Portumna and stay in the area for longer. The publication was funded in the main by the business community of Portumna and also received grant assistance from Galway County Council under the Community Support Scheme. For further information on the above please contact: Timmy Walsh (President) 087- 2629092, Dan Lynch (Treasurer) 087-6422424, or Tony Williams (P.R.) 087- 6858122.

The Gabels Housing Estate
The Gabels is a new Housing estate nestled in behind the St Bridget’s Road estate. It is a mixed development comprising of single storey, Detached and Semi Detached affordable Houses. Up until recently (last week to be exact) there was no public lighting on the estate. The houses are beautifully appointed with the old Workhouse as a backdrop, but they hold dark secrets, according to a spokesperson for the Residents. firstly the wheelchair access, which surprisingly is at the back door is not adequate to allow a wheelchair (standard issue) up and in the back door safely, in fact you would need to be a Harry Houdini to get your wheelchair in over the gap that is left between the ground and the lip on the door frame, the width of the back doors is 28 inches, the width of a wheelchair is 23 inches leaving 5 inches to play around with. The footpaths are not level and will eventually trip someone, the capping on the wall surrounding the estate is falling off. There are no signs or signals to alert motorists that drive into the estate that there might be children playing, nor is there any speed limit signs as you enter the estate. The visibility onto the main Road as you leave the Estates is very poor; the one entrance serves also as an exit despite the large number of houses and Day Care centre which occupies the land. The ESB have a power supply between the estates, the children play on it every day, the gap between the wall and the power station is wide enough for a child to fall between the consequences could be fatal. All in all the Council have “A Duty of Care” to their tenants and in this case they are negligent, it is only a matter of time before an accident happens.
