Tidy Towns - New Flower Boxes
A new Portumna Tidy Towns committee was formed during the summer of 2008. Membership includes: Mike Goode, Ann Rabbitt, Marie Gunning, Paddy Callan, Marcella Murray, Ita Hynes, Conor O’Meara, Orla Walshe.

The single binding objective of all is to enhance the physical beauty of the town for the benefit of both local residents and the many tourists who visit. The group are doing tremendous work about the Town and along the main roads leading into Portumna. Last week 6 wooden flower boxes 3ft High x 3 ft Wide were placed along the main streets- 2 in the Square, 1 at Dillons Corner, 1 at Clossicks Corner, 1 outside the Old Court House and one on the Bridge Road, they come preplanted and they immediately added an array of colour to the Town. The Committee wish to those groups who gave sponsorship and a plaque will be placed on each planter identifying the sponsors. It is still possible for groups to sponsor further planters by contacting a member of the committee. They have brought a dash of colour to the town and will be a permanent fixture for many years to come.

The Tidy Towns Committee are a voluntary group of people who meet once a week to do a big clean up, they deserve a lot credit for the amount of effort and time they put into giving the Town a clean image and highlighting the beauty spots that Portumna has to offer. First impressions do count, and a well presented town can be a pleasant place to browse and visit the Shops, Restaurants etc.

The Tidy Towns group have been extremely fortunate to have obtained the services of the Galway Rural Development/ FAS schemes and they are continuing their work on several project areas of the town, most noteable being the amenity area and the Yew walk. Major improvements could be achived if there was to be a cooperative effort by the townspeople, the business community and the local authorities.

Emerald Star Update
Mr Noel Treacy T.D. recently wrote to the Regional Operations Manager of Emerald Star Line in regard to the reduction in the numbers of rental boats. The detailed reply revealed that due to the economic downturn within which they are operating they had no choice but to move the boats to other markets, these other markets such as England have seen a sizeable increase in bookings, as foreigners avail of the cheaper sterling and UK Holiday makers, holiday within the UK. Mr Mark Roding went on to say that they had moved boats from all 3 bases in Ireland namely Portumna, Carrick on Shannon and Belturbet, Portumna has not been singled out and the reduction has been across the board. These Boats have been reallocated throughout Europe in our other bases. This reallocation of boats is an ongoing process and happens throughout the operating year on year in Europe. Finally although the fleet size has decreased, the remaining boats are now better booked, with us now seeing empty jetties, during the week, for the first time in years, as the whole fleet are out on hire. This increased utilization and subsequent financail return will leave Emerald Star in a much better position when justifying getting some of our next generation boats, which are currently being designed for 2011 delivery. The strategy for Portumna as with the other 2 bases, is to maximise the usage of the fleet, maxamise the financial return and renew the fleet with next generation boats. Hopefully the Portumna base will stay operating well into the foreseeable future.
