Weight Watchers
Are you thinking about losing weight? Stop thinking about it and start doing it. Monday is great for losing weight! Weight Watchers meetings are now held on Monday in Acorn to Oak Creche, St. Brigid's Road, Portumna. Meeting times 7:00pm for men and women and 8:15pm for men only. New members are always welcome.

Lotto Numbers for Saturday August 29th 2009 were 5,9,15 & 19. There was no Jackpot winner and 2 Match Three winners, Shane Leybourne & Rody Gorman get €50 each.

The Junior A Hurlers were beaten by a strong Loughrea outfit in the knockout stages on Sunday evening in Ballinasloe while the Seniors played a challenge against Dublin champions ballyboden-St. Enda’s as they prepare for the resumption of the knockout stages of the championship in September.

The club are running a Golf Classic in Portumna Golf Club on the 17th & 18th September with great prizes.


Woodford Branch Irish Red Cross
The Woodford Branch of the Irish Red Cross are delighted to announce the arrival of it’s ambulance which was officially launched on Sunday 23rd August. The Branch was set up in September 2005 and currently has twenty senior members and fifteen cadets. Training is ongoing and current members are trained from Practical First Aid to Emergency Medical First Responder level. Members are also trained in Defibrillator use and as Cardiac First Responders. Over the past few months various events, including sponsored walks, a darts competition and a tractor run were organised to help fund the purchase of the ambulance. The Committee of the Woodford Red Cross Branch would like to thank all those who assisted and contributed to these recent fund raising events and local organisations who gave generous donations. Fund raising will be ongoing to fully equip and maintain the ambulance. Particular appreciation is extended to Red Cross Galway Area Director Mr. Brian Madden who has given us tremendous support and encouragement over the years.


Certificate in Local History
The University of Limerick Certificate in Local History provides an introduction to the research methods required for writing local history. It is especially offered for the adult student interested in any aspect of local history especially from the Portumna and neighbouring areas. This part-time course (Tuesdays 6.30 to 9.30 pm) runs for twelve weeks each in Autumn 2009 and Spring 2010. The first class begins on 8 September 2009. Applications are invited from mature students (aged 23 years and above), who will be considered on the basis of educational attainment, work experience, motivation and overall potential. Introduction to Digital Photography for Adults and Teenagers
Introduction to Digital Photography is the first of three workshops taking place in the relaxed surroundings of Sign Out Youth Cafe (located to the rear of the old VEC building). Learn how to organise your photos, add something from one image to another, cropping, image editing , close up photography and lots more. No previous experience necessary. Two courses will run over 5 nights, one for Adults and one for Teenagers, on Mondays and on Wednesdays, commencing Mon 28th Sept. Places are limited, so get your name down as soon as possible.

The second in the series of workshops, commencing early October, will be on Graphic Design - creating a brochure layout, using background images and working with text.

The third will be on Website Design – Setting up a one to five page site, using images and linking pages. Each workshop will build on information from the previous one but it is not necessary to attend all three workshops. All the above workshops are facilitated by Mark Conroy (MA. Soccer Tournment
Sign Out Youth Cafe Portumna, is hosting a fundraising Soccer tournament, over the weekend of the 26th/27th Sept. It is open to all teams from pubs - clubs - to one off teams formed by pals - the entry fee is €20 per man. Teams consist of seven players (5 Players + 2 subs ) who may interchange at any time. Runireland Triathalon Marshals
Sign Out Youth Company are providing the marshals once again for the Runireland Triathlon taking place in Portumna on Sat 5th Sept. We are looking for adult volunteers to help along the route, from 10am on the day. Portumna's Junior A Camogie Advance to County Final
Last Saturday saw the meeting of Portumna and Turloughmore in Ballindereen in the Junior A Camogie semi final. The home team having previously beaten Turlough in the league final already this year.

It was Katie O'Brien who got the first point of the game, followed by a point from Tara Ruttledge. Megan Moran put her name on the scoreboard getting her first of three points. Turlough replied with two points, whilst Tara Ruttledge put the ball in the back of the net for the home side. Turlough replied with a goal. Tara was pulled down in the square to give a penalty to Portumna. Tara put this in the back of the net and another free taken by Tara went over the bar. The final score of the first half came from Nicola Muldoon with a point. This leaving the half time score Portumna 2-7 to Turloughmore 1-2.

The second half saw more action from both sides. A free by tara went over the bar followed by two points from Turlough. Another point from play by Tara and a clever goal from sub Niamh McClearn kept the side ahead. Turlough replied with a goal in their end. Another pointed free by Tara and a goal from Nicola Muldoon helped to extend our lead. It was Turlough who got the next goal but only to be answered by a goal from Philippa Coleman. Turlough got another point to leave the final score Portumna 5-11 to Turloughmore 3-5.

PolyTunnel Course: 23rd September 10.00am - 4.30pm. This is the time of year to begin to plan your polytunnel. Dolores Keegan, experienced polytunnel grower and teacher will facilitate this day. Soccer Registration for U8s
Portumna Town F.C. will hold registration for new and existing under 8 players at the soccer field on Saturday the 5th of September at 11am. The club provides soccer for both boys and girls. To register, players must be aged 6 years by the 29th of June 2009 and not older than 8 years by the 31st of December 2009. Registration Fee is €40. New members must provide an original birth cert.

Arts Group Meeting: A meeting of Portumna Arts Group will take place in Na Calai CDP on Thursday, Sept 3rd at 8.30pm. The final touches to the Shorelines Arts Festival programme are now underway - all interested in helping, supporting or participating are welcome to attend. Tickets for our "Anuna" concert on Sept 20th in Portumna Church at 7.30pm are now on sale in The Boathouse, Hayes & Hayes Pharmacy, Palmerston Stores, Ladies Day and Salmons Newsagent. Other outlets include Loughrea's News 'n Choose, The Square News in Birr; DK Travel, Nenagh; Sound of Music, Nenagh, Concannon's in Killimor and The Gem in Borrisokane. Shorelines Arts Festival - Art Exhibition: Artists are invited to participate in this year's Art Exhibition in The Nunnery as part of the Shorelines Arts Festival. Shorelines Arts Festival - Singing Workshops: Portumna Arts Group are delighted to welcome Philip Short, Musical Director and Leader of Loughrea Youth Theatre to lead a singing workshop for adults in An Gairdin on Sunday, Sept 20th at 3pm. Prior experience is not necessary and an enjoyable afternoon of group singing, exercises and harmony is guaranteed. Shorelines Arts Festival - Teenagers Arts Events: As part of Shorelines Arts Festival, there are three vibrant and energetic workshops available to the young people of the area. On Saturday, Sept 19th from 3- 5pm, Ruth Sheridan of In Step Stage School will lead a Hip-Hop Dance class for teens in Portumna Town Hall. Workshop will cost €10, payable in advance to secure a place. Please call 0872931055. On Sunday, Sept 20th a DJ Technology workshop for students aged over 11 will take place in Sign Out Youth Cafe from 1.30-3pm with well known facilitator , John Lillis. On Sunday afternoon, Portumna Youth Theatre will have a workshop with Fergal Darcy in Portumna Town Hall at 3.30pm catering for 12-18 year olds . Shorelines Arts Festival - Writing Workshops: For people interested in writing, Shorelines Arts Festival will host two writing workshops on Saturday, Sept 19th. "Whose story is it anyway?"-10.30am -1pm in An Gairdin with writer/poet Geraldine Mills. Cost €10.A creative writing/ short fiction workshop of 2.5-3.00 hours if that time frame is suitable This will suit all levels of writing experience and will cover topics like where a story begins and ends, point of view , characterisation, conflict. Paper and pen needed. In the afternoon from 2.30-5pm, a workshop entitled "Shaping up to Writing" will be facilitated by Michael Coady . This workshop will focus on poetry or prose. Participants are invited to bring copies of their work. The workshop will focus on beginnings, the essential first draft; how to go on developing the personal voice and recognising one's material. Youth Theatre: Portumna Arts Group are delighted to welcome back Fergal Darcy as the facilitator for the Portumna Youth Theatre in the coming term. Membership will be limited in numbers , so if you are aged 12-17, attending secondary school, interested in stage and theatre, then get onto Alma at 086 319 6159 and with a deposit of €20 and a booking form completed, you can secure a place in the YT. Membership will be on a first come, first deposit, first in basis. The YT will meet on Wednesday evenings, commencing late September. Camera Club
The local camera club meets every 2 weeks on Tuesday nights, the members have been asked to submit 3 images their own favourites to be included in the up coming Shorelines Arts festival dates from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th September. For more information contact Mary Keary 087 9598291
