Comhairle na nÓg - Portumna Sign Out Youth Company
Portumna Sign Out Youth Company, in association with Galway County Council, recently hosted Comhairle na nÓg in 'Sign Out' Youth Cafe, Portumna. Comhairle na nOg is the local youth council, which gives young people the opportunity to be involved in the development of local services and policies and to discuss local and national issues of relevance to them. The theme chosen for the day was 'Know Your Rights – Protection & Welfare of Young People'.

Portumna and District Active Retirement Association
The Active Retirement Association is anything but retired as they are literally in “full swing”. They held an Irish Dance Night on the 1st October in Portuma Active Retirement Village to mark Age Action Week. Mary Smith, Ann McGee, Annie Canallan, Martin Donoghue & Brian Horrigan provided the music, and everyone enjoyed a marvelous night. This provided wonderful dance music, which meant action on the dance floor for everybody and plenty of foot tapping. Members provided poetry and prose, Oliver Gibbons sang for us. Martin Ruttledge took to the floor and recited some wonderful “tall tales” which created great memories and laughter. All, followed by a raffle, enjoyed a beautiful spread of homemade sandwiches, scones, tarts and buns. A big thank you to everyone who worked hard and gave their time and talents to make this night such a success. It is hoped this will be a regular feature in our activities.

Many of our members attended a very informative evening on mobile phones ran by Na Calai. Members who made their way to Claregalway last Sunday for the tea dance session held there enjoyed a good day. Other activities planned for this month are, a day trip to the Puncestown races, talks including the use of a deliberator chiropody care, and a quiz night.

Well done to Portumna camogie teams Junior and under Sixteen on their success in the championship.

Scheme of Community Support For Older People - Na Calai CDP
The Department of Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs announced this week that they are reopening the Scheme of Community Support for Older People. The Scheme provides grants to community and voluntary groups to encourage and assist them in improving the security of vulnerable older people in their own homes. It aims to do this by providing grants for the once-off cost of installing socially monitored alarm system, and smoke/carbon monoxide alarms. Please note that in some cases the fund received may not cover the full cost of the specific piece of equipment.

Na Calaí CDP are making an application to the above scheme and if you would like more information or wish to receive an application form please phone us on (090) 97 41887 or call into our office on Abbey Street, Portumna.

The closing date for receipt of signed application forms to Na Calaí CDP is Monday the 19th of October at 3pm. Please note that the Department will only consider 15 applicants per group, therefore it will be submitted on a first come first serve basis.

Portumna Rugby Club
Portumna got back to winning ways with a well deserved 12 - 6 away win to a very strong Carrick-on-Shannon outfit. First half tries by Andrew Keary and an excellent solo effort by Ronan Moore, converted by Evan Moran saw Portumna lead by 12 - 6 at the break. A very physical effort by both sides in the second half did not yield any scores and Portumna held on for the win. The league table is finely poised with Portumna now in joint second.

Next up is the vital home tie vs Loughrea next Sunday at 3 pm. Please support.
