Biodiversity Training Day
Abbey village was a hive of activity last October 15th, as 54 people arrived in the community centre for biodiversity training in their local area. People came from tidy town groups, community groups and local Rural Social Schemes and FAS Schemes from all over the local area including Woodford, Ballinakill, Portumna, Loughrea and of course Abbey itself. The day long seminar aimed to teach local communities how to encourage wildlife and nature in their area, with case study visits to places of interest in Abbey village, including the insect garden and the school. There is growing recognition of the importance of nature and wildlife in our communities and this seminar reflected this, giving advice on how best to develop our important natural heritage. There was great excitement when it was discovered that otters are one of the residents of the river in Abbey village, after Pat Roberts, one of the tutors, found otter tracks there. Participants felt that their knowledge around understanding, respecting and managing biodiversity was greatly enhanced and many future plans for planting and other projects were discussed; especially important given the extra points available in the Tidy Towns competition for biodiversity awareness. This seminar was the last in a series around the county, funded by Galway Rural Development and supported by the People and Nature Project and Galway County Council. McCarthy Keville O Sullivan, an environmental group in the city, delivered the training in an interesting and accessible manner. Many thanks to the community of Abbey, and to the people at the community centre who helped out on the day and facilitated the training so graciously.

Coming towards the end of the artistic cycling competitions for this year, both Alisa and Celina Fitzpatrick put in fine performances last weekend.

Alisa, in her Irish colours, took 4th place in the 2009 Youth International event in Worms, Germany. The competition, which was very strong, included a number of the participants who performed against her in the recent European Championships. Hoping for a 7th place finishing, Alisa put in a tremendous performance and was unfortunate to just miss out on the bronze.

Celina competed in the Girls U-14 2009 Bavarian Cup final in Roth (Nuremberg). She finished in a well-earned 7th place, one place higher than expected and was also able to achieve a personal best performance during the weekend competitions.
