Portumna Players Winter Production
The Players are presently in rehearsal for their Winter production, the play is Marina Carr’s “The Mai” the Director is Marian Frawley. This play is one of Marina Carr’s finest works; she is from County Offaly and is recognized internationally as one of the finest playwrights of her generation. The play is a haunting tragedy and centers on the story of The Mai, a forty-year-old woman who is struggling to save her marriage. When her estranged husband Robert returns to the new house she has built by Owl Lake, her deep love for him is tested once again. Their daughter Millie narrates this dark and sometimes comical story as she recalls The Mai and Robert's tumultuous relationship and the legend of Owl Lake.

Four generations of The Mai's family gather in her new house as she desperately succumbs to the obsession and madness that is so prevalent amongst the women around her. The matriarch, an opium smoking 100 year old Grandma Fraochlan, herself pining for her nine fingered fisherman, fails to realise the effect her own neurosis has had on the family. The women march blindly on as their legacy once again reveals itself - with tragic results. The play is scheduled to run the week prior to Christmas.

Portumna Scouts - Operation Rogue Scout
Portumna scouts went into survival mode over the weekend as they went deep into the Slieve Bloom Mountains outside of Kinnitty. The troop joined up with scouts from Carrabane and enjoyed a weekend full of exploration and adventure. The activities included long range night hikes, The art of camouflage and concealment, building and sleeping in improvised shelters, a military style infiltration exercise into enemy territory and gorge walking down a stream. The group returned home Sunday afternoon tired and weary. Well done to them all, with more than the odd speckle of camouflage cream behind the ears the scouts were handed back to their parents for some badly needed TLC.

The scouts would like to extend a thank you to Morgan Claffey and his venture Scouts Nicola and Caitriona for all their help and support over the weekend, Birr scouts for the use of their wonderful facilities, and the Carrabane Scouts and leaders for their continued friendship.

Portumna Rugby Club Fashion Show
The Annual Portumna Club Fashion Show was as on last Friday night and once again was a roaring success. Almost 300 people gathered in the Shannon Oaks Hotel for a great night of fashion and of course fun. Portumna's own "Posh and Becks" a.k.a Michael and Muirne Goode were the MC's for the night and they did a fantastic job. The crowd were entertained by large amount of fashion from local shops and for the first time ever, shops from outside the town. This also included members of the underage teams modeling as well.

The fashion was broken up with intermittent bits of the rugby clubs own brand of fun, which included having members of the crowd up on stage trying their hand at lineouts and scrums, some with hilarious consequences, but it was the show finale that had the room in hysterics. Three members of the senior team appeared on stage in costume to the sound track of "All the Single Ladies" from Beyonce and re-enacted the famous video to the best of their very limited abilities, Conor Casey, James McGrath and Johnny Smith take a bow. Congratulations to the rugby club for once again putting on a wonderful show and providing a great night out for the huge crowd that deservingly supported them.
