Portumna Hurlers
It’s been a roller-coaster seven years for Portumna senior hurlers who thankfully showed passion and skill to capture their fifth county title in seven years. In these tough times it’s nice to be able to provide a bit of joy and banter in the locality. It is testament to both team and management for their ongoing dedication and commitment. A group of players of this caliber doesn’t come around too often and it’s clear they intend to let their hurling do the talking on the pitch. Next up for Portumna is yet another grudge match with northern champions Dunloy in February who defeated Portumna at the same stage in 2004. On behalf of all the players we would like show gratitude to all the people of Portumna for your continued support both financially and on a personal basis. We hope to repay you by giving you all another memorable day in Croke park in March. Port Abu

Santa in Portumna Castle - Portumna Christmas Events
A ray of light among the gloom and the floods this Winter will be the arrival of Santa at Portumna Castle, and the switching on of the lights in the town, both happening on Sunday 6 December. The main event is the arrival of the jolly red-suited man himself, who will be dropping in from the North Pole at about 5.00 pm on Sunday the 6th. He will be in the Castle in his very own grotto, along with lots of other activities for kids, including story telling, singing, card making, and for those who haven’t written to himself yet – letter writing. All this in the fabulous setting of Portumna Castle especially decorated for the occasion. So, to see the Castle as you’ve never seen it before, come along and meet all your friends and neighbours for some badly needed festive fun.

The Events Committee would also like to let everyone know that they will be holding Church gate collections on Saturday and Sunday 28 and 29 November, in churches in the greater Portumna area. Any donations will be gratefully received. The Committee would also like to ask all the businesses in the area to continue their support for the event and the lights by donating all that they can afford – many of them have already received letters about this. The Events Committee say that Portumna, now more than ever, needs to draw as many people into the town to do their shopping there, and the lights and the events on Sunday 6 December in Portumna Castle are designed to bring people into the town and to see it looking as festive as possible. The gates of the Castle open at 4.30 pm.

Flooding in Portumna
It was like the Nikita Khrushchev and John F Kennedy saga of 1962 over the Cuba affair, will the missiles face America or no, will the flood waters in and around Portumna break the banks along the Shannon and flood the town, thankfully the water seems to be subsiding. But like the World in 1962, it was an anxious wait. The local County council workforce pulled out all the stops, - controlling the flow of traffic, and trying to channel the water into the nearby fields, word of thanks to them and their man in charge Karl Brundrit they worked tirelessly to put the residents and the motorists at ease. The wall running down the right hand side of the Bridge Road had to be knocked at several spots along the road to allow the water flow from the road into the marshes, which ran adjacent to the roads. A special word of thanks to the local Gardai who manned the road blocks and were a visible presence along the flooded roads. Take a well deserved clap on the back.

Support the Local
Developing our Parish means that we support everything “local”. Communities are under threat today from larger centers. We all depend on local enterprise and business. It should not take a crisis to make us aware. Support for local business and community effort is a vital sign of a Living Parish. Traders should be competitive in their prices.

Portumna Forest Park

Sign Out Youth Cafe - U18 Soccer Tournament
There was a wonderful turnout at Sign Out Youth Cafe’s first ever U18 Soccer Tournament last Sunday, the atrocious weather conditions failed to dampen the players enthusiasm and enjoyment. There was a large entry, all games were evenly contested with a very close final between Oisin Royston’s Team and Sean O'Meara’s Team. Tim Walsh, on behalf of Sign Out Youth Co, thanked all those for taking part in the tournament. and showing such great sportsmanship throughout the day, he paid a special word of thanks to Martin Mc Namara of Sportslawn Ireland for his generous sponsorship of the tournament, to Kayleigh O'Brien and Keith Flynn of the Irish Red Cross and to Tony for refereeing in such inclement weather conditions. Tim commended Paul Killeen, Garry Curran, Brian Fahy, Oisin Royston and Mark Walsh for organising the event. He then presented the Runners Up, Oisin Royston, Garry Curren, Paul Killeen, Padraig Brehony and Sean Duggan with their prizes and congratulated the Winners, Sean O'Meara, Keith Kelly, Justin Cahill, Niall O Meara and Thomas Cleary on their narrow victory.
