Portumna Town FC - U10 Futsal Champions
A group of U10 players from Portumna Town FC became champions last Sunday in the U10 Futsal competition run by the Midlands Schoolboys League in Mountmellick.

Futsal is relatively new to Ireland but is very popular in Brazil and it is football in its purest form. It is an essential precursor to what Pele referred to as "the beautiful game". Pace, skill, teamwork and high drama characterize this popular indoor game and this was certainly the case last Sunday when the Portumna lads had to hold their nerve through two penalty shootouts to come away victorious in a thrilling competition.

There were 20 teams from 4 counties competing in this competition held over 2 week-ends and for the boys to win it outright is an indication of the level of skill and talent being nurtured by the soccer club. Much credit is due to coaches Seamus Lynch and AnnMarie Barry for the time and effort they put into organising the squad and sacrificing their spare time to attend this prestigious competition. Congratulations to all.

Fr. Declan Kelly in the Patrician Musical Society`s - The Mikado
Fr Declan Kelly, a former curate in Portumna and an excellent actor, is due to tread the boards in the Town Hall Theatre in Galway in March, in the Patrician Musical Society`s new production of The Mikado. Playing the role of Lord Pooh Bah, Fr Declan joins a stellar cast which includes Fine Gael Councillor Hildegarde Naughton as Yum Yum and Fr Michael Byrnes, another Clonfert priest, as Pish Tush. The show is directed by Tim Landers who recently produced Oliver for Clarinbridge Musical Society. It will be nothing new for Fr Declan who was involved with the Portumna Players while stationed locally and last year received a prestigious Best Actor nomination from AIMS for his role as Fagin in Loughrea`s production of Oliver. A veteran of almost 30 different stage productions, some of which he has directed himself, Fr Declan is also currently working on a new book "Winnow All My Folly" for an English publisher about the operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. He describes it as "a labour of love". The Mikado made it’s stage debut in London’s Savoy Theatre on March 14 1885.
