Lough Derg as a Tourism Activity Destination
Following a successful meeting hosted by Shannon Development and Failte Ireland at the Shannon Oaks Hotel Portumna on 4th February last, with the purpose of setting up Lough Derg as an "Activity Hub", a follow up meeting took place at the Lakeside Hotel Killaloe on Tuesday last, which was very well attended by representatives from the business sector and indeed the voluntary sector incorporating all counties surrounding the lake. Portumna was well represented by the Chamber of Commerce, Portumna & District Development Company and from the business community. Group discussions took place, which resulted in good ideas coming forward. A steering committee incorporating representation from the counties in the Lough Derg area was set up with two representatives from Portumna elected onto this committe, Maureen Kenny of Portumna Chamber of Commerce and Marie Gunning from the Portumna & District Development Co. Ltd. The steering committe will have their first meeting on Monday next.


Portumna & District Development Company AGM
The AGM of Portumna & District Development Company will take place on Monday 8th March at 8.00pm at the Shannon Oaks Hotel Portumna. It is important that as many people as possible attend this meeting, Portumna needs to move forward and your input is vital.


Portumna Red Cross AGM
The local Red Cross AGM will take place on Monday next the 8th March in Na Calai at 8pm. The Portumna Branch of the Irish Red Cross are actively looking to recruit new members from 12 years up to adult.


Portumna GAA Club
All-Ireland Club Final Tickets: Croke Park ticket office will be in the Shannon Oaks Hotel on Monday 8th March from 6pm to 8.30pm. Tickets for the All Ireland club final can be purchased on the night.

All-Ireland Club Final Bus: Anyone interested in travelling by bus to the All Ireland club final could you please give your name as soon as possible to D.Lynch and Sons. Payment of 15 euro with booking.

Player Registration: Reminder registration night for all adult and juvenile players on Friday 5th March from 7:30pm to 9pm. Please attend as it is very important for insurance purposes.

U21 News: The under 21 hurlers got off to a good start in their championship campaign with a very convincing win over Liam Mellows last week-end, on a scoreline of 0-13 to 1-4.

Club Lotto: There was no winner of last Saturday night's lotto jackpot. The numbers drawn were 2 16 21 25. One person matched three numbers Pat Madden Gortanumera. Next weekend's lotto is worth 4800 euros.

Nob Nation: Portumna G.A.A. Club is hosting Nob Nation in the Shannon Oaks Hotel on Friday 12th March. Oliver Callan is bringing his hilarious live show to Portumna. Scenes of failing banks falling stock markets failing politicians and famous sports stars are coming live on stage as the R.T.E. Mimic performs an eighty-minute feast of comedy. Tickets can be purchased at Shannon Oaks Hotel and at D. Lynch and sons. A night not to be missed and your support will be very much appreciated.

School of Irish Dance
Stephanie Power (Gortanumera, Portumna) is proud to open a school of Irish Dance in April 2010. Stephanie has recently qualified as an Irish Dance teacher (T.C.R.G) registered with An Coimisiun le Rince Gaelacha.

Stephanie is three times World Champion. She has toured the world with various dance productions traveling to countries such as Taiwan, Dubai and Europe. She has recently returned from Australia and America where she was touring with Dance of Desire and Mystic Force.

Killimor Camogie Club - Table Quiz

Library Ireland Week
Library Ireland Week is taking place in Portumna Library from Monday 8th March to Friday 13th March.

Art Exhibition: To celebrate this week an Art Exhibition will be launched on Monday 8th @ 7.30 pm and will include a recital by the OMNA Singers.

Crochet Workshop: On Wednesday 10th March Hayley will hold a Crochet Workshop @ 7.15pm. If you would like to come along and crochet a flower with Hayley please call in and bring your crochet hook.


Sign Out Youth Project Open Evening
Sign Out Youth committee, would like to invite all young people and parents to an Open Night in Sign Out, on Tuesday 9th March from 7pm to 8pm. The aim of the Open Night is to show people this purpose built youth space and all weather pitch, the activities and programmes offered and to actively involve young people on the night in some of these activities, the emphasis is on 'doing' and actively taking part, rather than just 'talking about it'. The Youth Committee is made up of 16 to 18 year old members of Sign Out, who would like other young people to become part of the 'Sign Out Experience' a valuable asset to the local community. AGM on Wednesday 10th March 2010 at 9 pm at Scoil Mhuire Gortanumera. The present committee would love to see some new members come along with their views and ideas for the coming year. We try to keep our meetings short, start on time and finish on time. All are welcome


Portumna Scout Group - 10th Galway Scout Group
All four sections of 10th Galway Scout Group are already in full scouting action for 2010. Beavers had a very successful hike in the Burren during February, where they scaled Mullaghmore. Cubs climbed Ben Hill in a joint activity with Ireland's newest Scouting Group, 30th Galway Abbey/Duniry. Abbey/Duniry was previously a satellite group of Portumna, which is now established as an independent Group. We wish them every success in their Scouting endeavors. Scouts have been honing their orienteering and map reading skills in preparation for the hill walking season while Ventures recently had a very successful day caving in the Burren.

AGM: 10th Galway Scouting AGM will be held at the Shannon Oaks Hotel, Portumna on Thursday 11th March at 8pm. All parents and friends are requested to attend this important meeting, at which details of Scouting Ireland's new One Programme will be provided.


Wild West Barn Dance - Lorrha Lord Mayor Event
Yee Haw! Grab your partner by the hand and head on over to a wild west barn dance this Saturday, 6th March @ 9pm. Teresa Dunne Walker in her final quest as charity lord mayor candidate for Lorrha extends a warm welcome to one and all (over 21) to come along to The Ferry on Saturday night where there will be a heated 50 foot marquee decked out as a barn for the night complete with a live band and a mighty fine spread campside in the form of a BBQ for all you hungry cowboys and cowgals! Loughrea Electoral Area Local Community Forum Annual General Meeting on the 9th March in O’Deas Hotel, Loughrea at 8pm. Guest speakers will be Kenneth Finn on Alison Community Training Programme and Máire Ní Dhuibhir & Ray O’ Donoghue who will speak on the Galway Community Forum. All are welcome.


An Gáirdín - Launch of a Dedication Grove
National Tree Week, Sunday 7th March 2pm - 4pm: An Gáirdín are delighted to announce the launch of a Dedication Grove. It will be assigning a plot of land in which one can plant a tree/trees for special occasions. The Dedication Grove is an ideal and novel way to remember a loved one, celebrate an event such as births, engagements, marriages, and new jobs or just to let someone know that they are in your thoughts. The recipient will receive a Gift Card/Certificate containing the tree name, number and other details. The trees planted will be native e.g. Birch, Alder, Oak, Rowan (Mountain Ash) and Holly. Not only is this a beautiful gift but it is also an act of faith or trust in the future and helps the environment. The cost is €10 per tree with a discount for a number of trees. Portumna Kempo Karate
Portumna Kempo Karate club which was started ten years ago by James Dillon (3rd degree Black Belt in American Kempo Karate) meet every Tuesday night in the Town Hall Portumna from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Recently one of his students Jeffrey Murray from Cloghan, County Offaly went to Las Vegas and took part in the IKKA world Kempo Karate Championships where he won a gold medal in self defence fighting and a silver medal in forms. He also recently took a first place in the EKKA (European Kempo Karate Association) Leinster Karate Champion in points fighting.
