Portumna the Stage For New Marathon and Ultramarathon Races
One of East Galway's most beautiful parks will host a number of exciting new long distance foot races on June the 26th next. The inaugural Portumna Forest Park 100km & Marathon will take place on the 26th of June next and is being organised by Galway based coach and events organiser Seb Locteau of www.sebfitness.com.

The races, which are supported by both the Shannon Oaks Hotel and Coilte, will take place on shaded forest paths around the beautiful state park in Portumna. There will be a 50km option for those who just can't make their minds up between the marathon and the much longer 100km event. Race promoter Seb Locteau is excited about the unique venue for the races, "Portumna is an absolutely beautiful place to run. Obviously, the route is completely traffic free and winds along good quality paths though the forest and has nice views of the lake. The event will raise funds for the Portumna Youth Cafe (www.signout.ie), which will provide the volunteers and supporters on the day. Entries and event details are available at www.runireland.com.

Portumna Community School
Leo Club: Efforts are currently underway to determine if there is an interest in the Portumna & District area regarding the setting up of a Leo Club. The Lions Club is a vibrant organisation in the area for many years. It focuses on enhancing the community through fundraisers, events and raising awareness. In essence, a Leo Club is the equivalent for young people. Leadership – Experience – Opportunity. Those are just a few of the rewards young people gain from participating in Leos. They also happen to be the values that create the acronym of the club name. If you have already given your name or are interested in getting involved, please come along to a meeting planned for next Monday at Break time in room ‘K’. This is open to 6th yrs., 5th yrs. And T.Y.s initially.

Bank of Ireland Achievement Awards: Congratulations to Brid McClearn, Mary Cleary, Ciara Kennedy and Aoife Kennedy who were the Regional Winners of the Bank of Ireland awards and now go forward to the All Ireland Finals. They have won a €150 voucher and will receive their Regional Certs at a special function in the Ardillaun House Hotel in Galway on Tuesday, 23rd March.

Portumna Tidy Towns
We have been back in action since January! Our group takes to the streets every Saturday morning at 8.00am doing clean ups around the town and in the amenity areas! Our green areas have suffered because of the floods last November and as a result a lot of litter has washed up in the affected areas! We have applied for grant assistance to Galway County Council and hopefully, we will be successful again this year. Thanks to all those who are taking care of their little patch.... outside your house, outside your business, outside your shop. This helps us a lot. Once again, we will be entering the National Tidy Towns Competition for 2010. A major effort is needed to make our town look well. Your efforts are always appreciated. Please feel free to join us any Saturday morning, or if this is not possible, do your bit to make Portumna a pleasant place to visit and a great place to live! Once again, this year, we have the assistance of Sean Larkin and his troop of workers (GRD). They will be working on projects like, grass and greenery, painting and repairs. You can contact us at the following numbers: Michael Goode (Chairperson) 086-2715501 or Marie Gunning (Secretary) 087-2358585 or any member of our group.

Shannon's Lough Derg - The Hub
Further to recent successful meetings held in Killaloe and Paddy's Bar in Terryglass, a new committee has been elected to promote Lough Derg as an activity and holiday destination. Lily Forbes-Foulger has been elected as Secretary and represents Portumna along with Maureen Curran and Marie Gunning. A further meeting will be held in Dromineer in two weeks time. It is hoped that a plan of action will be put in place to promote the Lake for the holiday season.

Portumna & District Development Company Ltd.
The AGM was recently held at the Shannon Oaks Hotel. Chairperson Johanna Burke addressed the meeting and thanked all those Directors who attended. Various issues were discussed, including the situation regarding the Town Tenants and an up-date on this situation should be to hand by the Company's monthly meeting in April. The directors welcomed Emer Mullins as a newly elected Director. The election of Officers for 2010/2011 will take place at the next monthly meeting.

10th Galway Portumna Scout Group
Portumna Scout Group held their very well attended AGM on Thursday night last. All activity reports for the previous year were very well received and reflected the wide range of activities that youth members experience. Highlights during the year included the establishment of the new Venture Scout Section and Abbey /Duniry Satellite Sections creating their own 30th Galway Scout Group - Ireland's newest Scout Group. Plans for 2010 were also outlined, the key challenge being the introduction of the new national One Programme.

New Galway County Commissioner, Noel Leahy was in attendance and presented Camping Certificates to three Sections within 10th Galway - the only Scout Group in the County to receive Certificates for Beavers. Presentations were made by the Group to Diarmuid Lally and Kevin Donnnellan. Diarmuid's ongoing assistance to the Group in providing water based activities on Lough Derg and Kevin's co-operation in utilising the Forest Park for Scouting Activities were recognised. 10th Galway is holding their annual Church Gate Collection next week. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
