Portumna & District Lions Club
Portumna & District Lions Club would like to thank everyone for making the Table Quiz a huge success last Friday night in the Boathouse Bar. Special thanks to Fergal Coughlan, Derek Frawley & Michael Brady for providing the Venue, Questions and M.C. also a big thank you to Timmy Walsh, Muirne Goode, Hayes & Hayes Pharmacy, and Enda Burke Auctioneer for supplying the prizes on the night. All monies raised on the night went to a local family who were affected by a fire in their home recently.

Paul Keane
Paul Keane has been with the Galway County Council for 31 years, and he is about to retire on the 27th April. Over the last 3 decades Paul has been an integral part of the Council Workforce in the area. If you had left Portumna for the last 20 years or so and came back now you would still recognize Paul Keane, as he always had a wonderful smile, a pleasant word, and was always in good humour despite what the weather would throw out at him. During the heavy floods last November and into December Paul was working diligently along with his fellow workmates trying to keep the waters at bay, he worked Day and Night over those dismal weeks which seemed to go on and on, well into the new year. Wherever there was work to be done Paul was always at the forefront.

Paul Keane will be missed from the hustle and bustle that makes up the daily routine in Portumna. Paul is like the Sun, always shining, and hopefully like that Star will never fade, enjoy your retirement Paul you deserve it.

Portumna Community School
The Young Environmentalists Competition: As part of their transition year geography project, the TY students Niamh Bergin, Sarah Clarke, Mary Cleary, Michelle Cunningham, Ciara Kennedy, Brid McClearn, Aoife O’Hara, Conor O’Meara, Megan O’Meara, and Niall O’Meara have entered "The Young Environmentalists Competition" with the help of Miss O’ Sullivan. The competition is for second level schools and is based on tackling environmental issues.

As part of their project, the students have been investigating an invasive species in Lough Derg called Nuttall’s pondweed. The pondweed originates from North America and poses a serious threat to native species in Lough Derg. The weed also interferes with any form of amenity usage in an infested zone, which in turn poses a threat to local tourism in the Lough Derg area. Nuttall’s Pondweed originally entered Ireland’s rivers and lakes through the garden plant trade and was first recorded in the 1980’s. Since then there has been a gradual spread of the species throughout the country.

By doing this project, the transition year group hope to raise more awareness about invasive species in Lough Derg and the treat that Nuttall’s pondweed has on the native species of the lake. Their project was sent away on Tuesday last and they are waiting to hear if they have been short listed, so fingers crossed.

Portumna Rugby
Portumna U10s: The Portumna Under 10 team are in for a huge treat on Good Friday when Connacht host Edinburgh in the Galway Sportsground in a Magners league clash. They will be introduced to the crowd as they are paraded around the pitch, do guard of honour as the players come onto the pitch and at half time they will play a quick match against Westport. They might even get a few words of wisdom from the Connacht captain, John Muldoon after the match. This is sure to be a fantastic experience and one that will stick with them for a very long time and a great way to finish their first ever season of rugby.

Cawley Cup: Portumna recorded a huge 25 - 8 home win vs Loughrea in the Cawley Cup on Sunday last. Newly promoted Loughrea went into this game as favourites and took a 5 nil half time lead despite Portumna dominating possession. Loughrea went further ahead through the boot of Darren Mooney 5 minutes into the second half and fancied their chances of the win after the dismissal of the influential David O Hara for the home side. However it wasthe Portumna lads that took the game to Loughrea and tries from Jos Fletcher, Ronan Moore and Andrew Keary set up this well earned win. A fine kicking display from Keary added to the total and now sees Portumna taking on the might of Sligo in the quarter final.

Sahara Desert Run - Abalta Fundraiser
Fundraising is about to kick off this year again in Portumna in aid of Abalta. Last year Shane O Rourke ran the Gobi Desert finishing 4th in the world and raised €10,000 for Abalta. Shane has decided to run the Sahara Desert in October and all proceeds will again be donated to Abalta.

Abalta is a school for children with autism, which students from all over the county attend including one student from Portumna. The school teaches the kids vital academic and life skills using ABA one to one teaching. Abalta is the only ABA school in the West of Ireland. As the school is only part funded by the state fundraising is a vital part of securing an appropriate education for all the students who attend. We are aware that fundraising in these recessionary times is not easy, so we are appealing to all to support us in our efforts. You would be surprised who is willing to help if they were asked.

We are kicking off the Fundraising with a dance in the Shannon Oaks Hotel on Easter Monday night 5th of April featuring country and western sensation Mike Denver, who has kindly offered his services.

A Dog show is to be held in the grounds of Portumna Castle on April 18th at 1pm. This will be a great family day out with 20 categories to suit all. Each entry cost €4.

The Portumna forest park run/walk takes place again this year the date is the 25th of April at 10am. €10 to enter. Last year this proved to be a great success and a wonderful family day out for everyone who attended.

A big push is on again this year for volunteers to take part in the Women’s mini marathon. We aim to organise a group from Portumna and surrounding areas. Anybody who is interested in taking part please contact Rosaleen O’Rourke 087 9777963 or Aggie Flaherty 087 6873565.
