O'Toole Family Named As Irish dairy Farmers Of The Year
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Noel and Bernadette O'Toole who on Tuesday of last week were announced overall winners of the inaugural Irish Dairy Board (IDB) Dairy Farmer of the Year awards. This is a major achievement not only for the O'Toole family but for the locality, the county and indeed the west of Ireland.

Speaking at the awards the IDB chief executive Kevin Lane said: "The skillset and animal husbandry of Irish dairy farmers is vital in developing efficient dairy farms. The quality, purity and integrity of Irish milk are crucial, when it comes to marketing and developing routes to market for Irish dairy products."

Noel is featured on the front page of this week's Farmer's Journal with the historic cup which is making, its first ever trip across the Shannon in its 100 year history and there is a two page spread on the O'Toole family inside the paper. We heartily congratulate the entire family on this wonderful achievement.

Noel Treacy Welcomes Grants For Local Schools
Galway East Fianna Fáil TD Noel Treacy has welcomed the announcement of grants for local primary and post-primary schools for minor works and to enhance their PE facilities.

"Each school in County Galway will be awarded €5,500 and an additional €18.50 per mainstream pupil and €74 per special needs pupil for minor works." "This funding can be spent on the physical infrastructure of the school, on items of furniture or IT equipment. It allows the schools make these small purchases or do minor work at their discretion without having to refer to the Department of Education."

"In addition to this local schools are also to receive funding for playground and PE equipment." "Each primary school in Galway will receive a basic grant of €1,000 and €10 per pupil. Post-primary schools will get a basic grant of €2,000 and €20 per pupil." "This PE funding will allow local schools to purchase modern new equipment. PE is a vital part of the curriculum and it is important that students are encouraged to participate and are afforded the opportunities to develop their sporting skills."
