30th Galway Abbey-Duniry Scout Group 2011 Calendar
The 30th Galway Abbey-Duniry Scout Group are proud to launch their 2011 Calendar depicting plenty of enjoyable Scouting activities since we first came together in 2007. The calendar also highlights the Scouting Community where our children live e.g. old school photos, G.A.A. hurling teams, & Tidy Towns success. A copy may be purchased @ € 8 in the following outlets: Holihan' s Abbey, Skellys & O'Donnell's, Kylebrack Maloney's & Harney's, Tynagh. This is not a fundraising project but simply a creation of a lovely piece of memorabilia for all our children in years to come. May we take this opportunity to thank everyone in the locality who submitted old photographs or helped in any way in compiling this project. May we also thank everyone who sponsored us so generously in our Carol Singing fundraising event in McInerney's Supermarket on Saturday last.

Christmas Day Sponsored Swim
This year's swim is in aid of Western Alzheimer's. Money raised will be donated to the Galway Branch where they provide quality services to people suffering from Alzheimer's disease and their families. The services they provide are an in-home support service; day care facilities, respite, long stay facilities and also they hope to build a new Alzheimer's Centre adjacent to Merlin Park Hospital. They hope to expand and maintain all of these services which will ensure that people suffering from Alzheimer's disease are cared for in a safe and comfortable environment and so assist families to look after their loved ones at home for as long as possible.

Sign Out Youth Café Receives Funding for Artistic Project
In a week of cutbacks and budgets, Portumna's Sign Out Youth Café must certainly be doing something right as this energetic group of young people has been allocated €3,500 towards an artistic project within the Café. Sign Out is one of 5 cafes in the Galway area to receive funding from dormant accounts. 'Sign Out is continually delivering a variety of workshops for the young people of the area and provides a safe space for them to gather. It is great news for the Cafe to receive this funding' said Helenea Kelly, Chairperson, Sign Out Youth Co. Co-ordinator of the project, Susan Royston is planning a series of graffiti workshop in 2011 with the allocated funds.

Ireland Reaching Out Project to Visit Households
Over the next 2/3 weeks you will be visited by two people from your neighbourhood. The purpose of this is to complete a survey in order for Irish emigrants to come to Ireland to trace their roots. At a townland, village and parish level we need your help in identifying people who left your area. E.g. John Bloggs went to Boston in 1930. You might only have a name but this will be a help. Any additional information you may have will be noted. We hope to trace them and their descendents worldwide and proactively engage with them.

The aim of this project is to identify and reunite people with Irish roots and they will be invited to Portumna in June 2011 for a "Week of Welcomes". You will not be expected to accommodate anyone visiting that week. But you will be more than welcome to participate in any of the activities during that week (details available at a later date).

The success of the project is dependent on the active involvement of South-East Galway parishes. This first step is to record details of emigrants which is why we need your help. Information will then be input into an online website and database. The site will have a specific section for each parish and contain details about the parish, points of interest, its inhabitants, past and present including who they were, where they went and where they and their descendents are now. This information, adhering to data protection requirements and issues of privacy, will be accessible worldwide (similar to Facebook) and leverage the power of the Internet.

Show Jumping: Congratulations to 2nd year student, Aoife McDonagh, who represented Ireland in the Show Jumping Event that was held in the De Warre Equestrian Centre, Belgium, during the last weekend in November. The competition she took part in was the 120 Class Individual Show Jumping and was up against competitors from all over Europe. Well done to Aoife who came Third overall. We would like to wish her the best of luck in future events.

Our School's Got Talent: Friends of Special Olympics Connaught are promoting a fundraiser during the academic year 2010-2011. It will showcase the talent of all secondary school students in the Connaught region (Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon & Galway) and will take the form of an inter school's talent competition called "Our School's Got Talent".

The competition, which will have a total prize fund of €20,000, is open to all secondary school students in the Connaught region. Each county will have its own qualifying heats, Semi final, and County final. Qualifiers from each county will go forward to a Provincial Final at The Royal Theatre, Castlebar, on 16th March 2011. Last year's successful competition, which was only open to secondary schools in Co. Sligo, raised €6,500 in much needed funds for Special Olympics Connaught.

How to Enter? The application form and further details can be found on www.specialolympics.ie/getinvolved/connaught/ourschoolsgottalent. If interested please note that the closing date for entry in Galway competition is Thurs. 16th December.

Monster Christmas Progressive 45
Following last year's success with 15 tables in attendance, Shragh Hall will again host a "Monster Christmas Progressive 45" in their warm newly refurbished facility. It will take place in Shragh Hall at 8pm sharp on next Monday the 20th December. €10 entry. Significant Cash Prizes, Tea & Treats for all.

Lorrha Drama Group
The Lorrha Drama group recently staged Michael J Ginnelly's play "A Wake in the West". It played to packed houses each night. The group ran it 2 extra nights for charity- the recipents were Crumlin Childrens Hospital for sick Children. The group are very entheustatic and progressive, no obstacle gets in their way. The lorrha hall is ideal for hosting plays as it is small and compact. Well done to the whole Community as it is a parish effort. Also we wish Tommy Heenan, Chairman of the Hall all the best and that he will make a full recovery from his recent setback.

'A Galway Afternoon' - Music CD
A Galway Afternoon is an album featuring the music of Joe Madden and his daughter Joanie of 'Cherish the Ladies' fame. The CD features a magical combination of tunes from the legendary box player, the late Joe Madden, accompanied by his gifted Daughter, Joanie, on the flute. 'A Galway Afternoon' is a treasured recording of Joe's unique style recorded in June 2008 while he was home on holidays from New York, just five months before his untimely death. The CD is on sale in Portumna and hopefully Joanie will be home early in 2011 to launch it.

Galway Rural Development
The local GRD Galway Rural Development under the supervision of Sean Larkin (Abbey) have done tremendous work in and around Portumna over the last 12 months, including claening the Yew walk and spreading grit on the paths and roads over the last 2 weeks. They are also doing a teriffic job in the Workhouse where the work includes clearing debris from the buildings and tidying up around the yards. Hopefully they will continue to work in Portumna and surrounding areas.
