Ireland Reaching Out – Portumna Reaching Out
At 8pm, on Monday, January 10th 2011 a meeting will take place in the Shannon Oaks hotel and anyone who would like to volunteer to help with this worthwhile project is strongly encouraged to attend.

Volunteers are needed to become part of a working group that will call around to parishioners to get their help in identifying people who have emigrated from the parish of Portumna, Boula & Gortnamumera. The purpose of this is to complete a survey in order for Irish emigrants to come to Ireland to trace their roots.

The first step is to record details of emigrants, - names, date of birth, when they emigrated, names of next of kin, last known addresses etc. This information will be then input into an online website and database. This site will have a specific section for each parish and contain details about the parish, points of interest, its inhabitants, past and present including who they were, where they went and where their descendants are now.

The aim of the project is to identify and reunite people with Irish roots and they will be invited to Portumna in June 2011 for a week of welcomes. Parishioners will not be expected to accommodate anyone visiting that week, but they will be more than welcome to participate in any of the activities during that week.

Ultimately this project, holds great opportunity for tourism, local employment and the economic well being of Portumna, but its success depends greatly upon the active involvement of the people of the parish. Therefore, if you feel you can be of assistance in any way to this project, (as a researcher identifying people who have left the parish, or perhaps you have information regarding your own family/ancestors, which would be of benefit to the project) please come along to the meeting on Monday 10th January 2010. For more info contact Dolores O Shea on 085 1925466.

Christmas Day Swim
The 2010 Christmas Day Swim had to be postponed until 2nd January 12noon. The Shannon was still very cold at 0.C. and eleven swimmers took the brave decision and jumped into the water. The distance to swim between the 2 jettys is 50 metres. Thankfully they all made it to the other side under the watchful eye of Ann Touhy who is there every year making sure all the swimmers make it across safely.

Like Ann the local Rescue boat is on standby, this year it was manned by Ronnie Curley and Aiden Duffy, these guys do tremendous work during the year with the local firebrigade and the rescue boat.

The money raised this year goes to Western Alzhimers a very deserving cause. This swim has become part of the Christmas festivities here looking forward to 2011 it is only eleven months away?

St. Patricks Day Parade
March 17th is celebrated all around the world as being the feast day of the Patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick. St. Patrick's Day parades in Ireland are a wonderful event for the family to go out and savour the colourful processions, celebrate our Irishness and best of all have plenty of good fun and enjoy the free entertainment!

Portumna has been without a St. Patricks Day parade for the last 3 years, it is time we resurected the National Feast Day once again, anyone with ideas or interest please contact 087 6411711.

The parade showcases Portumna to the rest of the Country, we need to put Portumna on the Tourism map, a parade would be a good start. To make the parade happen a bit of Community spirit is needed, otherwise it will not work.

St. Stephen's Day Walk
Many thanks again to all who supported our walk on St Stevens Day. The numbers were well down this year which was expected due to weather conditions and water shortages. Money raised will help to cover expenses associated with Pony Riding for service users attending St Dympna's Adult Day Service Shannon Road Portumna. Happy New Year to all our supporters

Portumna GAA

Portumna Community School
Senior Hurlers Reach Ryan Cup Final: In early December, Athenry Vocational School traveled to Marian Park to take on Portumna Community School Senior Hurlers in the Ryan Cup Semi-Final. Both sides put up a good fight but it was Portumna who walked away as the winners with a final score of Portumna C.S. 4-13 - Athenry V.S. 3-10. This win has qualified the lads for the Ryan Cup Final, which will be held in the New Year. Well-done and good luck!

Portumna Players Present 'The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley'
The play had been originally scheduled for early December however due to the frost it was cancelled and now will be staged in the Town Hall Portumna on Friday 14th and Sunday 16th, also the following weekend Friday 21st and Sunday 23rd of January 2011.

This is the World Premiere of Jimmy Carey's play, it is said to be hilarious so if you need a laugh after burst pipes, no water, slipping on ice, here is your chance to get rid of the blues, come along and be entertained. The play is directed by Marian Frawley and includes some newcomers to the stage.
