Young Scientist Exhibition
Two students represented Portumna Community School at the Young Scientist Exhibition in Dublin. Mary Cleary and Conor O'Meara, both 5th Years, are presenting their research on the water quality and invasive species in Lough Derg. Under the guidance of Ms. Nagle the students conducted extensive research and fieldwork and produced a comprehensive report. Their work attracted a great deal of favourable comment at the R.D.S. several of the adjudicators found the project very interesting. The Irish Times Newspaper, RTE Television, interviewed Mary and Conor, local politicians who called to the stand were highly complementary of their research. Both students enjoyed the experience enormously and commented on the great atmosphere in the R.D.S. among the students and the huge range of topics researched and the creativity of all concerned. In a time when there is necessarily a lot of gloom about the economy it is uplifting to see so many students generate excellent research and ideas. The Young Scientist Exhibition has produced wonderful ideas over the years and is a showcase for future entrepreneur's just what the Country needs right now.

St. Patrick's Day Parade
The St. Patrick's Day parade was an integral part of the Social Calendar in Portumna since 1984. However for the last 2 years the event failed to materialize. In these recessionary times this years parade (if there is one) can be seen as a unique opportunity to promote Portumna as a tourist destination and also promote businesses in and around the area. In preparation for this year's parade it is hoped to form a committee of volunteers. If you have any interest in helping us resurrect the parade this year come to the first meeting in the Shannon Oaks Hotel on Wednesday 26th January at 8pm. One of the key items this year is to focus on a theme for the Parade. St. Patrick's Day is seen as the start of the Tourist trade in Ireland, so this year let us make a special effort to promote Portumna and all it has to offer.
