Abalta School - Church Gate Collection
Abalta, special school for children with autism will be holding their annual church gate collections throughout the County on Saturday 12th and Sunday the 13th of February. The school provide a vital service to County Galway as it is the only ABA school in the West of Ireland and has students attending from Portumna, Loughrea, Craughwell and other towns including Galway city. In the current climate and with Government cuts, all fundraising is important to provide these children with a chance of fulfilling their potential. Please support generously.


Portumna Community School
Our Schools Got Talent: A number to our students recently took part in the Our Schools Got Talent competition. Congratulations to the following who got through that round and are now going forward to the Semi Final: 2nd years, Maria Kelly and Sarah Fitzpatrick (Duet); TY student, Marian Lynch (Solo); 5th year band 'Hips' – David Clarke, Conor Robinson, Jason Coniry & Tom Gleeson (Band). Hard luck to 6th year, Graham Fogarty who got through to the 2nd round but unfortunately didn't get through to the next – he played the Bodhrán and sang.


Love at Lunchtime
On this Sunday, Feb 13th, at noon come along to "Love at Lunchtime" - a mix of love songs and romantic readings performed by local writers and singers including Anna Browne, Treenie Hogan-Canning, Colin Fahy, Joe Casey, Miriam Donohue, Laura Browne, Darren dBurca, Pascal Kennedy, Brian Whelan, Anne Marie Hough, Helen Collins and more... . This celebration of Love will take place in the Church of Ireland and all welcome. Admission €8 with concessions.


Portumna Arts Group
Reminder to all interested in the Arts in Portumna - you are encouraged to attend the Arts meeting on Thursday, Feb 10th at 8.15pm in Na Calai. Plans for the year's events and the 2011 Shorelines Arts Festival are on the agenda. All welcome.


Blood Transfusion Service
Irish Blood Transfusion Service Board will be in the Shannon Oaks, Portumna on Tue. Feb. 15th from 3pm to 4.45pm and 7pm to 9.30pm. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service nees 3,000 pints of blood and over 10,000 pints monthly.


Organic Gardening Course
The 2011 Organic Gardening Course is beginning in Mid February. This very popular course runs each year for one day per month for 9 months.It takes the participants through the entire growing season. The course covers all aspects of Organic Gardening. Fetac Certification optional. Book early.


Weight Watchers
Weight Watchers meetings will be held every Monday in The Social Centre at Portumna Retirement Village at 7:00pm for Men and Women and 8:15pm Men Only Meeting. New members are always welcome.


Portumna Contract Bridge Club
Portumna Contract Bridge Club Results for the 31st Jan. were 1st; Kaye Duddy, Patsy Hanbury; 2nd Geraldine Canning, Conor Finch; Gross: Lorna Stoddart, Bertie Hanlon. 3rd Vera Burke, Nora Flanagan; 4th Joan Ryan, Michael Torpey. The competition was sponsored by FBD.


Road Resurfacing
Mayor of County Galway Jimmy Mc Clearn has been informed by Galway County Council that a total of €927,000.00 has been allocated by the National Roads Authority for improvement works and resurfacing to the N65 between Kilmeen Cross and Portumna Bridge under the 2011 roads programme. The funds are divided as follows, Brendan Street and Clonfert Avenue Portumna €279,000.00, Killimor €245,000.00, Gortymadden/Kilcooley €110,000.00 and Ballydoogan €295,000.00. Mayor Mc Clearn said that the N65 has suffered from a serious lack of funding in recent years and a number of sections are now in a very poor condition. This unprecedented level of funding will bring a vast improvement and made the road much safer for the many people who use it.

Portumna Community School Musical
Thursday and Friday next Feb. 10th and 11th Portumna Community School will once again stage their annual school musical, an event which has entertained audiences to the highest standards over the years. This year's production is Hot Mikado, a modern take on the Gilbert and Sullivan classic. All the old favourites are given a modern twist from Jazz to rock and plenty in between. Featuring an intoxicating mix of styles and influences, classics such as 'A Wand'ring Minstrel I' and 'Three Little Maids' are transformed into show-stopping blues, swing, hot gospel numbers with pulsating rhythms that will make you want to get up and dance!


Rural Social Scheme
A meeting of the Sliabh Aughty Rural Social Scheme area meeting was held recently in Abbey, it was well attended by people from various groups in the area. Padraic Maher, Co-ordinator Galway Rural Development Company Ltd, made the opening address. He outlined the current position of RSS National/County, budget cuts 2010/2011, work schedule for the coming year.

The introduction of Tús was announced in the Budget with an allocation of €30m in 2011. Up to 5,000 places will be funded once the initiative becomes fully operational later in 2011. Tús will provide short-term, quality opportunities for unemployed people to work in community and voluntary bodies providing a broad range of services of benefit to communities. Participants will be paid the full jobseekers rate plus an additional €20 per week. Under 25 year olds will be paid the maximum Jobseekers Allowance plus €20 per week which makes Tús attractive to this group.

Mr Frank Keane Rural Resources Officer spoke of the Golden Mile Competition. The Golden Mile consists of a one-mile stretch of road, it does not have to be a straight stretch of road. Applications are confined to County Roads outside of the 50km speed limits. Pick a mile that reflects the character of the area and highlights the built, natural and cultural heritage as well as taking cognizance of litter management and road Safety. The meeting concluded with showing of the video of the Workhouse, which was made late last year. Well done to everyone concerned.


Portumna Golf Club
The Captains and Presidents Drive-in this coming Sunday, it was to take place last Sunday however due to the inclement weather the course was closed. Draw will take place at 11.30am shot gun start at 12 noon. Also that evening there will a special presentation to the All-Ireland winning Junior Cup team. Every member welcome.


Rainbows Support Group for Children
Rainbows Programme will commence in Galway Rural Development - Na Calaí, Abbey St., Portumna in mid February depending on numbers. Rainbows is a support group programme for children who have suffered significant loss in their lives, either through death, separation, divorce or any painful transition. It is strictly a peer support group. The children meet in small groups with a trained adult leader for 12 one hourly sessions. If your child has experienced such loss and you would like more information or to enrol him/her in this programme please telephone Frances or Mary at 974 1887 or the Rainbows coordinator Olive on 087-770 7775.
