Put Portumna on the Map
Portumna is a tourist destination Town or at least we hope it is. However, when you type Portumna on Google Maps there are very few businesses or attractions marked on it, so as a result potential visitors to the area may not bother coming as they mistakenly think Portumna and surrounding areas has nothing to offer. We know differently but the rest of the world are viewing us from the Internet. So for a start get your business on Google Maps.

The question has to be asked! Do you want free advertising for your business/club/amenity? Then why not publish it on Google Maps for free. If someone clicks on your area, why shouldn't your business show up? If someone wants to look for an amenity like yours, why shouldn't yours show up instead of competitors? Google Maps allows you to list businesses/clubs/amenities etc for free.

Ireland Reaching Out (Ireland XO)
New Training Initiative My People, My Place, My Heritage: Thanks to funding from the Galway County Council and the Galway Heritage Forum, the Ireland Reaching Out (IrelandXO) project is launching a new training initiative: My People, My Place, My Heritage - knowing my place and my people. This is a local heritage training and knowledge initiative to develop and deliver local heritage, genealogy, history and folklore training to the 46 parishes that form the IRO south-east Galway Diaspora Pilot Project area.

An important element of this initiative is that local experts living in South East Galway will be providing this valuable training. This is a terrific opportunity to up skill oneself in a high growth area and the first of further training initiatives that we intend to launch as the rollout of the project continues.

The three evening courses will take place in the Loughrea Spa Hotel from 7.30-9.30 pm on Tues/Wed evenings, starting on 15th March and run until mid-May. Participation is free of charge (incl. a certificate of attendance) and in return we ask for a contribution of volunteer hours to the project. Please visit the website www.irelandxo.com/docs/training.pdf or ring (091) 842013 for detailed information on dates, course descriptions and registration.

This project has also been part-funded by Galway Rural Development under the European Agriculture Fund for Rural Development: Europe Investing in Rural Areas.

Blood Donation Award
At a special event for local Father and Son, the Irish Blood Transfusion Service invited Thomas Moran, Pallas and his eldest son Barry, to a special award ceremony last week. They each received an award for having achieved 50 blood/platelet donations each. The generosity of voluntary time from donors and the benefit to the services that require blood cannot be over estimated. Well done to the two of you! And as they say-"like father, like son"

10th Galway Portumna Scout Group
10th Galway Portumna Scout Group filled Portumna Town Hall with colour, activities and equipment on Sunday last, 27th February with their very successful Open Day. The day was very well attended by those interested in finding out more about Scouting in Portumna who were very pleasantly surprised by the sight of 80 uniformed members of the Group busy at all types of scouting activities. Each of the four Sections within the Group - Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Ventures - laid on displays showcasing their activities and skills. All children who attended the day partook in the activities with the Section members so that they could experience Scouting at first hand.

The Beaver Section were busy preparing their costumes for the St Patrick's Day Parade as well as manning the highest rope swing seen in Portumna to date. Cubs demonstrated how to pack for and set up camp and how to tie knots. They also provided training on how to use a compass as well as arranging an Orienteering game. Young attendees also got the change to play a range of Scouting games with Cubs. The Scout Section provided training on map reading and finding grid references as well as cooking food on Trangias. Pioneering skills were also on show as well as a Flag ceremony demonstration. The Ventures Section has a range of canoeing and rock climbing equipment on show and were also busy assisting the younger members on the day.

A number of presentations were delivered to parents outlining the objectives of scouting along with the structure of the Portumna Group. A representative from each section briefly outlined their activities, and special mention must go the Youth Members who contributed in such a professional manner. Ruth Murray from Beavers contributed for their Section while Peter Claffey, chairman of the Scout Section Patrol Leaders' Council delivered a personal story of scouting. Conor O'Meara, Chairman of the Ventures Council provided a briefing on their activities. A special thanks to all who made the day happen.
