Portumna Rose: Portumna G.A.A Club held the rose of Portumna last Friday night in the Shannon Oaks Hotel. Ninteen elegant Roses took to the stage. Earlier on they were interviewed and put through their paces by our three judges Kieran O Brien, Ann Connolly and Aine Killelia - they had a difficult task as the quality of the Roses was of a high standard. A big thank you to them for their expertise on the night. The event began with the Roses being presented to the audience with their handsome escorts in toe. The talent that these girls displayed were a credit to themselves, their families, and to the businesses they represented. While the judges went away to make their final decision the club made a donation to three local students who were going to Fiji.

The winning Rose was Martha Gorman who was representing Stronges Pub. Martha now goes on the represent Portumna in the Galway Rose competition which will take place in the Shearwater Hotel on Saturday night so the best of luck to Martha and we have no doubt she will do Portumna proud.

A big thank you to Dick Ridge who was M.C. for the night. He had a lovely word for all the Roses and he kept them at ease and to Muirne Goode for all her help on the night and over the last couple of weeks. As a former Rose, she had a great insight into the competition and was an inspiration to all the Roses. Thanks also to Mary Lynch for her help and to Tony Hogan and Treeny Canning who provided the music on the night, also to Keith Harris the photographer for the occasion. A big thank you to all the nineteen businesses who sponsored the Roses - Stronges, Caislean Bar, Curleys Bar and Lounge, Cul Sports, D.Lynch and Sons, Supermacs, The Ferry Inn, Portumna Camogie Club, The Beehive, Mc Entees Butchers, Parmeston Stores, Property Partners, Acorn to Oak, Retirement Village, Picture This, Modena Restaurant, O Mearas Bar and Restaurant. Further Progress on the Development of the Irish Workhouse Centre
As well as telling the story of the Irish Workhouse, the rejuvenation of Portumna Workhouse is an exciting conservation and redevelopment project. Last week, a group of people experienced in conservation and in re-using old buildings, met at the Portumna Workhouse to discuss the various conservation and re-development issues with the project promoters South East Galway IRD. Those present included Colm Murray, architect with the Heritage Council, Edward Byrne from the Traditional Lime Company, Mairin Doddy, Architectural Conservation Officer with Galway County Council, Dermot Nolan, Conservation Engineer and a team from Solearth Ecological Architects.

This was an interesting and useful day. South East Galway IRD is committed to adhering to best conservation practice and is also committed to ensuring that new interventions are as ecologically sound as is practical. There was also good news on the financial front for the project, with the Heritage Council allocating grant aid to assist with the re-roofing of the infirmary building. Also Galway Rural Development Ltd. is providing financial assistance with the preparation of a services and energy efficiency report. Participants on the Rural Social Scheme continue to work on the project. All going to plan, it is hoped that the Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna will be open for July and August of this year. Anybody requiring further information about the project can contact Ursula or Eric at SE Galway IRD, Abbey St. Portumna tel: 090-9741867.
