Portumna & District Active Retirement Association
May was a busy month for the association and we were indeed very active as we had several events to mark the Bealtine Festival. On the 20th of May we had a memorial tree and flower bed planted in Portumna Castle Kitchen Garden with afternoon tea and music by Brian and Jo, kindly sponsored the National Historic Monuments. The "Dawn Chorus" gathering took place by the banks of the River Shannon on Sunday 29th May, the Active Retirement Choir was joined by the Omna Singers and the Portumna Scouts & Beavers to mark an All-Ireland Bealtine celebration, many thanks to all who turned out on a cold but dry morning to create such beautiful harmony. We had a memorial celebration in memory of our past members on the 24th May.

Eighteen members joined with up with our friends from Abbey-Duniry and traveled by coach to join a National gathering of Retirement Groups in the Glen Eagle Hotel in Killarney, they spent a fabulous few days which included sightseeing tours each day, dinner and musical entertainment each night. On Wednesday 8th June we held our main event for Bealtine with an art exhibition, songs from our choir, Sean Nos dancing, dew harp playing and a Mad Hatters hat display made by our members.

Junior A Team: The junior A team had a good start to the championship when they beat near neighbours Kiltormer last Saturday evening by 4 points on a scoreline 1-13 to 0-12. Owen Treacy was the first Portumna player to get his name on the score sheet with a point from a 65. A goal and point from Ronan Hayes and 4 more pointed frees from Owen who was very accurate with his free taking gave Portumna a 6 point lead at the interval and indeed should have been much more only for a lot of squandered chances.

Kiltormer upped the ante in the second half with two unanswered points before Patrick Dolphin settled Portumna again with two well-taken points. Further scores from Eamann Lynch (0-2) owen Treacy (0-2) from frees and Ciaran Ryan (0-1) set them up for a good win. Their next game in the championship is this week-end against Liam Mellows.
