Portumna GAA
Feile na nGael: This week-end our under 14 team will be in the spotlight when Feile na nGael comes to Galway for the first time since 1993. The club play host to Toreen the Mayo county champions and we would like to welcome the Toreen players and mentors to Portumna. Our u14 team play Toreen on Friday at 3pm in the pitch and your support for both teams would be appreciated. Both teams and mentors will be fed in the Clubhouse before they travel to Loughrea for the Opening parade and ceremonies of the Feile. On Saturday both teams travel to Mullagh where Portumna take on the host team at 10 am while Toreen play the Antrim County champions at 11am. Portumna play Kickham Creggan at 12-15 while Toreen play the home team at 1-15. The semi finals take place in Killimor 6pm. A barbaque is organised for both teams in the G.A.A.grounds on Sat evening with lots of ceol craic agus caint arranged for the evening. The club would like to wish the Portumna panel and mentors the best of luck over the week-end but the main thing lads is to enjoy the few days as they do not come around too often and ye should consider it a great honour to be representing your club in such a prestigious competition.

Lotto: There was no winner of last Sat nights lotto jackpot worth €4000. The numbers drawn were 6 16 17 18. One person matched three numbers Seamus Canning. Next week-ends lotto is worth €4100.

Long Puc: Well done to Ivan Canning on winning the long puc in Athenry during the week. Ivan now goes on to represent Galway in Ballyhaunis on 4th july so the club would like to wish him the best of luck.

Cope with Friends - Carers Support Group
Carer's week recently celebrated the contribution of Irelands family carers with over 100 events throughout the country. Family Carers provide high levels of care at home providing an average of 110 hours care per week.

National Carer's Week, now in it s fifth year, aims to recognize the work of carers. To mark this occasion Portumna Carers Support Group "Cope with Friends" recently held two events to highlight the work that they do. The first was a table quiz in The Boathouse the proceeds of which were shared between the group and The Social Services Day Care Centre in Castle Avenue. On the 14th June a coffee morning was also held in "Alor Star" on St. Brendans Road.

"Cope with Friends" provides group support for family and friends caring for people suffering from mental health difficulties. Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month in "Alor Star" St. Brendan's Road from 7.30 to 9.30. where support and invited speakers present topics relevant to the members. The Carers Department in Galway play a vital role in providing resources to give respite breaks to the members. The group will recommence again on the fourth Tuesday in September.

Portumna Castle Kitchen Garden
The hidden garden which hides behind the wall is a true gem, it is on the left as you enter the main castle rose garden and whose entry is marked by the cherry tree and an arched doorway in the wall, is a secret heaven. Have you been there? Would you like to help there? We are at the moment revamping many of our fruit and vegetable beds and we have advertised on the Galway volunteer web site. Anybody interested can make contact with our staff each weekday morning from 9 o'clock to 1 o'clock. We hope to also make vegetable plots available to willing workers. All the beds and plants have been replanted, you can sit down and relax on some of the timber seats that are placed in ideal spots around this beautifully walled Garden, it is worth a visit.

Bachelor of Portumna
Cliff Richard had a hit back in the 60s with a song called Bachelor Boy, in it he claims "happy to be a Bachelor Boy until my dying day" I am not sure if this lot will be happy to stay a single guy but you can however view the merchandise next Saturday night, with only a few days remaining the anticipation is building to bursting point for a very tightly contested Bachelor of Portumna 2011 pa-gent (sic). Local bookmaker, Donie O'Meara, is quoting very close odds, but there are definitely a few dark horses in the running. With such fine specimens on show and with some amazing hidden talent, it would take a brave woman to pick a winner at this stage. The entertainment kicks off at 8.30pm on Saturday 25th June in the Shannon Oaks Hotel and whatever about picking the winner the odds on a brilliant night of fun and craic are greatly in your favour. Portumna Rugby Club hosts this event.
